Hadron Collider physicist Adlene Hicheur charged with terrorism
The Times ^ | 10/13/2009 | Charles Bremner and Adam Sage in Paris

A French physicist with the European atomic research centre near Geneva was charged with terrorism offences by a Paris judge last night after investigators said that he offered to work with the North African branch of al-Qaeda.

Adlène Hicheur, 32, who is of Algerian origin, was arrested last week with his younger brother after intelligence agents intercepted his alleged internet contacts with al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb.

The physicist, who works at the giant atomic collider at CERN (European Organisation for Nuclear Research), which straddles Swiss and French territory, told the Islamic group that he was interested in committing an attack but had not begun any material preparation, according to police sources. He had acknowledged contacting the militant organisation, they said.

The brother was released last weekend without charge.

Judge Christophe Teissier, of the anti-terrorist branch, ordered the French internal security service, the DCRI, to open an investigation into the possible offence of “association with criminals in relation with a terrorist enterprise”. Judge Teissier placed the scientist under formal investigation and ordered his detention.

The arrest raised the possibility that Islamist militants could be seeking nuclear weapons technology or planning to attack nuclear targets.

Dr Hicheur is reported to have worked for the British Government’s Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL) in Oxfordshire for about a year in 2005. He was placed under surveillance by French officers last year after US intelligence services intercepted internet messages he allegedly sent to contacts close to al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (Aqim).

However, his arrest last week has sparked a furious row among France’s anti-terrorist magistrates. Judge Teissier’s critics say that he missed an opportunity to obtain invaluable information about Aqim networks by moving to detain the suspect at an early stage in his investigation. They said that he should have

You were first by 1 second.

Or, to put it another way, you posted this story first by one trillion nanoseconds (or whatever the CERN measurement of particle travel is).

A new record, I’d guess.

Or it was a collaboration to test IPO speed?

Actually this story was posted this morning about 10:50 AM.

That make it more of an interesting occurance. If it was posted so many hours ago, what made two FReepers post it again within one second of each other? Therein lies the tale, or at least a fun late night treat.

By the way, this thread now sits atop breaking news. Where the story should be either way.

Think of it instead as an immense blessing.

Maybe it warps space so significantly that the only people that survive the singularity/collapse are the ones you shake hands with at church, and stand next to at the shooting range.

What would a physicist working on an Accelerator offer to al-Qaeda?

Besides pure research, accelerators have practical applications in medicine and industry, most notably in the production of radioisotopes.

A man with that technological background, a site to manufacture the weapon, and Muslim financing could make a Neutron Bomb — perfect for a surgical strike to kills Jews in Jerusalem (who reportedly have hundreds of ERWs themselves), while leaving the city mostly-intact ... and livable after the radioactivity rapidly decays.

“At RAL Adlene Hicheur (not e-Science-funded) is the ATLAS alignment co-ordinator. His general tasks include: Organization and chairing of the fortnightly ID Alignment phone meeting; Collaboration and regular (phone) meetings with tracking experts and ID software management; Organised and chaired alignment meeting at CERN on 23/Feb/2005. His specific tasks were: Started parallel-computing studies (for huge matrix inversion) on the RAL Beowulf cluster (SCARF), and co-ordination of this work; Planning and coordination of the alignment software migration/implementation in Athena; software tutoring/training/helping of new recruits in the alignment group (e.g: Florian Heinemann from Oxford, Sergio Gonzalez from Valencia); Development of Global chi2 alignment code in Athena software.”

A “neutron bomb” has considerable blast. Its claim to fame was that it could penetrate gamma shielding on tanks, to stop a massive soviet tank invasion.

A typical “enhanced radiation weapon” of the time had an explosive yield of .3 to .5 kilotons- half a thousand tons of bang, or .5 x 1000 x 2000, about a million pounds TNT equivalent, or about 140 OKC bombs. Not a mere firecracker. If you were not in a shielded tank, the difference between a neutron bomb and a Davy Crockett warhead would be unnoticiable.

The Left hated them; they could stop a Communist attack on Europe. They invented the claim that a neutron bomb killed people but left structures alone, somehow making them less moral than a conventional bomb that destroyed both. This has become widely accepted as truth, mostly through repetition an dlack of any counter.

Some “neutron bomb” designs went up to several kilotons.

The supercollider can’t make any significant amount of fissionables, or even dangerous isotopes. The flux is simply too low. The particle energy is very high, you can make tiny amounts of some very exotic isotopes, but you’d never make a half gram of plutonium.

I don’t think a terrorist could use an accelerator to nefarious ends. Everything that happens is controlled, nothing is done without a test plan. It would be like using the telescope at Palomar as a solar hot dog cooker, too many people would be involved to be able to do it secretly.

Sabotage, for sure, though.

Hicheur allegedly planned to blow up a Total oil refinery. The security source said: “He had offered his services to strike with an active service unit based in France. He had started to compile a precise list of intended targets including a Total oil refinery which would have caused an explosion which would have destroyed a city the size of London.

“Assassination targets including the president and interior minister were also on the list.”
