A 10th person in Maryland has died of swine flu, state health officials said Tuesday. The person, an adult from Western Maryland, had underlying health problems. As with other deaths related to the H1N1 virus, officials would not release further details.

Nationwide, 81 children have died of the swine flu, according to figures released Tuesday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Fellow Freepers, I can assure you that if this were happening during the George W. Bush administration, the stories of these deaths would not be mere side stories in newspapers.

We would see profiles of these children and their families on morning talk shows. CNN would be interviewing their parents.

The New York Times would ghoulishly report the latest hospitalization and death counts at the top of their banners, just like Abu Ghraib.

Obama's administration has been a massive FAIL on dealing with this flu epidemic, and it has cost the lives of almost 100 kids--and many adults, too.

And the media largely ignores this failure while helping prop up the notion that Obama has your best interest in mind regarding health care.

I don’t think this flu is any more dangerous than the regular flu, but if Bush were still President, or McCain were in office, every flu death would be laid at their doorstep. Not to mention the casualties in Afghanistan.

I agree completely that the media would have gone the "Bush's fault!" route immediately with this, but, honestly, what would you expect the fedgov to do here? Is this flu even out of proportion to our yearly flu seasons yet?

You know it. Remember during the ‘04 campaign when they actually blamed Bush’s admin. for the flu shot shortage?? Unreal.

You know it. Remeber the flu vaccine shortage a few years back? They blamed Bush for neglecting the elderly.

I don’t EXPECT them to do anything. I EXPECT BO and his pack of losers to be blamed for this just like Bush would be blamed for it.

Good God Almighty, REMEMBER THE MADCOW DISEASE CRAP??

The media milked it over and over and over...and the BIRD FLU, too...trying to link it to a non-caring Bush administration.

The numbers for H1N1 are far worse under BO, but no linkage.

Additionally, the Drive Bys could AT LEAST be saying, “The federal government has been unable to stop the deaths caused by H1N1, yet Obama wants to take over your health care...”

I know this is a bit of a fantasy, thinking the DBM ought to be objective—and that is the purpose of posting the story. :)

There is a shortage now. I’m not that worried, but my kid hasn’t had his flu shot (regular flu) yet because there is a shortage. I’m not getting him the H1N1 flu shot because it hasn’t been tested. I guess this is all Obama’s fault.

Here in NM, it is my understanding (haven't found a place to confirm, but I have heard it from more than a few people from different areas) that they are not even swabbing to determine whether or not it is H1N1. Apparently, the motive may be to quell panic.

I don't know anyone who doesn't know someone who has H1N1 (granted, I don't know a ton of folks here). I know three folks personally who may currently have it, but since they are not swabbing to test, no actual confirmation, but symptoms are right.

They are also saying that if you have the flu right now, it is likely H1N1 as the regular flu hasn't shown up yet. Not sure about that, but it is reasonable.

A young child from a local gradeschool died a couple of weeks ago from H1N1. The child apparently was in good physical condition with no other contributing factors.

had underlying health problems

That seems to be true of most of the deaths attributed to the current swine flu outbreak.

I heard a radio news report earlier this week that said 5 had died (Arkansas, IIRC) and they all had underlying health problems.

My daughter is a high school teacher in SC. It will cost her $18. to get a swab and determine what it is if she gets sick. I wonder if it is that way for everyone?

Do some reading- there have been reports getting the regular flu shot makes you more vulnerable to getting H1N1!

I’m holding off getting the season flu shot for me- but had already got them for the kids

Not sure, but I'd pay it. If nothing else, to ensure it gets recorded somewhere. Just to see how widespread and how fast-traveling this bug is.

They are admitting (not loudy) that the 14 yr old who collapsed in her Baltimore school and died in MD had no underlying health conditions-

hope they solve the mystery of what makes certain kids more vulnerable to disastrous side effects

It's getting to the point where I'm answering the T.V.; "Yeah, H1N1" when they say underlying health problems...

It’s obviously Bush’s fault. Everything else is. In NM, people are occasionally dying from bubonic plague. Are the H1N1 cases showing up on the reservations?

Since most of the deaths from swine flu also had underlying health problems, perhaps swine flu is the bambicare stealth method of reducing the number of unhealthy people.

Fellow Freepers, I can assure you that if this were happening during the George W. Bush administration, the stories of these deaths would not be mere side stories in newspapers.

So on one hand we have Freepers saying the story is being underreported as to not cause embarassment to Obama.

And others are saying swine flu is being overhyped as a means for Obama to declare martial law.

In other words, another typical day on the internet.

I see what you see.

The Roswell Daily Record ran a article saying all flu in NM, right now, is H1N1.

I never get sick, if I do its 12 hours of sleep break the fever move on............this thing kicked my butt for 3 days and now 7 days later I am feeling better, my doc said, it is hitting people like me the hardest, good immune systems have the hardest time with it. Strange flu.
