The Tragedy of Krispy Kreme

Krispy Kreme had been a popular doughnut chain in the South since 1937, but remained unknown to the rest of us until about 1996. That's when the first Krispy Kreme popped up in New York City, on West 23rd Street. ..."
Krispy Kreme stock hit a high of about $49 in 2003. Then it started on a long downward spiral, losing about 90% of its value.
This company had problems that had nothing to do with its doughnut recipe.
It over-expanded and took on crushing debt. There were allegations of management misconduct. Some franchises went bankrupt. Competition was fierce in the cheap eats category. More people started consuming healthy foods.
In short, Krispy Kreme managed to lose money selling something that is both cheap and delicious.

I remember when Krispy Kreme doughnuts expanded into the Chicago area. I bought a dozen and brought them into work. They were soft, gooey, sticky and to my taste altogether yukky. I went back to Dunkin’ Donuts and never bought Krispy Kremes again.

I have been known...in my teens....to go into KK...buy the freshly baked ones....and pig out.

They were a fad, over expanded to the point they were trying to be also in several grocery store chains.
They are more expensive and became not so special which is why they imploded IMO.

I think the first time you eat a Krispy Kreme donut, you think, "Oh my God! Where have these been all my life! I'm in heaven."
By the third time, you're more like, "Actually, this wad of fat, flour and sugar I'm chewing is kinda gross."

They’re the most overrated donuts I have ever tasted. I prefer the donuts that come from the grocery store bakery, if that tells you anything!

I gave up eating Krispy Kreme doughnuts several years back. They just can’t be healthy. But for those Freepers who are still young enough to “recognize” their “immortality” I have to recommend them highly. Go buy a dozen hot ones and eat the whole box. It will be a memory that will last a lifetime. Of course that lifetime might be shortened a bit but by the time you are 120 years old you’ll be ready to go anyway. So eat up.
To: ETL
Years ago we had one in our city. When I was working the midnight shift we would drive by about 3 in the morning just to smell the air around the building. They closed years ago and now the doughnuts are delivered to our stores by truck. Just not any fun anymore.

Just a damned shame.

Here in the South, KK is a great product. It’s geared toward our tastes. We like our tea sweet and our donuts sweeter!

I agree. As a donut lover, I thought Krispy Kremes were the worst. Donuts are best served by the mom and pop stores that open at 5:00 am and close by 11:00 am. Always fresh!!

I LOVE Krispy Kreme. Only the traditional regular donuts, none of that extra stuff smeared on the outside, which detracts from the basic flavor of sugar and dough.
I used to fortify myself once a week at the Krispy Kreme outlet in Penn Station. More than one donut once a week would be hazardous to your health. But that was a treat.
I still have my Krispy Kreme baseball cap, which I bought from them after admiring it on the people working there.

Married now over two years with a one year old son.
No sleep, we both work in a stable job situation but time isn’t as available to be on the net as it was before.
We did a Baptism/first Birthday together.
The marriage and baby come later in life. I have a couple of decades on the wife, but she still manages to keep up with me at times.

Krispy Kreme are the Wonder Bread of doughnuts.
I'd rather eat a dog shite sandwich than either of those two products of modern chemistry.
To: caver
Less than 20% sugars actually. The same as any other glazed doughnut.
They may be over rated, but they are not any more sugared than anyone else’s doughnuts.
