Let the Red States Secede
Market Watch ^ | October 12, 2009 | by Brett Arends

Posted on 10/12/2009 10:30:04 PM PDT by devere

The biggest question about the new Schumer-Carper health-care plan on Capitol Hill is the one nobody's asking.

Why stop there?

In case you missed it, Sens. Chuck Schumer, D-New York, and Tom Carper, D.-Delaware, are considering a proposal that may, at long last, break the logjam over health-care reform.

They would create a public health insurer, the so-called "public option," but allow individual states to opt out if they wanted.

In other words: the blue states can have public health insurance, and the red states can go without.

You may wonder why it took so long to get here. If Blue America wants public health insurance and Red America doesn't, why should one of them end up denied? And this is not a new issue. Liberal commentator Paul Krugman, in his book, "The Conscience of a Liberal," argues that Harry Truman's plan for universal health insurance was blocked, in part, because Dixie didn't want integrated public hospitals.

The Schumer-Carper bill raises a terrific prospect. We could apply this principle all sorts of other areas of government activity, from taxes and spending to education.

If Blue and Red America want to pursue separate policies, why shouldn't they? The unspoken secret of American politics is that Blue America would be far better off, economically and otherwise, going it alone. Blue America has a huge amount to gain and almost nothing to lose from undoing Lincoln's Folly -- a.k.a. the Civil War, the War of Northern Aggression -- and leaving the South and other red states to their own devices.

Secession movements have sprung up in a variety of red states in recent months.

Contrary to conventional wisdom, maybe the thing about Barack Obama that offends the red states most is neither that he is black, nor that he is somehow socialist pink,

Krugman is so absolutely full of sh*t. Its always white southern people who are racists. They, according to this fake, are the root cause of all progressive failure. Krugman is a joke...

The “blue states” can have the public options and the people in the “red” states would have to pay for it. The cost shifting would be much worse than it is with Medicare and Medicaid. The private insurance clients in the private insurance states would have to pay for cost shifting by the Medicare which will be increased because Medicare funding gets cut by this healthcare bill as will as all the cost shifting that will accompany thepublic option coverage.

Sorry, but in 1948 the average white southerner was a racist, and Harry Truman deserves a lot of credit for undoing the racist policies of fellow-Democrat Woodrow Wilson by racially integrating the federal government. Times have changed a lot since then, and in 2009 black racists far outnumber white racists.

Be a shame is the ones who don’t work in all those blue states have to get off their butts and work enough to pay the premiums on the health care...

I’m ready. I say that the states and the feds cut loose and let us solve our own health care problems...nine will get you ten it won’t be the red states that come crying back to the feds for relief.

Sorry JerryP, but secession is only illegal. Fining young people who refuse to buy something (i.e. government prescribed health insurance) is Obaminable — as are the means by which some folks’ “Dear Leader” intends to foist ObamaCare on the nation. The RNC may not be able to stop him. If not, we’ll try other means.

“Secession is illegal, and the most anti-American idea one could think of.”

Under the 9th and 10th amendments it’s a pretty good bet that secession is legal. That incompetent hothead Jefferson Davis fired on Fort Sumter instead of filing suit in the courts, and secession got a bad name.

As for your “my party right or wrong” pitch, that’s hilarious! The party of John McCain and Lindsey Graham has a lot of uphill work to do to ever get my vote again. I’ll vote for Sarah Palin even if she runs as a Moosetarian.

His tone seem to indicate that it would be a ‘loss’ to the red states? Did I misconstrue that? The blue states would be better off because they have more money? Hell if that truly happened there would end up being a mass migration into red states to get away with their money!

Please please please let this be true. It almost sounds Constitutional. /s

The States should have the right to pick and choose what they want from central government and be taxed accordingly. Works for me!

The blue things unleashed from all principals of freedom and decency would be fun to watch. The only problem is they would all turn into Detroit and reject the agreement they made and make the red states bail their nasty bums out!

Why stop at the state level?

Anyone who wants public health insurance can fill out a checkbox on their tax filing, and pay an extra $3000+.

We can apply this to all sorts of government programs.

I’ve heard this bit of liberal fantasy FOR YEARS...

But all of these libs seem to forget that it’s not Red States, but RED COUNTIES. Do they intend to armed and forcibly keep the rural conservative areas of the Blue States in thier charge?

And, they ALSO forget that we have already seen what happens in Democrat Utopia’s when the Water, Food, Fuel, and electricity coming from the Red Counties gets cut off.

This sounds like a Trojan horse proposal to get government-run health care started in the Blue States and then make it too costly for the Red States to continue on with a private system.

One fact the author forgot to mention is that most US military personnel are from the Red States and the vast majority of them are Republicans. I’d like to see the Blue States recruit a real army of effective ground troops out of California, New England, and New York. Good luck with that.

Those income numbers from California sound way out of date. I’m sure that real per capita income has declined greatly in California in the last two years, especially in the last year. A lot of people were making a lot of money in California off the phony housing price boom and bust. Another thing to keep in mind about those state income numbers is that average income in the Blue States is inflated by a relatively small number of business people who have huge incomes. The typical worker in the Blue States has no more income than the typical worker in the Red States after adjusting for the higher cost of living in the Blue States, not to mention the higher crime rates, much longer commutes, and greater traffic congestion in the Blue States.

OMG.

We are way past "legal" now. We are deep into "survival".

"Legal" assumes 2 parties playing by a single set of objective rules.

They want to execute your parents, murder your unborn children, and rob you to pay for both.

What exactly do you propose we refer to in "law" to prevent this genocide, especially considering that they own the courts and define what "legal" means?

Life is a fight between weakness and strength. What is your suggestion for demonstrating strength?

I agree. Just do not believe that red staters won’t pay for it. Thats a lie. They might say we can “opt out” but that doesn’t mean they won’t make us pay for it. You can homeschool and send your kids to private school, but you still pay for public school.

They will not allow us to opt out of paying. Do you think all those new taxes on medical equipment, supplies, procedures, medicines, certain insurance policies etc etc will be somehow not collected in the red states? Of course they will.

That stuff about federal taxing and spending is distorted. The reality is that the big states (in population) subsidize the small states, regardless of political leanings, because of politics in the Senate where each state has exactly two senators. So the small states in population are vastly over-represented in the Senate while the big states are vastly under-represented. So more federal spending per capita naturally happens in the small states when spending bills emerge from the Senate, although the small states are about evenly blue and red. The “subsidizing” claims result because most of the biggest states are blue at this time: California, New York, Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Florida. Texas is the only big red state at this time.

So don’t blame greedy people in the Red States, blame the senators who spread the money around too evenly among all the states, large and small.

Those amendments say the people have powers not explicitly mentioned (like the right of secession), and the federal government has no powers not explicitly mentioned (like stopping secession).
