“Its just shameful that a theater commander has to make a public plea for help because the political CoC is sitting on its collective thumb.”
I agree. Whatever one thinks of Gates or Jones for accepting jobs in Obama’s cabinet (it’s OK with me because Obama could have done a lot worse) they are only doing their jobs when they insist that military commanders shouldn’t appeal directly to the media.
On the other hand, General McChrystal is justifed in doing so and is willing to take the consequences. He seems to be saying, “I’m not going to stay here running an unwinnable war. Either give me what I need, fire me, or I’ll resign.”
EMANUEL & AXELROD!
Who Is Making Foreign Policy?

Charles Krauthammer observes:
“You have the best generals in the world McChrystal on counterterrorism and Petraeus on counterinsurgency the best in the world who know exactly how this is done and who conclude you cannot do a counterterrorism strategy, only counterinsurgency. And all of a sudden he is relying on Biden, Rahm Emanuel, and himself to go against the advice of these experts? Hard to believe.”
It is. (And dont forget David Axelrod.) More than one conservative colleague has remarked upon the inordinate role that advisers who lack the necessary credentials and expertise have in shaping foreign policy in this administration. We are told that the notion of putting daylight between the U.S. and Israel and undermining Bibi Netanyahu among Israeli voters was the brainchild of Emanuel and Axelrod.

Krauthammer’s Take

General Shinseki = perfumed socialist prince. What a poor excuse he was for a general.
Looks like Hussein found a willing stooge in Gates.Forty pieces of silver...and the troops are dying as he counts them.
General McChrystal at his own peril is looking out for the troops and has a strategy to win the war on the ground, the political part should not be and is not under his perview. If he went through the Media, because it seems to me he thinks the CoC is broken. With NATO this is very likely situation. The enemy on the ground is not going to wait while the CinC makes his political decision and does care about his time lines. If SecDef Robert Gates and POTUS Obama were in any branch of service in the USA they do not have what it takes to get to the position that General McChrystal now holds.
Question of the Day: Has Obama ever served the United States in any form besides a very short stint as Senator?
