Hadron Collider physicist Adlene Hicheur charged with terrorism

A French physicist with the European atomic research centre near Geneva was charged with terrorism offences by a Paris judge last night after investigators said that he offered to work with the North African branch of al-Qaeda.

Adlène Hicheur, 32, who is of Algerian origin, was arrested last week with his younger brother after intelligence agents intercepted his alleged internet contacts with al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb.

The physicist, who works at the giant atomic collider at CERN (European Organisation for Nuclear Research), which straddles Swiss and French territory, told the Islamic group that he was interested in committing an attack but had not begun any material preparation, according to police sources. He had acknowledged contacting the militant organisation, they said.

The brother was released last weekend without charge.

Judge Christophe Teissier, of the anti-terrorist branch, ordered the French internal security service, the DCRI, to open an investigation into the possible offence of “association with criminals in relation with a terrorist enterprise”. Judge Teissier placed the scientist under formal investigation and ordered his detention.

The arrest raised the possibility that Islamist militants could be seeking nuclear weapons technology or planning to attack nuclear targets.

Dr Hicheur is reported to have worked for the British Government’s Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL) in Oxfordshire for about a year in 2005. He was placed under surveillance by French officers last year after US intelligence services intercepted internet messages he allegedly sent to contacts close to al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (Aqim).

However, his arrest last week has sparked a furious row among France’s anti-terrorist magistrates. Judge Teissier’s critics say that he missed an opportunity to obtain invaluable information about Aqim networks by moving to detain the suspect at an early stage in his investigation. They said that he should have

But but but what happened to the excuse that terrorism is caused by poverty and no education leaving few other options for the downtrodden...?

I wonder if suicide vest made out of strangelets would blow up the earth....

They would consider it "just" retaliation for Obama bombing their moon god The Moon this past Friday.

Pretty cool when you click on the webcams. Wait a few seconds and a black hole eats the collider!

Enough for a piece or two of popcorn as you watch a simulation of what the black hole will do to the room once it’s turned on.

I will heretofore refer to it as the White Hole.

I've never heard a better label than that. It spews forth unstructured quantum particles and chaotic energy in insane quantities, stolen by the insatiable singularity of its Black counterpart.

Frowning takes 68 muscles.
Smiling takes 6.
Pulling this trigger takes 2.
I'm lazy.

The supercollider can’t make any significant amount of fissionables, or even dangerous isotopes.

Not only can't the LHC produce non-significant amounts of isotopes, it cannot produce any isotopes. Hadrons = heavy particles, e.g. protons and neutrons (vs. Leptons = light particles, e.g. electrons).

They collide protons at speeds near the speed of light. Which collisions produce a number of other elementary particles - but no isotopes (actual atoms). It is just on another (smaller) scale.

Whatever nefarious plans this guy had, they had nothing to do with CERN as such. Unless he planned to sabotage the LHC, which would be costly but non-destructive beyond that.

It appears the guy is a confuser whiz.

A couple altered 1s or 0s would mess up the whole project.

Maybe he never wanted the Allah Machine to work? Just keep draining EUros into a black hole.

Jude Law cast in the role as the average joe trying to save earth??...Puhleez.

I was thinking of more of a Sam Bradford, QB for the Sooners. Indian blood, all around good guy,...hey don’t laugh. He would do better than a disheveled, drunken Hasselhoff, God bless him.

Maybe have Alec Baldwin as Satan’s pawn, surreptiously causing the destruction, bringing on Revelation prophecy and increases in gasoline prices.

Do we really want terrorist-physicists playing with atomic colliders??? If so, keep putting Muslims into these types of positions.

"Actually this story was posted this morning about 10:50 AM."

Well....depending on the particular experiment running on the al Hadron Collider, it may have been posted 3-weeks from now.

"Of course they’re going to be terrorists! Are they completely blinded by leftardedness?"

Nope! It's genetic (in demoncrats/socialists)....After all, they allowed our national labs get thoroughly infiltrated by the chicoms during the 70's, 80's, and 90's.

One can only imagine what 12 years of obama is going to do with our few remaining military secrets.....We'll probably have the moslems, chicoms, Venezuelans, and Israelis bidding for them on Ebay...

Ok, Law is out, Bradford would be better. Baldwin for irony. What about the two female leads?

I put in the other black holes, from RHIC and PBFA-2, so that the heroes can use a gravitational slingshot between the holes to eject them all, and I think I’ll plant them in Neptune since few movies include it.

You can make new elements by proton bombardment, I watched them make PET scan isotopes at UC Davis Synchro Cyclotron.

But those were only 60 MeV protons, and the target was in the beam directly. For my own work I used ultrapure aluminum as a dosimeter, looking for Na24 produced by spallation followed by alpha emission.

You are right, when a supercollider is running properly the only target is hadrons. Run the beam into a beam dump, though, and you’ll get activation.

The collisions will produce neutrons and other baryons, which can activate anything it hits, but on a mass basis that will be relatively small and impossible to collect in a jar.

I was at part of RHIC (the heavy ion feed line after the Tandem van de Graaf) and there were activated components there.
