Poll shows Specter staring at 'near fatal' 31 percent re-election figure

HARRISBURG — Only 31 percent of Pennsylvania voters believe Democratic Sen. Arlen Specter should be re-elected, and 59 percent believe it's time to give someone else a chance, a state poll released today shows.

Specter's numbers are "staggering," said pollster Jim Lee, president of Susquehanna Polling and Research. An incumbent typically is vulnerable if fewer than 40 percent approve of his or her re-election, Lee said. The poll of 700 registered voters, conducted Oct. 7-12, has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.7 percentage points.

"When I see a re-elect in the low 30s, that's ... near fatal," Lee said.

A Susquehanna Poll in February found 38 percent of Pennsylvanians believed Specter deserved to be re-elected.

Specter, 79, of Philadelphia holds a 44-16 percent lead over Rep. Joe Sestak, his challenger in the 2010 primary, with 22 percent of voters undecided. Eighteen percent of those polled said they would not vote for either candidate or would vote for someone else.

Albert Pollock, 75, a Cheswick Democrat, said he has harbored doubts about Specter since the five-term incumbent switched from Republican to Democrat on April 28.

"I think he's done

If I haven't changed registrations by next spring, I plan to vote for Specter in the primary so he has to have his rematch with Pat Toomey which he tried so hard to avoid.

The harder you try and squeeze power.......the faster it slips through your hand.

I will be very happy to see spector retired.

Considering the news on Specter; I’d say he ought to be happy with 31%. I was expecting something on the order of 2%. So, he’s doing over 15x better than I was going to give him credit for.

I fear that this actually may be bad for PA. I think that if he wins the primary, but his numbers drop even lower, the democrats will pull a NJ switcharoo to put in a candidate that has a chance to defeat Toomey.

I only wish that those poll numbers applied to ALL the members in Congress!!!

Most of these clowns enter Congress paupers and become multimillionaires on less than $170K a year? And they spend TENS OF MILLIONS to get elected? This smells to HIGH HEAVEN!

That’s exactly what they will do. If Specter looks like a loser, he will resign early. They’ll promise him a lucrative post somewhere for his resignation.

Sestak (Sleeztak,) always bring to mind “Land of the Lost.”
Either way, if we can’t get Toomey in this time, PA is doomed.

The union establishment has always backed Specter, even when he had an “R” after his name. I suspect that’s the only thing which is keeping his ahead of Sestak.

Unless Phila. manages to conjure up in excess of 100% of eligible voters voting (which they have done on occasion), Toomey should win. Sen. Casey stepped into it when he voted against defunding ACORN and Rendell’s popularity is in the tank. Hopefully the independent voters in PA will decide to punish ineptitude by going Toomey.

Quick Arlen! Switch back!!

Winston Churchill switched parties twice. Conservative to Liberal, and back again, about 20 years later. Asked what this double switch said about him, Churchill replied:

Anyone can rat. To rat, and then re-rat, takes a certain amount of talent.

Arlen isn't that talented.

Why is Sestak doing so very badly?

If this poll is accurate at all, the GOP will have an easy pick-up in Pennsylvania to go with the pick-up they will get here in Colorado. Add NV, CA, AR, IL, CT, Possibly DE, Possibly the NY newbie, Bayh in Indiana is dropping, and the dems better hope things look brighter in the next 12 months.

Are their any good GOPers in Oregon or Washington????

See my post #33. There are always Jackasses who will vote for the establishment as the party bosses tell them to do.

I kid you not, in 2004 I worked a voting precinct in a local government building where all voters had to file by the time clock which had the list of the SEIU approved candidates. Specter was on that list.

If Specter continues to trail badly, look for the ObaMao machine first declaring neutrality in the race, then throwing their weight behind Sestak. Sestak is, after all, bought and paid for by George Soros. Specter is owned by nobody except his own inflated ego.
