A Step in Faith (Evangelical Explains Journey From Hate-Filled Homophobe To Gay-Rights Activist)
Newsweek ^ | Oct 8, 2009 | Brent Childers

Posted on 10/08/2009 2:39:26 PM PDT by presidio9

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) Americans are a diverse, extraordinary, resilient, and passionate group of forgiving men and women. I wouldn't be standing beside them demanding full and equal treatment under the law and speaking out against the harm caused by religion-based bigotry at the National Equality March in Washington, D.C., on Oct. 11 if I thought they were not created in God's image the same as myself, same as my family, as we all are—we are all God's children.

And I know better than anyone, since six years ago I was one of those bigots. At that time it would have seemed abominable to even consider attending a "gay-rights" event. To me, these would have been the people tearing apart the very seams of our culture and our country.

Today, it is a natural expression of who I am. Some might call that a miracle.

So what it is that would bring someone from a place where he once declared himself a "Jesse Helms Republican," a man who condemned homosexuality as a threat to children and society, told his own son that being gay is a ticket to hell, to travel from Hickory, N.C., to the West Lawn of the Capitol building on Oct. 11, 2009? How can one travel from the seemingly impossible road of bigotry to one of acceptance and love for our LGBT brothers and sisters? The answer is one that I hope religious leaders such as Pat Robertson and James Dobson (and most importantly,

The relevant part of this is that his son is gay. Having produced an abomination he has to come up with an excuse for it. Just a homo apologist.

There will be those that will say ‘Lord, Lord, didn’t I embrace gays with total acceptance of their life style, after all they were MADE IN YOUR IMAGE,’ and what will be the Lord’s reply? Christ died for their sin to deliver them from it not give them (and me) a free pass for sin.

Our first reaction to liberal crap like this needs to be an investigation of the term “gay rights.”

Gay people in this country have EXACTLY the same constitutional rights as straight people. As far as I have been able to determine, the “right” that gay people are now seeking is licencse to same sex marriage.

Moving on to the Christian view of gay people, Jesus taught us to love them. They are indeed made in His own image. That being said, buttsex is still a sin, between man and God. No amount of protesting will change that. But Christianity has no problem whatsoever with mentally ill individuals who believe they are sexually attracted to members of their own gender.

After changing his views on homosexuality, he left the Southern Baptist Church and now attends both a local Pentacostal and a nondenominational church in Hickory, N.C.

Those must be some wild and crazy Pentecostals...

It’s true that many people who experience same-sex attraction are wonderful people.

But it remains that acting on such temptation is sinful.

Not sure why he included the dig on James Dobson. Dobson’s never said anything hateful against those who experience SSA.

So anyone who lives by the Word of God, and does not condone homosexuality, is a “bigot”, “hater”, whatever word of the day, etc.?

Every single preacher I have ever heard speak on the subject tells us to hate the sin but love the sinner, and to gently try to convince them of what God says about their lifestyle. These preachers are adamant that we are not to be violent, but KINDLY tell them that it is against God and His ways.

These libs are truly making up the fact that evangelicals are haters and bigots when it comes to this subject. I guess that plays into them wanting to demonize anyone with whom they disagree.

If you engage in immoral/sinful acts as the result of mental illness (e.g.,schizophrenia) God doesn't hold you responsible. It's God saying "not guilty by reason of insanity".And "illness" can be a purely biological thing which sometimes causes one to act abnormally and/or "sinfully".

I should have been more clear in my earlier post.

Not saying you are wrong but can you point me to the biblical text backing that up?

I remember reading about special consideration for the simple minded but not mental illness. (Again - not saying you are wrong)

Apart from the “hate” - opposition to homosexuality is biblical, not necessarily to homosexuals. To think otherwise is not to have “grown” in faith, but to have turned his back on God and His Word...not something to be honored!

Having worked for 20 years in a large hospital located in a major city I've come across *many* schizophrenics in my day.And I can assure you that terms like "simple minded" and "feeble minded" are perfect ways to describe such individuals. They're very well suited to describe many "retarded" people as well.

"...his son is gay. Having produced an abomination he has to come up with an excuse for it."

His son isn't "an abomination." His son is a human being. The Biblical use of the word "abomination" describes the act of copulation between men --- I repeat, the act.

The act would be an abomination even if the men involved were not gay, e.g. if they were ordinarily-straight men engaging in opportunistic sex. "On the down low" as they say, for example in prison.

Rainbow Useful Idiots.

The "gay rights" movement is an effective means of subverting the 1st amendment via the facade of "hate speech". The objective is demoralization of the American public.

The process of ideological subversion is described in detail by KGB defector Yuri Bezmenov:

Go to sleep dear. Adults are discussing things in terms that will just make you cry and stamp you little feet in frustration.

This from the newbie who'd only contribution to this thread was the (oh so hilarious) "Gay St/Church St" picture that EVERYONE on this website has already seen a dozen times.

Here is my point (see of you can get it into your head): The only reason that I am even aware of your existence is because you have you have been bombarding me with incorrect, lazy, incoherent pro-libertarian posts on another thread. Now, it stands to reason that if you are an honest libertarian -and far be it from me to presume that there are any people on FR who are calling themselves libertarian just because they want pot legalized, right newbie? -if you are an honest libertarian, you would be an advocate of gay rights. After all, the government has no business sticking it's nose in a guy's bedroom. Am I right? So, if you want to call yourself a libertarian, get it through your head that you're not smart enough to make people laugh (except at you) and start advocating for buttsex. See how that goes over with the evangelical crowd that this thread has attracted. And while you're at it, please live up to your thread to exit my life forever, as promised several posts ago on the other thread.

You can either be an honest libertarian and defent the soddomites, or you can be someone who just can't admit that his drug habit is effecting his life. It's either or. You can be both or neither.

BTW, if you want to be taken seriously by people who haven't seen your lame movie you might want to avoid using a picture that looks suspiciously like Freddie Mercury as your signature. At least when you are posting to a pro-gay editorial written by an obnoxious liberal who's at least as clueless as you are.

This guy is so deep underwater, he's fish-food. He's in liberal emote-a-thon mode.

In riposte to the babble blathered above, we might reflect soberly that axe-murderers face even more severe penalties "for being honest about who they are" -- and whose fault is that?

Poor little axe-murderers. Boo-hoo-hoo!

Instead of slinging around weak insults without actually making a point, how about just answering the charges?

I guess its because in addition to being ignorant, lazy, and deceitful you are also a weasel and a coward.

You were ignorant enough to post to me that all of the Founding Fathers were libertarians, even though I had pointed out to someone else a few posts earlier that this wasn't true by naming names. When I suggested that only newbies fail to read the thread before posting, you ranted about being called a newbie, and then lied about having read the thread because you are lazy and you try to lie your way out of your own stupidity. Now here you are on this thread, too much of a coward to openly support homosexuals, when the last time we heard from you, you were telling everyone what a hardcore libertarian you are. That makes you a weasel. And to top it all off, you imply that I might be gay among your insults. That just makes you dumb (you are a libertarian genius - sexual everyone's sexual orientation is supposed to be their own business for people like you). And inconsistent. But we knew both of those things already.

I can (and have) substantiated all of these charges quite clearly. I am expecting your pathetic response to me more lame insults with no substance. You have no business posting here on FR, and it has nothing to do with the fact that you think you are a libertarian.

BZT: I started this thread. I have a pretty good idea what it's about.

You aren't worth conversing with. You have neither the temperament or intellect to rise above tossing insults, so insults are all you received in response from me. Now, I'm done even insulting you, for fear you are in the grip of Stockholm Syndrome.

This is the thrird or fourth time you've insulted me, offered no original points, and then promised to exit my life forever. Perhaps you'll keep my word this time. I, otoh, engaged in the noble cause of saving you from your own hypocricy. I had the misfortunre of meeting you late last week because you came onto a thread I started late last week and posted a factually incorrect point to me. The fact that I had previously (and indisputably) refuted your point in an earlier post didn't sink in, so I asked you to read the thead. You didn't, and then lied about it. And away we went.

Here's the only point that matters now: If you are going to be on one thread insulting people who are not libertarians, you can't show up on another mocking gay people. Or whatever it is you think you were doing. If you're going to be a libertarian who fails to speak up for gay rights, that it becomes obvious that it IS just about the drugs for you. Be a man already.

BTW: You understanding of how the Stockholm syndrome works sucks, and your last sentence makes no sense. Are you calling me a latent homosexual with a substance abuse problem or are you suggesting that I help people like you who have those problems?

And, while I'm at it, do you still think that ALL of the Founding Fathers were libertarians, or have you figured that one out now? You are not fixable, and now you're just boring and repetitive. Go find someone else to publicly spank you. And good luck overcoming that latent homosexuality and substance abuse problem you see in everyone else who appreciates and understands freedom and personal responsibility.
