Stalins grandson blames Poland
09.10.2009 16:01
Yevgeny Dzhugashvili, the grandson of Joseph Stalin, is suing an opposition newspaper Novaya Gazeta and a civil rights society Memorial for defamation of the Soviet dictator and blaming Poland of having masterminded the libel.
Yevgeny Dzhugashvili says that an article published in Novaya Gazeta, in cooperation with Memorial, is a lie. The article claims that Stalin personally ordered the deaths of thousands of Soviet and Polish citizens in Katyn.
Stalins grandson, who was not present at the hearing in a Moscow court, is demanding 10 million ruble (23,000 euro) compensation for moral damage, claiming Stalin was not a bloodthirsty man-eater who committed crimes against his own nation.
Yevgeny Dzhugashvilis lawyer and historian Yury Mukhin said that for many people Stalin is the symbol of an honest and fair leader. He added that Novaya Gazeta and Memorial fabricated a story about the massacre in Katyn and that they act as Polands fifth column.
Deputy editor-in-chief of Novaya Gazeta Andrey Lipsky said that the libel case against the newspaper may bring positive results because classified documents with Stalins personal signature, which bore witness to the dictators guilt, will probably be revealed. Thus, a true version of history would be vindicated.
Novaya Gazeta is a liberal Russian newspaper known for being critical of Russian government policy. Between 2001 and 2009 four of its journalists, including Anna Politkovskaya, were murdered. Memorial is an international historical and civil rights society that examines crimes of the Soviet regime and monitors human rights in post-Soviet states and Chechnya. Together Novaya Gazeta and Memorial plan to open a centre for the memory of the victims of Stalinism.

There are people who actually are willing to admit that they are related to Stalin?

Poor Yevgeny. It’s got to be so frustrating to have to sue people instead of just having them, their families, friends and anyone who ever knew them, tortured and shot in the basement of the Lubianka.

Well he had to, didn’t he? I mean, be fair, there was nothing else he could do. I mean, I had transgressed the unwritten law.

So does Buchanan! And contrary to all evidence, Buchanan also believes Hitler could have been stopped without a major war and that he’d have kept his promises not to fight for anything but German rights.

Stalin had three children, and this guy is descended from his oldest. His dad is actually the subject of one of WW2's more interesting stories. He served as an artillery officer in the Soviet Army in WW2 and was captured by the Germans during the invasion of Stalingrad. The Germans offered to exchange him for a high ranking German general who had been captured, but Stalin refused, claiming that he could not rescue his own son while so many other Russian sons remained in German prison camps. After that, things get a little murky...the official Soviet line was that he threw himself into an electric fence to kill himself and prevent the Nazi's from using him for propaganda. The official German line was that he tried to escape, and unknowingly grabbed an electric fence and was killed. The longstanding rumor is that the Germans were so angry that Stalin had refused their offer, that they threw him into an electric fence as revenge.
Stalin also had a daughter, who famously escaped to the United States in the 1960's. She's still alive and lives in Wisconsin today.
