They didn't surrender?They didn't surrender effectively. Those pirates misunderstood all of the white flags and shouts of 'I surrender' as aggression, and became frightened. They counter-surrendered to the French, causing great confusion. The deadlock was broken when a cabin mate lowered his hands to pick up his dropped cigarette, and the somalis fell to the ground in fear.
