£1,000 fine for throwing food in trash under the 'zero waste' policy to cut greenhouse emissions

UK - Householders could be fined £1,000 if they throw food scraps and potato peelings into the dustbin under a Government 'zero waste' policy. They will be forced to sift through their rubbish for anything that can be recycled, reused, rotted or burnt for electricity.

The crackdown will create so much recyclable material that homes could be given five wheelie bins and waste boxes to cope. The controversial zero waste policy - part of the Government's drive to cut greenhouse gas emissions - will be unveiled tomorrow by Environment Minister Hilary Benn. The plans are due to be outlined at a 'waste summit' aimed at finding new ways to halve the 62 million tons of rubbish sent to landfill each year.

So I guessing I can no longer throw away old car batteries or motor oil?

Dear Citizen: You have been observed putting potato peelings into the wrong bin. You are ordered to report at once to the Food Waste Czar for evaluation and reeducation camp assignment. Non compliance will result in your termination.

Hahahaha! On my property in Kentucky I will have a 55 gallon drum with a few holes drilled in the bottom and there I will BURN my garbage, just like in the good old days. :)

Well, you dig a 1’ diameter hole about four feet deep in your back yard, and motor oil is no longer a problem. The batteries take a bigger hole, depending on how many you throw away.

Whenever I have an old tv, I just implode the picture tube, break down the set and chassis, and throw it away over several weeks of garbage. I did that with a 35 incher and all my old computer monitors.

I can imagine those kitchen slop containers will get mighty smelly between pickups, especially in the summertime. As to the rest of it, our municipality already does much of this, and it’s not really such an inconvenience. Technically I think they can fine noncompliance, but I’ve never heard of it happening. We don’t dig through our trash, we just separate things as they are discarded. The biggest inconvenience is that we don’t have a good place to accumulate the recyclables before schlepping them out to the bin in the driveway. We have 3 bins: co-mingled recyclables, yard waste, and all the other stuff. Our township has an arrangement whereby we get points according to the weight of recyclables we put out on trash day. Points can be traded in for discounts at some local merchants. I’m not entirely convinced the economics of the whole scheme work, but I have bigger battles to fight than this one.

What is really cool is if you put the picture tube in a trash bag then shatter it.

When I have an old TV, I put it by the side of the road. I can rely on someone picking it up and taking it home. Same goes for old furniture. No problem.

I highly recommend everyone watch this. It shouldn’t be too hard since it is VERY entertaining. Recycling is BS.

What you want to bet they will fine the homeowner when the street bums rifle through their trash and leave a mess.

I’m thinking the vermin will find the slop containers irresistable. Around here, the racoons would knock over or open up the containers and all the rest of the critters have a feast.

We have a bulk pickup day when you can put out your big stuff from refrigerators on down. Big yard waste too
You put out old TVs and computers and furniture and someone usually takes it

That sound you hear in the distance is me screaming at the top of my lungs as I run down the middle of the Interstate because I’ve become stark raving mad.

Lord and the Saints preserve us!!!

What about all the perfectly good food that grocery stores have to throw away because it’s past the “federally accepted date” allowed to be sold??? Do we fine the Grocery Store or the FEDERAL AGENCY that makes up the rules?

I vote for fining the Federal Government. Lock ‘em all up.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!

It might have been a cute video but I am a Roman Catholic and I take umbrage at Penn and Teller for their trashing the Pope on Showtime recently.

Thanks, but No thanks. I boycott Penn and Teller.
