The Obama administration is curbing the powers of an Arizona sheriff who has led one of the most contentious fights against illegal immigrants.
Under an agreement involving local enforcement of federal immigration law, Sheriff Joe Arpaio's deputies will no longer have the authority to arrest suspected illegal immigrants in the streets in the course of their duty.

This is part of STEP ONE to legalize aliens !
He’s a good man. Must suck to have your own government passing laws for you to enforce then telling you you can’t enforce them.
Keep the Fed out of our states business -
The sheriff knew this was coming and as always he will have an answer that will continue to make liberals heads spin.
So we now have laws that are not to be enforced.
Our laws are now optional depending on those who are in power.
Welcome to the Banana Republic of Baracamerica...
Great news! Keep it up Obama! Keep slapping American heroes in the face. 2010 is going to be SOOOO fun. Yesterday a 3-term liberal democrat mayor who was considered safe, got a nasty surprise upset from a conservative.
I think Obama isn't fit to lick the dirt off this man's boots. If Arizona supports this man, and this man is not violating Federal Law, Obama can go back to mis-managing the war, the budget, foreign relations, mangling the constitution, embezelling and fraud. Obama can't manage the evil he brought into the office; I don't see him adding anything valuable to the state of Arizona (or to mankind, for that matter).
The mayor was in Albuquerque.
"They took away my authority on the streets. That doesn't matter because I will still pursue illegals on the streets of Maricopa utilizing the authority I have as the elected official," Mr. Arpaio said Tuesday in an interview.
Facts are necessary.
Does anyone know how many "suspected illegal aliens" this sheriff has arrested have in fact been illegal aliens?
If the percentage is over 90, I'd say there are grounds for a battle.
Anything less could be painted by the libs as racial bias.
Who?
sounds to me like a special assessment on the paychecks of Federal Employees within the State to pay for any and all costs related to Illegal Aliens, needs to be implemented NOW. What would happen if we implemented a 50% assessment on the paychecks of All Federal Employees earning over $50,000 per year.
Illegal Immigration is a Federal Problem right, so I say we let them Pay.
Immediately cancel and revoke ALL agreements, contracts, and permissions the State of AZ has with the Feds, Assess their wages, attach their property, make them all Pay til there are no Illegal Aliens or better yet No Federal Employees within the State.
the last bit of the article....who got the last laugh?
“They took away my authority on the streets. That doesn’t matter because I will still pursue illegals on the streets of Maricopa utilizing the authority I have as the elected official,” Mr. Arpaio said Tuesday in an interview.
Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano ordered a comprehensive review of the 287g program shortly after taking office.
A person close to the Obama administration said some DHS officials had been hoping Mr. Arpaio would withdraw from the program altogether when confronted with a watered-down version.
Mr. Arpaio, a headline-grabbing elected official in his fifth term, said: “They thought I wasn’t going to sign it. I signed it.”
WHEN WAS THE 1ST ONE?...................
The US government cannot usurp his duty as an elected official in his county. He knows that and stated that he will continue to use that authority.
They can water down whatever program they like, but it cannot interfere with his duties in his county.
Ping.
It’s utterly amazing! This administration gives us at least, one reason a day to be even more ticked off than the day before!
Yes, they are pushing us towards a second civil war. I am beginning to believe that this is the goal for total control.
Was the mayor defeated? What state?
Say it aint so, Joe.
Sheriff Joe for President 2012.
They definitely want an excuse to use the power of the state to punish, incarcerate, or exterminate their ideological opponents. This is an historical hallmark of collectivists.
Disgusting development, but sadly not surprising.
Sheriff Joe was TOO American - he had to be smacked down. He should be feted as a hero - just for doing his job and upholding the law without apology.
So what gives the federal government the right to tell the state government how to enforce state laws? We’re sliding down a very slippery slope. The federal government is ignoring the US Constitution more and more every day.
Go gettum Joe, Ya wanna Pi$$ them off arrest twice as many next year!
Walter Williams said [paraphrased]
“We won the first war for independence. The second one we lost. Seems it’s time for a tie-breaker.”
absolutely..he’s about 10 steps ahead of the fed right now and has already figured out how to get around it..
And they are underestimating the will of the people and I hope they continue to do so.
The War from 1860-1865 will ALWAYS be know by me as “The War of Northern Aggression”.
I think Sheriff Joe as a local authority would be more effective in restoring the republic.
Time for the states to say that THEY are the superior authority, not the feds. The states CREATED the fedgov.
Who in their right mind would create a contract (Constitution) creating another entity, and give that created entity sole power to interpret that contract?
How about the 2nd war for Independence?
The 1st one was a war to assert and establish self rule, as was the 2nd.
The Revolutionary war wasn’t the “War of English Aggression”. The English were trying, as the North stated their goal was, to “preserve the Union”, or the English Empire in that case.
Well, we are an “aggressive people”. =)
Politics by other means.

Yep, same thing happened here in Wake County. The county school board has been controlled by liberals for decades but last night the media and pundits were SHOCKED when moderate/conservative candidates went 4 for 4 in defeating the liberal candidates. For the first time we will have a moderate/conservative school board!
It begins at the local level folks - this is big news in Raleigh today.
The Colonials thought of themselves as conservative and were trying to keep the politics and laws and economy that they built up. The King was trying to impose his new will.
The King was the agressive actor, as Kings tend to be.
I prefer, “The War for Southern Independence”..........Perhaps, now, the rest of the country will see why.............
Whether that “King” is a single monarch or a collective set of “elites”, the mindset is the same - “how dare you want to rule yourselves. I/we know better. You will obey me/us.”
Let it start in DC this time and not South Carolina !
The War for Southern Independence”
I wholeheartedly agree with this correct reference to that war.
Won one (1776), lost one, time for a tiebreaker?
I think the way to handle it THIS time is to NOT attack or try to overthrow the established gov’t in DC.
The proper approach is to IGNORE THEM. Do not enforce or allow to be enforced any unconstitutional laws, regs, edicts, taxes, etc.
Make them come into the state to try to impose their will. Then we’ll defend the state from aggression.
Sudden Death?.................
Amen!!!
what a shocker the far lefties a WSJ use a misleading headline to ram thru their agenda.
But the artlcles states the guy will contunue to arrest illegals !
I used to be a WSJ subscriber, until last fall, when their headlines were simply repetitions of 0bama/DNC talking points. Their editorial page was right leaning, but I couldn’t stomach their front page headlines.
I switched to IBD. Great paper, through and through.
Congratulations!
Send 0bama home - then send the illegals home.
That’s my story and I’m sticking to it...don’t tempt me with reversing naturalization of anchor babies.
Where’s that?
