The high cost of being soft on crime
National Post ^ | October 07 2009 | Araminta Wordsworth

Full Comment's Araminta Wordsworth brings you a regular dose of international punditry at its finest. Today: In the nanny state that is contemporary Britain, no one should be punished for committing a minor crime, such as mugging an old lady for her pension or shoplifting or driving while drunk.

Sounds risible, doesn’t it? But this call comes from the people in charge of keeping criminals behind bars, the Prison Governors Association. Short sentences don’t work, says its head. Instead offenders should be given a slap on the wrist, and obliged to do community service instead of prison time.

If your intent on destroying a once great culture, even political officials have to have the same disdain for the “mores” of the society slated for destruction as the criminals on the street.

Let’s put aside criminals for the moment and ask an important question.

Why is burglary so common in Britain???

Why???

Is it partly on the leftist agitators who have been spouting anti-private property nonsense for decades?

Is it because the English have quit as a society and don’t really value themselves any longer?

Do people in England view burglary as just another form of occupation? A way for people to put food on the table?

????

Well, actually, imprisonment has become more, and more, and more expensive over the years, what with fancy jails, unionized prison guards, and all the rest of it. Nothing like this was ever done in the past.

But it’s necessary to punish criminals, or the rule of law will break down and people will have to take the law into their own hands.

Maybe the solution is to return to stocks and the lash. It’s not a pleasant idea. But how much can we afford to spend on coddling criminals? And how can we afford to simply let them loose.

In any case, stocks and the lash would certainly be much cheaper than jailing someone for months or years, and unpleasant enough so they might not do it again.

I kind of like the idea of putting petty criminals into the stocks over the weekend, and pelting them with rotten fruit and eggs.

???? It could be that they have a corrupt election system.

How else to explain Socialists wining election after election.
