Colorado cops mull probe of balloon-boy family over hoax suspicions
The Vancouver Sun ^ | October 16, 2009 | Jorge Barrera

Posted on 10/16/2009 7:53:50 AM PDT by GoldStandard

Colorado authorities met Friday morning to discuss whether they should investigate suspicions a family that claimed their six-year-old boy was trapped in an experimental, saucer-shaped ballon set up the international spectacle.

Colorado authorities chased the balloon for three hours, across several counties believing the boy was trapped inside, while television cameras followed the silver balloon's every dip and dive.

When the balloon finally landed in a farmer's field about 80 kilometres southeast of the boy's home in Fort Collins, Colo., they found no child inside and speculation immediately began that he may have fallen out during the flight.

But Falcon Heene was hiding in the attic and now suggestions are swirling the whole thing may have been a hoax.

Larimer County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Deputy Kathy Messick said the county sheriff was meeting with investigators and command staff to discuss their next investigative moves.

"They want to determine if there is something else going on besides what they presented to us initially," said Messick, in an interview with Canwest News Service. "Some people think it's a hoax and we are going to determine whether we are going to go down that avenue."

I imagine they had a pretty good idea from the beginning that there was a strong possibility of a hoax. They probably just wanted to give the parents some rope to hang themselves with, so to speak. Otherwise if they had said they suspected a hoax from the beginning, the family might well have shut up and not talk to the media. At least not without rehearsing their story a few more times.

Sort of like Colombo saying to the killer “oh no, you’re not a suspect, i just need to ask you some questions to tie up a few loose ends here for the report.”

I thot Daddy was lying, too. The minute he is asked, he turns and accuses Larry King or Wolf or whoever is inquiring/ kind of defensive, if you ask me. Especially with their background of thrill-seeking, attention-seeking.

They can’t cross-examine the kid and can’t prove anything, so they should just leave it alone.
Maybe a hoax...but....let it go.

I was amazed at the speed the ballon was flying.
Much faster than the 25 mph average estimated on TV.

I hate to say it, but look at how many “news” stations carried it BEFORE vetting it to make sure that it was a real story. The police had no other option but to make sure that the kid was safe. The media drives stories and unfortunately stories drives what others must do.

If these are the same brand of Colorado cops that investigated Jon Benet Ramsey’s disappearance, responded to Columbine and enforce the Denver pit bull ban, this whole thing is apt to end up with the helium distributor’s brother’s siamese cat being euthanized.

The only good thing about this stunt was that it preempted Obama’s visit to New Orleans on cable news.
I would be very angry if I missed a flight because the airport was shut down. Denver is a major hub.

I too suspect that this is a hoax, but I could be wrong. Still, it is incumbent upon the authorities to investigate. If it turns out this was a hoax, the parents oughta be compelled to reimburse the cost of looking for their kid. And maybe some jail time for fraud? I don’t know, but certainly, there should be some punishment if this was a scam.

Like I said on another thread, if the balloon is tethered in the back yard, for this little tike to crawl in, he’d have to pull it down to ground level.

If he could pull it down, assuming he wasn’t using some sort of pulley system, then it wouldn’t lift him. Period...

I’ve wondered a couple of times if the thing got loose by accident so they they cooked up the story so authorities would help get it back.

I was sick to my stomach and could almost picture the poor kid hanging from this thing and then jumping in terror or something.

If it turns out to be a hoax I hope the Dad get’s jail time. If not, I hope they recover quickly and do well.

Id did some calcs this morning and this thing had about 100 pounds of lift minus the weight of the ballon and attached ropes so it certainly COULD have carried the boy.

The father would have CERTAINLY known the exact amount of lift it had within 10lbs or so.

Yeah, but all the criminals were watching the coverage, twittering and scanning the net - so they didn't comit any crimes while the story was hot.

The family was on wife swap. I had just watched it (DVR) this week and the dad seemed entirely UNHINGED, he would go off on screaming tirades at the ‘new’ mom, like a 5 year old throwing a tantrum. The kids are out of control. I thought at the time that if CPS was watching this, they should be concerned for these kids. The parents take the kids out of school to chase after tornadoes, the dad drives his motorcycle INTO the tornado. When FOX showed the picture of the family, I thought, attention seeking HOAX.

I had already posted to you on a previous thread which has now gone to the third page back. I thought I would like to repeat the main point I tried to make.

The word "gondola" was the description of any appendage to a balloon. I followed the media coverage and was taken in by the supposition of a child being in the craft.

What I don't know and I maybe slow on the uptake, is that the "bucket" shaped bottom was seemingly part of the whole thing.

If it contained helium itself, then there is no way any human could have got in there. Again, this was rationalized by some media, that a "basket" was originally attached. The hunt was on for such an attachment. All in vain.

More questions need to be asked.

How could that be? Do you know the diameter of the balloon?
I’m not saying you’re wrong but on Mythbusters, it took, literally, thousands of balloons to lift a little girl a few feet in the air and it seems that a thousand balloons would have more volume that that craft.

From Wiki, I know, I wouldn’t put my life on their reports.

Carried Away

The Build Team takes on a gag used in many comedic works, where a baby or small child could be lifted into the air and fly away unintentionally when given helium balloons.
Myth statement Status Notes
A 4 year old child can be lifted by a bunch of party balloons. Busted It would require such a large number of balloons (3,500) to lift an average four-year-old girl of 44 pounds (20 kg) just a few feet off the ground that there is no way the myth could have happened unintentionally.

Neighbor Bob Licko, 65, said he was leaving home when he heard commotion in the backyard of the family. He said he saw two boys on the roof with a camera, commenting about their brother.

Story continues below

“One of the boys yelled to me that his brother was way up in the air,” Licko said.

Licko said the boy’s mother seemed distraught and that the boy’s father was running around the house.

‘We Did This for a Show’ - Of course, they were taping it. The thing is, the dad really might have thought the kid had crawled in it. Not knowing, he freaked. In the end. The the kid, or all three kids, punked their dad.
Just a guess.

Not to mention put the rescuers lives in danger. I read one article that said they considered lowering someone from a helicopter, onto the balloon to try to bring it down. Can you imagine if they attempted this and the man died?

If it was a hoax, strictly by the kids, the parents should pay all the costs of the rescue efforts. If the parents were in on it, they should pay the costs and do jail time.

LOL!!! The laws of physics strike again!

The media's gullible reaction shows just how well educated "journalism" majors really are...

Of course, most of them actually believe that a shotgun blast can knock a 200-lb man ten feet backward, through a wall, and twenty feet out into the yard -- yet not even ruffle the shooter's hair...

The minutes before landing looked much faster, BUT, that could have been the visual effect of the copter moving around the balloon position.

Yes it is a disk approximately 20 feet across and 5 feet tall.

One cubic foot of air has a weight or mass equivalent of about .078 pounds and helium .011 pounds for a net lift of .067 pounds per foot.

If you watch this video they made, it sure looks like it wouldn't lift anything of any substantial weight for as slow as it rose!

Although, I wonder how much the balloon weighed? Looks like it could've weighed close to 100 lbs, I'll bet!

At sea level. Lower atmospheric pressure at Colorado altitude reduces that to 80.

Then it's not a cylinder but an oblate spheroid - and from the video not completely pressuirized.

figure 60-70 lb lift tops.
