SS just gave out $250/each to seniors a few months ago.

That’s what came to my mind immediately upon reading the title! He wants their support and will “pay” them for it.

So, I take it you would answer ‘yes’ when asked if you would take money from your grandchildren-— and great grandchildren though perhaps yet to be born? The nation’s original sin was slavery, our sin today is generational theft in the name of entitlement. It took a Civil War to do penance for the former-— penance is yet unpaid for the latter, but it will be paid by those not responsible.

From a senior: NO NO NO ... he sends me a check (or slips it into my Social Security payment) ... and I'll send it right back to him. I bought a gun with the last stimulus! Don't need a gun, got one! Don't need a T-Shirt, bought one for the 9-12 march, and I'm still proudly wearing it! Don't need anything else either except maybe a little Freedom and Liberty which are in greater demand and are harder to find than ammo at Wal*Mart! If he'd like to even begin to gain my favor, then he can stay off my Monday Night Football. Geez, enough already!

Mr. President, hear me: "MY VOTE ISN'T FOR SALE!"

President Barack Obama called on Congress Wednesday to approve $250 payments to more than 50 million seniors to make up for no increase in Social Security next year.

Remember when Pres. Bush was working to get tax cuts for taxpaying Americans, and Tom Daschle and his willing accomplices in the media pooh-poohed it because according to them, the "average family" would only get enough of a tax cut to afford a new muffler for their used car?

That's what we have here, folks - instead of a cost of living increase, Obama is proposing to give seniors on Social Security a new muffler for their used clunker cars that they couldn't even afford to turn in for the cash for clunkers debacle.

Turnaround is fair play, isn't it? Are there any Republican politicians who have the guts to criticize Obama for offering to buy mufflers for senior citizens?

How pathetic.

Take your 250 and cram it where the sun don’t shine, loser.

I paid in to SS over 40 years.

Grandchildren have to pay because Congress can’t keep their hands off the SS Fund.

Don’t blame the seniors who paid in for decades, blame Congress.

"By law, increases are pegged to inflation, which has been negative this year. "
Negative my arse. YOU LIED.

Agreed. Some years back (maybe they still do), Brazil pegged its inflation rate to the price of black beans in one state (I kid you not). When the price of beans started to escalate due to inflation, they trucked in loads of beans to depress the market.

Sniff, we are MUCH more sophisticated, we just lie.

That should cover about a weeks worth of health care premiums after obamacare goes into effect.

Or a muffler.

Agreed. Social Security complicates things because although it is a Ponzi scheme it is still set up as a form of insurance that people pay for and not just a govt gimme. People have a right to collect what they paid for. But since it's bankrupt the kids have to pay for it. That stinks.

The same applies to SS Disability Insurance. I paid into it so now I collect it. SSDI is not the dole. But sometimes it feels like it is.

If Soc Sec suddenly disappeared it might be the spur to reunite the fragmented traditional family structure. It would panic millions but in the long term individual liberty and responsibility would be restored. Now the only way this is going to happen is if the entire govt goes under.

Could happen.

I had a feeling this was coming. But, of course, they’ll make cuts in Medicare. Yeah, sure. Health care “reform” will make health care more vastly expensive, decrease quality, and send inflation through the roof.

Congress did exactly what the electorate asked of them. Did you protest raises and expansions in senior entitlements? Your generation is the first to declare its Greatness while assessing and presenting a bill due for services rendered to the generations that follow. There is no ‘right’ in what has been done. SS is the biggest Ponzi scheme in human history.

A major difference between SS and independent insurance is that Congress gets to play with the SS collection, whereas most independent insurance companies invest part of the premiums.

In the 60s, when I was in high school, I was one of those who thought SS would not be here when I reached the age. I had to go on SSDI a few years ago, due to a health situation. Health situations are not foreseeable and they do happen.

I am glad for SSDI, but had I not been hit with health issues, I, like many others, would still be in the workforce and making a heck of a lot more than my SSDI.

And Congress/government wastes a thousand times my SSDI every 5 seconds.

I paid into SS for over 40 years also.
All of them at the maximum amount except for the first couple years. And of course into Medicare also.
But the reality is that these are a flawed premise right from the start. The math doesn’t work when the system “matures”.

If our kids and grandkids are going to have a chance at a decent future, both SS and Medicare recipients are going to have to take a big haircut.
Otherwise, the country will consume all its capital paying for these huge shortfalls in social programs.
