The Headteacher Who Rescued Her School By NOT Giving Prizes to Everyone

A HEADTEACHER has turned round her failing primary school by reintroducing traditional prize-giving ceremonies.

Maureen Denningberg has also improved the behaviour of pupils by bringing in a ‘zero tolerance’ discipline crackdown.

Her policies fly in the face of those put forward in recent years by politically correct education experts and council bosses who claim that encouraging competition between children is wrong.

This has led to the widespread demise of traditional award ceremonies and even sports tournaments at state schools.

But Mrs Denningberg believes that children must learn they will only be rewarded if they work hard. Now her achievements at Dalry Primary in Ayrshire have been recognised by Audit Scotland, the public sector watchdog, in an official report that praised her as an example of a good leader.

Yesterday, the 54-year-old head, who took over the 360-pupil school in June 2003, said: ‘Our prize-givings celebrate children’s academic achievements as well as their successes in other areas like swimming and cycling.
“It seems wrong to me that all children should get awards or certificates to make sure no one feels left out.

‘That is wrong because it takes away from the feeling of achievement and pride that children and their parents have at award ceremonies.’”
