PA 2010: Poll shows Toomey has narrow lead over Specter [Specter's defection backfires]
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette ^ | 2009-10-02 | James O'Toole

Posted on 10/06/2009 4:29:22 PM PDT by rabscuttle385

A new Quinnipiac University poll found Republican challenger Pat Toomey with a narrow lead over Sen. Arlen Specter.

Statistically, the survey's trial race -- 43 percent for Mr. Toomey and 42 percent for the incumbent -- was essentially identical to the school's last survey in July, when Mr. Specter was ahead by the similarly tiny margin of 45 percent to 44 percent. Both results were well within the survey's 3 percentage point margin of error. But the reversal of their positions threw a symbolic spotlight on the veteran's vulnerability in the closely watched race.

When he made his surprising departure from the Republican Party earlier this year, Mr. Specter said he didn't want his political fate to be decided by a jury of the GOP electorate. The new findings suggest that a general election jury might also render a thumbs-down verdict on his re-election.

Toomey will win handily. PA voters will find it illogical to support either an 80-year old with no convictions who is battling cancer, or another pathetic Dem socialist. If the GOP establishment stays out of Toomey’s way he’s a shoo-in.

Quinnipiac typically oversamples Dems anyway.

Toomey has a target-rich environment here.

My campaign script would be: “If you don’t have a job today, thank Arlen Specter. If your community is losing money, thank Arlen Specter. If you can’t get a loan, thank Arlen Specter. Arlen Specter was the only person in the majority party in the U.S. Senate during the disasterous Bush Administration and the even more disasterous Obama Administration. Arlen Specter is exactly what’s wrong with Washington politics and you see where leadership like Arlen Specter’s has led America - right down a rat hole.”

Well. PA voters were irrational enough to elect a pathetic skinnyass empty suit Dem socialist in 2008, so I will wait and see.

I think the polls may be seriously underestimated for our side. Mu husband and I refuse to respond to polls because they are generally so skewed in content to favor the desired outcome. And I suspect a lot of conservatives do the same. There’s a good chance that most polls these days are heavily weighted by Dems.

I just can’t believe that Specter could garner that much support anymore.

Will Specter even make it out of the Dem primary?
I thought Sestak was gaining on him pollwise.

Face it, Specter put himself first and now all the voters on both sides know it... he’s going down in flames because at the end of the day, he deserves to be retired at long last.

The people of PA havew been sold down the river by the Republican leadership for years. When I got a call three days ago about how the Republican party needs my help to deafeat Specter I exploded. I gave the caller such a raft of S#$% about how they got President Bush to throw his support behind Specter and defeat Toomey in the Primary that they ARE THE CAUSE OF MANY OF THESES PROBLEMS AND THEY DID IT FOR POLITICS NOT POLICY.

The caller said they had no way of knowing that Specter was like that , and besides he is no longer a Republican.
That almost made my head explode.

I said if you did not know what Alen Specter stood for you were the only people in the country who didn’t and you want me to give you money to support your judgement?

She hung up.

They do that. Like NJ, PA is always a teaser. It looks close all the way but in the end the 'Rat wins.

Unlike many on FR, I think the polls are right. This is and will be a close race. And you know what a close race means. It means the 'Rats will, somehow, find a way to "win", especially after the election is over. One thing we learn from (recent) history is the the 'Rat almost always "wins" the close contests.

Simple, he supported Sotomayor based on an illogical premise for the purposes of pandering to the mushy moderate middle. Once the pandering and BS starts it never stops. Toomey, like all scumbag politicians will say and do whatever it takes to get elected.

Conventional wisdom is that the majority of the undecideds break for the challenger vs. the incumbent. So Toomey’s position now is stronger than the one-point edge the poll gives him. Specter should be concerned, very concerned. 42% for well-known incumbent usually indicates pending defeat. But we still have more than a year to go.
