GAO report: Saudis are top fianciers of Taliban
WASHINGTON The United States has determined that Saudi Arabia continues to be the leading source of funding to Al Qaida and is also the top financial backer of Taliban. ShareThis
A report the Government Accountability Office said the Saudi government did not appear to be involved in the funding, but that Saudi funds to both Al Qaida and Taliban has helped finance the war against NATO in Afghanistan. GAO said Saudis were the chief source of funding to Taliban. The report said couriers were transporting cash from Saudi Arabia and other Gulf Cooperation Council states to Afghanistan and Pakistan for Taliban. They are a top source of funding for Al Qaida and associated terror groups, such as the Taliban," GAO said on Sept. 29.
"It is vital that the U.S. demand more from the Saudi government in cutting off the money flow to the Islamist extremist network," Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, the ranking Republican on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, said. GAO said Riyad has failed to stop the flow of funds from individuals and charities to Al Qaida and Taliban. The report said the Saudi funding continued amid the kingdom's crackdown on Al Qaida and counter-insurgency support to neighboring Yemen.
The report also warned of Saudi Arabia's policy to rehabilitate Al Qaida insurgents. GAO reported a 20 percent recidivism rate of the 4,300 Al Qaida operatives who went through the re-education program.
"Saudi officials acknowledge such cases illustrate the difficulties associated with assessing which participants should be released," GAO said.
The congressional watchdog recommended that the White House draft performance targets for Saudi Arabia in the war against Al Qaida. Over the last five years, several prominent of Congress have sought to link U.S. arms sales to Riyad to its commitment to block funding to Al Qaida.
just proves that 911 was an inside job after all. /s
Here’s a thought: Lets stop buying oil from Saudi Arabia?
The Taliban are peaceful people - why do you attack them so.
Anyone else shocked by this? They were the inventors of this rabidly violent version of Islam in the first place.
If n you ain’t with us , then you’re sure as h3ll agin’ us!
Time for some world order.
Ahh...who knew...not! Saudis also fund Muslim Brotherhood to export Islam to the west by building mosques. Hussein has close ties to MB and bows to the Saudi king.
And how many of them hijackers were Saudis?
What was the bow about? Obama is a muslim? He gave the US away?
The house of saud funding terrorists?
Say it ain’t so!
He was thanking them for the $750 million he got to steal the election.
I think Bush raised $300 million in 2000 or close too it. No way is h*ll Obama raised $750 million in the USA. Imposssible.
Then they own Him and with this report, it is not good for our troops.
your gasoline money go straight to the Taliban
continue driving your gas guzzler
let me add.
thanks a lot for being the Saudis best friend,
and doing everything you could to cause
oil prices to go up.
I get my gas at RaceTrack
How did all our oil get under their sand?
So instead of building nuclear and reducing the demand for oil, we’re instead embarking on a bet the farm strategy on alternative energies that are not likely to be viable.
And the leader of this mad energy plan bowed to the Saudi King.
That was my first thought too..he bowed to the Saudi King.
Here’s a better thought. Take it over or shut down their oil fields for 20 years or so. By then the head camel jocks would have long been gone to the 72 virgins and the new ones will be grateful for anything other than goat meat and camel milk.
How did our manufacturing end up in a communist country? And now labled as the future of capitalism..think about that one..
agreed & my thoughts exactly-the bamster BOWS to the King of Saudi Arabia?? oh yes,he did
