Posted on 10/15/2009 9:32:56 AM PDT by Constitutions Grandchild
Senators diverted $2.6 billion in funds in a defense spending bill to pet projects largely at the expense of accounts that pay for fuel, ammunition and training for U.S. troops, including those fighting wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, according to an analysis.

I am confused, under the title it says WaPo and the link says Washington Times. Can that be clarified please?
Inouye, John Kerry (surprise), Mary L. Landrieu, David Vitter, Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins.
My bad. I asked the moderator to fix it. I was so angry, I typed first and thought later.
They both link to the Washington Times
It is the Washington Times. Read the article. All sorts of senators had a hand in this. Absolutely disgusting. Many of the ‘old school’ rat and gop senators. I have to say though, Coburn tried to stop this crap. He is a true representative of the people and the armed forces, unlike the rest of these dirty bastards.
So it was bipartisan.
And none dare call it treason.
Marines are dying in record numbers (and it is due to lack of supplies and reinforcements). My son is taking his commission, and I can’t stand to think of the miscreants and deviants he’s going to sacrifice himself for. I HATE THESE POLITICIANS. I HATE THEM, I HATE THEM, I HATE THEM. They are subhuman excrement. (Okay, I’m taking a deep breath now. I have concluded my rant.)
Troop funds diverted to pet projects; $20M for Ted Kennedy institute...
Among the 778 such projects, known as earmarks, packed into the bill: $25 million for a new World War II museum at the University of New Orleans and $20 million to launch an educational institute named after the late Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, Massachusetts Democrat.
While earmarks are hardly new in Washington, “in 30 years on Capitol Hill, I never saw Congress mangle the defense budget as badly as this year,” said Winslow Wheeler, a former Senate staffer who worked on defense funding and oversight for both Republicans and Democrats. He is now a senior fellow at the Center for Defense Information, an independent research organization.
Money for the Kennedy Institute was inserted by Mr. Inouye and Sen. John Kerry, Massachusetts Democrat.
- $25 million inserted by Mr. Inouye for the Hawaii Federal Health Care Network.
Mr. Inouye had a total of 35 earmarks worth more than $206 million in the final bill, and the ranking Republican on the committee, Sen. Thad Cochran of Mississippi, sponsored 48 worth $216 million.
The usual suspects I see, except I don’t recognize the Vitter guy, who is pubbie.
I am totally in your corner. And to think that all this was done to “honor” Ted Kennedy. Our politicians are beneath contempt.
Give them some time and they’ll figure out how to blame this on Bush..
David Vitter is the only semi-surprise from that list.
I pray that the American people fire all these and the other crooks that are running our country into the ground.
As a recently retired Army Soldier (last week, from Benning), I am disgusted at this news. Unfortunately, my discharge documents had hussein’s name in a few places, too. But, I will continue to write my representatives and be active in our country’s politics until my last breath or until this sort of garbage stops happening. And to think that the VA has a huge backlog on pending claims for us injured/disabled veterans while they spend money on silly pet projects to honor themselves! Ughh.
Either supply the troops or bring them home!!
This is what happens when criminals write laws.
Billions “diverted to pet projects”
Ridiculous. Our dog only costs us about $20 per week.
I am confused. Is this Bush’s fault or Fox News’ fault?
This must get on Beck’s show and other conservative outlets. The American people must be told the truth.
More and more Americans are becoming enraged.
My anger is as high as it can be. They are ruining the greatest nation on earth. Those “pet projects” will be blown to smitherines soon enough, and there won’t be a damn thing we can do about it. It will be Bush’s fault, though.
Let Iran have it’s nukes. Show Russia where OUR nukes are. Prop up and buddy up with dictaror scumbags. Cut our defense budget, and let our people die in Afghanistan rather than send them more support.
This administration is downright EVIL, pure and simple!
We are in big trouble, folks.
The list, ping
Thanks, I’ll be sure to call them. Maybe they can explain further why they did this and have deprived my son, a Corporal in the Marines, and his platoon, bullets and rifle practice. He has not fired a gun since March of 09 and could be deploying into harm’s way. I seriously question the purpose of this war and what we win if we win.
The enemy within.....
Ping for view after work...
Where did they divert the funds to ACORN?
My son feels ill prepared for combat. Hasn’t shot a rifle since March and could be deployed. So this is what they do with a volunteer military? He signed up to defend against enemies foreign and domestic. He didn’t sign up to become cannon fodder for no reason.
That is just so sad.
Thanks for putting the names up. I shouldn’t be amazed anymore.
The correct source is the Washington Times. Could you please correct it?
DemoCriminals have stooped to stealing troop monies now, hunh?
Whenever a headline says “funds diverted” instead of “Senator so-and-so diverted funds,” I want to know wassup. I want to know who, and how, and why. Funds don’t just grow little legs and divert themselves.
Ted Kennedy’s “legacy” gets funded with troop money.
schmuck also shmuck (shmk)
A clumsy or stupid person; an oaf.
[Yiddish shmok, penis, fool, probably from Polish smok, serpent, tail.]
I had a Doctor call someone a shmok..had to look it up to see what he meant.
You have a great tagline! I’m a peaceable old duffer, but if federal politicians start peeking out of their holes and tipping over, I’ll be glad to help drag them off to landfills.
This is outrageous. I sent this info to my friends at the Air Force base, along with the phone numbers of the culprits and told them to give ‘em hell. Like I told them, if this doesn’t piss off the American public, all is lost.
from the article:
While earmarks are hardly new in Washington, “in 30 years on Capitol Hill, I never saw Congress mangle the defense budget as badly as this year,” said Winslow Wheeler, a former Senate staffer who worked on defense funding and oversight for both Republicans and Democrats.
GK Chesterton was a genius with great wit, too bad he is not read more or taught in schools.
Nothing like starting the day off with more bad news. The Basturds..
(shrug) elections have consequences.
Coburn also reads all of his mail, and responds personally. It takes longer to get a respond, naturally.
I just received a personal reply to a message I sent him about three months ago. I could tell he really had read it and responded to my points. Heck, he even wrote that my points were excellent, so I’m a little puffed up today. Yay, me!
Did you see this? Note the last line in post #11.
