I had heard from someone “in-the-know” that Nixon had the military at Defcon 2 during this time in expectation of an attack by Russia on Israel. Did anyone else ever hear that?

My father worked for DOD at the time and had a role in nuclear preparedness and post-nuclear operations. During this war, he was put on alert, and our family was ready to pack our bags and leave on short notice.

A scary time.

For three days we were doing 24 hour alerts because of increased tensions but we never postured our systems any differently or changed the optempo.

Defcon 2 would have dispersed everything and we would have TDY'd with it.

The most noteworthy thing I remembered about the whole affair was we raided our WRSKs and actually degraded our capability through spares depletion.
