The number of children who have died from the swine flu has jumped sharply as the virus continues to spread widely around the United States, striking youngsters, teenagers, young adults and pregnant women unusually often, federal officials said Friday.
The deaths of another 19 children and teenagers from the new H1N1 virus were reported in the past week around the country, including two in Maryland, pushing the total number of fatalities to 76 among those younger than age 18. It was the largest number of pediatric deaths reported in a single week since the pandemic began last spring.
"These pediatric deaths seem to be increasing substantially," said Anne Schuchat, who heads the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases.
While most of the children who have died have had other health problems that made them particularly vulnerable, such as asthma, muscular dystrophy and cerebral palsy, about 20 percent to 30 percent were otherwise healthy, Schuchat said.
Between 46 and 88 children died from the seasonal flu in each of the last three years, so the fact that so many have already succumbed is disturbing, Schuchat said.
"It's only the beginning of October," she said, noting that the flu season usually starts much later and runs through May. "We saw a peak of deaths, you know, starting April, May, June. It started to level off this summer. Now it's starting to shoot up again."
In addition to the two deaths in Maryland, three were reported in Tennessee, seven occurred in Texas and one occurred in Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Florida, North Carolina, Oklahoma and Wisconsin.
The increase in pediatric deaths comes as the federal government's unprecedented vaccination campaign is just getting underway. Millions of doses of vaccine began arriving around the country this week.

Okay I just flew around the net a little because for some reason (in addition to having total distrust of this administration) the pandemic thing is not passing my sniff test.

Anyone else getting sick and tired of reading every excuse in the book why people are dying from everything in the world except swine flu? Someone is playing this down for some reason. Last week an employee at the University of Texas in Austin died from having diabetes, uh, oh yeah, and she just happened to have swine flu at the time. This week, her sister also died from swine flu, um no, sorry, not the flu because no one dies from H1N1 so instead she must have died because she was obese.
At our local schools, the absence rates have been high. I averaged 6-9 absences in each class period last week and the majority was from flu symptoms. A friend had to pick her kid up at noon today because he was running a high temp. Safe or not, the vaccine is too late because the flu is here.

Did you read on this mist they first rolled out?? It is a LIVE virus and can spread infection. Maybe they will get their 2 billion infected!
No, the live virus used in the nasal mist has been rendered impotent to reproduce. Spreading falsehoods about the vaccine isn’t helping, skippy. What you really want to check before allowing an injection is where it was made (only two companies of the five producing are in the U.S.) and what is in it (never allow a vaccination with a compound containing thimerasol because it is a neurotoxin).

20% of the kids at my son’s high school were out this week.
My daughters are high risk (epilepsy & asthma), and there are so many kids at school sick. I don’t think we’ll get the vaccine in time.
I did get them the seasonal and pneumonia vaccines.
We’ve all upped our intake of vitamins C & D, and we are all washing our hands a ton.

The live vaccine is attenuated. That means that the virulence of the pathogen (H1N1, in this case) is reduced or eliminated to the point that the body gets it, recognizes it, and creates anti-bodies against it. Nothing new. Nothing different. Some vaccines are and always have been attenuated.
The Chicken Pox vaccine is attenuated.
The Sabin Oral Polio vaccine is attenuated.
The Typhoid Fever vaccine is attenuated.
The Measles/Mumps/Rubella vaccines are and/or have been attenuated.
The Yellow Fever vaccine is attenuated.
They are safe for most people under most conditions, but some people shouldn't have attenuated vaccines - people with underlying immune issues, some cancer patients undergoing treatment, etc.
Luckystarmom, I have heard alot lately about Vitamin D. Can 6-11 yr. olds take D? How much would you suggest?
That was the big doomsday health scare a few years ago.
Beck had two doctors on yesterday, one in favor and one opposed to vaccination.
Opposed reasons, from a professor of medicine:
1. You should get the shot to protect your neighbor from getting the flu (yes, I replayed it to be sure)
2. If you get the flu you will be sick, but likely not very sick, as this is not a deadly flu.
3. If a lot of people get the flu it will disrupt work and may cause panic.
THAT’S ALL HE COULD COME UP WITH
The above was delivered in a very loud and forceful way, talking over the other doctor, I think to cover up the fact there aren’t any strong reasons to get the shot(s).
Against, from a practicing endocrinologist;
1. The vaccine hasn’t been thoroughly tested and may be more dangerous than the flu itself.
2. If you get sick it is likely you won’t get terribly sick.
3. The third reason is that many of the components are made overseas, and although they come from FDA approved labs, some of those labs have only been visited by the FDA once in the past 10 years.

I honestly wish that talk show hosts would realize that when two guests are talking at the same time we (the audience) are being done a considerable disservice.
I wish they would make a rule about this an enforce it.
Hannity especially seems to relish guests talking over each other. And he does it himself. Very irritating. I just punch another button on the radio.
Laura Ingraham is pretty good about this. Many times she has turned off the guest’s mike or phone connection to maintain order. Good for Laura!
