WASHINGTON - The unprecedented number of death threats against President Obama, a rise in racist hate groups, and a new wave of antigovernment fervor threaten to overwhelm the US Secret Service, according to government officials and reports, raising new questions about the 144-year-old agencys overall mission.
The Secret Service is tracking a far broader range of possible threats to the nations leaders, the officials said, even as it also investigates financial crimes such as counterfeiting as part of its original mandate.
The new demands are leading some officials, both inside and outside the agency, to raise the possibility of the service curtailing or dropping its role in fighting financial crime to focus more on protecting leaders and their families from assassination attempts and thwarting terrorist plots aimed at high-profile events.

I wonder if the “artists” who wrote about different ways to assassinate President Bush and actors who suggested torture and execution were also investigated. If so, they would have been equally strained.
so many bloggers to visit, so little time
We live in a screwed up world when the assasination of Obama will be viewed as a hate crime.
The absurdity of this from the same set of hypocrites that defended movies made about assassinating Bush is amazing.
Of course he is going to be hated HE hates Americans!
Gee..maybe if the Kenyan didn’t fly to a new city every day for a campaign stop he’d be safer?
agenda time again .
This time Boston globe into making everyone feel sorry for their messiah.
There’s an assumption here that our leaders should not be threatened; I reject this assumption, if leaders do not want to be threatened then they should act Justly.
Jefferson, I believe, noted that when people fear their government there is tyranny, but when governments fear their people there is liberty. What could make government more afraid than the very real possibility of the killing of leaders who refuse to abide by the Constitution? (If a second Magna Carta incident is needed, then so be it.)
a rise in racist hate groups”
- The Obama Administration.
- The Congressional Black Caucus.
- The NFL Players’ Association
- La Raza
But of course, the Boston Globe is referring to those 8 or 9 “Neo-Nazi skinheads” that are utterly terrorizing America.
are racist hate groups illegal?
With double / triple the number of agents.
The Boston globe had no problem with Bush infact they thought it was alright that folks called for the death of Bush and showed the signs all the time.
They never reported back then how the left every day said they wanted Bush dead etc
SS = drama queens
Just another baloney article by the GLOBE (owned by the NYTIMES)setting the agenda in case something bad can be pinned on the right.
I would not put it past Soros and Co. to underwrite an “incident”...then pin it on Beck or Limbaugh.
Can see it coming.
I haven’t done an anaylsis, but I’ll wager that the Clinton appointed supervisors in the Secret Service investigated very few threats made against George W. Bush...Just off the top of my head, I can’t think of even ONE...
Oh my, this sounds like a job for...
the civilian security force!!
Just as strong, just as powerful, just as well-funded as the miltary!
