Skip to comments.Dems see path for Deeds in Virginia

With just over two weeks left until Virginias gubernatorial election, Democrat Creigh Deeds is left with a narrow path to victory, one that hinges on energizing key demographic groups and the durability of the Old Dominions new politics.
Even as Deeds trails Republican Bob McDonnell by eight and nine points in two of the most recent polls, his campaign and other analysts can still envision a comeback made possible in no small part because of the states political turn leftward.
Virginias Washington, D.C. suburbs, where one-third of voters reside, have gone from being a battleground region to a Democratic bulwark in recent elections, making it dangerous to write off Deeds just yet.
The demographic shift of the state combined with what we have done as a party allows us to have air in our lungs, said Deeds campaign manager Joe Abbey.
Deeds, a state senator, represents the first true test of just how much the tectonic plates of the commonwealths political culture have moved.

Joe Abbey: master of the mixed metaphor.
All of the illegals and other immigrants have gravitated toward Northern Va.
Not this time, dems... not this time.
That idiot Terry McAufflic was on Fox today trying to explain why Deeds isn’t winning - didn’t work....Chris Wallace and Rove were both laughing at him....
LMAO it is funny watching the media spin a loss.
The democrats are watching Va. on how they will vote for 0bamaCare.
What a joke.
The folks in Southside couldn’t get their lawns mowed without a regular supply of Fresh Mexicans.
exactly why I posted this for all to see.
Do you remember what McAuliffe said?
http://www.bobmcdonnell.com/ for Governor
http://www.billbolling.com/ for Lieutenant Governor
http://www.cuccinelli.com/ for Attorney General
Great article that conveniently ignores the fact that this is 2009 not 2004 or 2006 or 2008!
Don't count your chickens ...
The way elections have been going nationally, it is hard to believe any repub could win a race.
I'm sure some last minute ballots in the 10’s of thousands will appear and Deeds will be the next Gov.
Yeah, if McAuliffe was part of the plan to get Deeds elected, I think it backfired. What a clown. Of course, while McAuliffe put on a show for Deeds, I don’t think his heart was really in it.
Right, because all the pollsters are just too stupid to know the demographic makeup and to adjust their samples accordingly.
Of course, there’s also the inconvenient truth that Deeds isn’t liberal enough for the liberals in NoVa (because he isn’t anti-gun), and republicans do win in parts of NoVa regularly.
If it’s even close, it will be jammed up in the courts for as long or longer than the Coleman/Franken race in MN was. It’s got to be a blow out in order for McConnell to survive the aftermath.
Va. needs to ban ACORN and moveon from Va.
“...I grabbed my horns and coat and got out of there eleven years ago.”
Me too. I practically skipped the way to my car as I left the Northern Virginia area 12 years ago. Came back to Washington once, this past September 12th.
LOL at the Lies here.
The immigrants don’t vote in large numbers in NoVa. What has really turned places like Loudon and Fairfax County (the two wealthiest counties in the United States) left has been the influx of gubmint employees and folks from places like New York and New Jersey.
Watch the video if possible. I dont remember the full exchange but at the end McAwful tried to drop in a line about Deeds and Corzine and Rove whipped out a newpaper article from his folder quoting exactly the opposite of what McAwful said. it was funny, Rove knew he would pull that line and had him in checkmate before he even went on the show. It was a Rovian moment, where Rove is 9 thoughts ahead of McAwful.
Pigs feeding at the government trough. When the country collapses and its various regions regroup, who gets these people?
McAwful probably thinks Deeds is losing, because he, not McAwful, won the primary.
I love the internet. I found a part 2 of 2 that would play. Rove had a quote from the Richmond paper where McAuliffe said in the democrat primary last spring that Deeds can’t win because he’s in favor of raising taxes. I’ll try again later and maybe the ‘error occurred’ message will be resolved and I hear the whole exchange.
That was it. You could see McAwful at the end try to spin it as “that way the primary” but Rove knew he had him.
I'm pretty sure what he means by "what we have done as a party" is code for "get ready for voter fraud on a scale never before seen."
VA Democrats are worried about a collapse of down ballot races from a 1994 style disproportionately Republican turn out.
They may even be right.
Congressional Democratic leaders are acting like there is a Republican land slide coming in VA & NJ Governors races.
For whatever reason, blacks and the 18-29 year old age group just aren’t motivated to back Dems in Jersey and Va. If they aren’t motivated now, then they won’t be motivated by Nov 3rd. Obama, Biden, and other Dem celebrities have visited Jersey & VA countless times during the summer.
“The demographic shift of the state”
That’s exactly how the left will make conservatives politically irrelevant.
It’s surprising how unmotivated the democrats are. Last spring in their primary there was only a 4% turnout for governor and two other statewide races. That’s unbelievably low. It was even high profile with McAuliffe spending lots of $$ and three men in the race making lots of noise.
The problem is the suburban ditzy women who decide NJ elections will either go for Corzine or Third Party Daggett.
I saw a rainbow and a unicorn today.....
A lot of those gubmint workers in N VA work for those scams Fannie & Freddie. Sub postal workers trying to do govt secs. It is all designed to make Goldman Sachs richer.
d-duh d-uh d-don’t think s-so...
who gets these people?
Who ever has a plentiful supply of good rope!
McDonnell winning will be huge. A GOP sweep will be nothing short of colossal.
There was a poll breakdown the other day presented on either Fox or Lou Dobbs that indicates that McDonnell is ahead even in northern VA.
It will come down to the ground game, though. With ACORN and other corrupt rat organizations involved, it’s hard to say that Deeds can’t pull out an illegitimate win. They did it in MN’s U.S. Senate race.
I agree. It’s very likely. Unless the pubs have a good ground game and watch every ballot like a hawk, they can easily lose any election no matter if the polls show their guy ahead 65-35.
This Daggett guy in NJ is going to hand the governorship for Corzine by bleeding votes from Christie. Why does this always only happen to pubs? Are there so many seemingly conservative independents willing to do this, or were they rat stealth shills from the first day they entered politics?
What’s the story on Daggett? Sleeper agent for the rats or legitimate candidate?
Christie will lose in NJ, sad to say. Daggett’s presence assures that.
Yes, losing because of a 3rd party candidate happens primarily to Republicans, but it also happened in Florida in 2000, when Ralph Nader got 90,000 votes, so Bush was able to beat Gore.
Another thing.......winning in VA will be valuable, of course, but it will be brushed off as VA being basically a red state except for the last election, so move along folks, nothing to see here. What would be huge would be to win in NJ, but I seriously doubt that will happen. The presence of Daggett in the race assures a Corzine win. NJ has been reliably blue, so a win there would have been an earthquake, but a pub win in VA - not so much.
There simply hasn’t been any of the ACORN and La Raza visibility in No. VA that we had in 06 and 08. There seems to be a lot of apathy, if not disillusionment, among the likely Deeds supporters quite possibly because the Bammy didn’t deliver.
True (as far as we know, anyway). But it’s almost always the pubs who get hosed in 3-way races. Recently, that’s how we got “Al Franken.” That’s how we got Bubba. Twice.
