A Step in Faith (Evangelical Explains Journey From Hate-Filled Homophobe To Gay-Rights Activist)
Newsweek ^ | Oct 8, 2009 | Brent Childers

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) Americans are a diverse, extraordinary, resilient, and passionate group of forgiving men and women. I wouldn't be standing beside them demanding full and equal treatment under the law and speaking out against the harm caused by religion-based bigotry at the National Equality March in Washington, D.C., on Oct. 11 if I thought they were not created in God's image the same as myself, same as my family, as we all are—we are all God's children.

And I know better than anyone, since six years ago I was one of those bigots. At that time it would have seemed abominable to even consider attending a "gay-rights" event. To me, these would have been the people tearing apart the very seams of our culture and our country.

Today, it is a natural expression of who I am. Some might call that a miracle.

So what it is that would bring someone from a place where he once declared himself a "Jesse Helms Republican," a man who condemned homosexuality as a threat to children and society, told his own son that being gay is a ticket to hell, to travel from Hickory, N.C., to the West Lawn of the Capitol building on Oct. 11, 2009? How can one travel from the seemingly impossible road of bigotry to one of acceptance and love for our LGBT brothers and sisters? The answer is one that I hope religious leaders such as Pat Robertson and James Dobson (and most importantly,

If you engage in immoral/sinful acts as the result of mental illness (e.g.,schizophrenia) God doesn't hold you responsible. It's God saying "not guilty by reason of insanity".And "illness" can be a purely biological thing which sometimes causes one to act abnormally and/or "sinfully".

I should have been more clear in my earlier post.

To those who understand God’s word, this is the same as saying that we ought to have special laws protecting the incestuous or adulterers in general.

Not saying you are wrong but can you point me to the biblical text backing that up?

I remember reading about special consideration for the simple minded but not mental illness. (Again - not saying you are wrong)

Apart from the “hate” - opposition to homosexuality is biblical, not necessarily to homosexuals. To think otherwise is not to have “grown” in faith, but to have turned his back on God and His Word...not something to be honored!

Having worked for 20 years in a large hospital located in a major city I've come across *many* schizophrenics in my day.And I can assure you that terms like "simple minded" and "feeble minded" are perfect ways to describe such individuals. They're very well suited to describe many "retarded" people as well.

"...his son is gay. Having produced an abomination he has to come up with an excuse for it."

His son isn't "an abomination." His son is a human being. The Biblical use of the word "abomination" describes the act of copulation between men --- I repeat, the act.

The act would be an abomination even if the men involved were not gay, e.g. if they were ordinarily-straight men engaging in opportunistic sex. "On the down low" as they say, for example in prison.

What are you doing on this thread? Your political leanings should make you a gay right supporter, right?

OOoooh, Queen Ad Hominem graces me with yet another of her tiny little insults!

Go to sleep dear. Adults are discussing things in terms that will just make you cry and stamp you little feet in frustration.

>>Our first reaction to liberal crap like this

Rainbow Useful Idiots.

The "gay rights" movement is an effective means of subverting the 1st amendment via the facade of "hate speech". The objective is demoralization of the American public.

The process of ideological subversion is described in detail by KGB defector Yuri Bezmenov:

Soviet Subversion of the Free Press (Ideological subversion, Destabilization, CRISIS - and the KGB)

Shouldn’t this have been titled “A Step In Sh*t” rather than “A Step In Faith”?

I asked because, IIRC, G*d considered a man having sex with a man to be “an abomination”.

But, perhaps PreacherMan knows better than Moses, what G*d said to.

Another example of why, when I read the term, “Evangelical”, I’ve come to expect the subject to be yet another lost moral cause...
