China celebrated its wealth and rising might with a show of goose-stepping troops, gaudy floats and nuclear-capable missiles in Beijing today, 60 years after Mao Zedong proclaimed its embrace of communism. Tiananmen Square became a high-tech stage to celebrate the birth of the People's Republic of China on October 1, 1949, with the Communist Party leadership and guests watching the meticulously disciplined show of national confidence.

Celebrations began in the morning with troops firing cannons and raising the red national flag while President Hu Jintao, solemnly-faced and wearing a slate grey 'Mao' suit, looked on from the Gate of Heavenly Peace over the Square.

Most of these women in pink are said to be not real-life soldiers but those recruited by PLA to play one in the parade.

The first two in the lead at the top picture are reportedly professional models who did commercials for L'Oreal product or foreign luxury cars.

Yes, they can have more than one child, in several ways. First, if they live in rural areas, and the first child is female, they are allowed a second child (to help stop the abortion of females). Further, in most urban areas, if you have a second child, the penalty is now more often monetary than, well, medical. Chinese, like most Asian cultures, dislike embarrassment, and getting excoriated in the Western press for doing those forced abortions went a long way towards those rule changes. Clearly, they have population issues, and have to do something to keep a lid on things... and in many areas, either local tyrranical officials, or familial traditions, can lead to abortions against the mother's will... but that seems to be far more the exception instead of the rule these days.

For a nation that worships Mao, and the path of development and prosperity the Chinese people believe he charted, nothing less would do to commemorate its 60th anniversary.

But when it comes to the commemoration of China's 60th anniversary in the U.S., perhaps we could -- and should -- expect a little less.

Wednesday night in New York City, the Empire State Building will illumine its familiar spire with red and yellow lights in honor of Communist China. The Communism-themed color scheme will stay lit through Thursday night, much to the delight of China's consular officials, who were on hand for a ceremony in the lobby of the iconic building Wednesday morning, and to the acute dismay of the dozen or so protesters outside, and to many Americans who question whether honoring China's Communist revolution here is at all appropriate.
