ITHACA, N.Y. -- President Obama has announced his intention to nominate a native Ithacan and Cornell graduate to a key post in his administration. Mary J. Miller is up for the position of Assistant Secretary of the Treasury for Financial Markets.
Miller grew up in Ithaca and received her bachelor's degree in government from Cornell. She is now the vice president of T. Rowe Price, a Baltimore-based investment firm.
The post Miller is up for advises the treasury secretary on financial markets, government debt and credit and lending.
Miller must first be confirmed by the Senate.
After all, Ithaca is the City of Evil.

What is a degree in government, and how does that qualify someone to work in a financial firm? Sounds like a useful degree, like ancient latin or surfing.
That may be too generous, but to say learning Latin helped my English vocabulary is an understatement. It's the root of almost innumerable scientific terms.
Nothing against Latin as a language, but what can you do with a degree in Latin? And more to the point, what is a degree in government? Is it a dumb version of political science?
I know I’m pointing out the obvious, but Ithaca looms large in your postings.

He could certainly use some advice on those matters but a person from Ithaca ... ??
I’m not sure, but I imagine that it’s about as practical as most other undergraduate degrees that aren’t in the hard sciences or engineering.
After my son was at the University of Texas for five years I told him he was going to have to quit playing around and scratch around and see what he had enough credits in to get a degree. That turned out to be a degree in government. It was simply his get out of jail card and has nothing to do with anything he has done since.
Teach in some high schools, like I was taught Latin, and at the college or university level for all three subjects.
Beyond that, I don't see that much use for the majors required for B.A. degrees. It's more of an indictment of public high schools and colleges or universities that are useless other than make work programs.
Science, technology, engineering and mathematics will be where the competition will be found.
Note the subtle distortion. She is a vice president of T. Rowe Price.
In that business, "vice presidents" are a dime a dozen.

As an Ithaca-area resident of 33 years, one the great pleaseures in life is listenting to Rush Limbaugh on WHCU - 870 AM on the dial. (The CU stands for Cornell University as it was originally a station operated by Cornell).
Some hours of the Rush Radio Show on this sation open with the intro:

How true that is and how sweet to know just how much Rush powerful voice irritates local looney liberals.

This woman probably makes a million a year and we are trashing her choice of major??
As a Hobart grad with a BA in Economics who now manages money for clients I’d like to know from my esteemed colleagues on this thread why they think an engineering degree is so much more practical in today’s information-based age.
Ah, you hold a BA in Economics she holds a BA in Government who started out with a better basis the work they performed. She’s probably pulling down more than $1M and she might have learned something over the past 25 years.
As for engineering and hard science degrees not much good after three years unless you keep up. They do demonstrate and ability to apply a “scientific method” to problem solving and don’t accept emotions or feelings as an answer.
