Mexican family finds work, then loss, in US

EL CENTRO, Calif. (AP) - Esteban Contreras had a bad feeling when his daughter and her husband said they were going to sneak across the border with their children.

He remembers telling his son-in-law: "You're going to put your children's lives in danger. You're going to put your wife's life in danger, your own life."

"He replied that he found a good smuggler, that everything would be all right, nothing would happen," Contreras said Friday in an interview with The Associated Press.

....a sad story indeed....I’m weary from reading these things....time to get that wall built along the entire border.

Fixed it.

It’s time to toughen up the border and send a hardline message to the Mexican government. Those fools down there have got to stop being so cavalier with their own lives. Think of the stupidity of the driver of the SUV! If he’s caught, he can try again next week. Now people are dead and he’s in real trouble.

Which reminds me. Just how bad is it in Mexico that healthy people who are loyal to their own kind and their own kind only are willing to risk their lives to get to America? Mexico must really suck!

It has always amazed me that a country with all the natural resources could have it’s citizens so poor. Our Founding Fathers put much in place that would empower the individual. Not just a few ruling families.

Yes, but opposition to it is fierce because opponents know (and fear) it will work.

Cecilia testified that the driver ignored passengers' pleas to slow down after the chase ended. The SUV crashed about 10 minutes later.

Sooo.. he crashed 10 minutes AFTER the chase ended? With 20 people in the SUV, I'm sure there are a few that can testify who was actually driving.

More suffering to be laid at the feet of gutless & opportunistic politicians, unscrupulous employers and greedy race hustlers.

They're racking up quite a body count with their intentionally lax immigration policy. They will answer for their selfishness one day.

Obama and the democrats in congress will be fixing this problem so these poor people won't get injured sneaking across the border.

Illegals will soon be strolling across the border in pure daylight, stopping only to pick up their Amnesty card and Social Security card, sign up for unemployment, welfare, food stamps, free medical, free schools and colleges, and get the paperwork started on their government assisted home mortgages.

It is called Socialism. A few very very wealthy who are in bed with a corrupt government and many many poor with nothing.

Coming soon to a country near you.

It's so hard and dangerous for Mexicans to enter the U.S. illegal

500,000 illegals march on Dallas Texas in 2006 making demands and threats while shoving foreign flags into the Texans faces.

I feel bad for the kid, because it wasn't his choice, but the rest of them? Thppppt. Don't give a rat's @ss.

And the rest of his family is over here working, when legal citizens are going bankrupt, getting foreclosed on, and we have double digit unemployment for actual citizens. In this economy, we need to demand that the federal government make the employer verification system for social security numbers mandatory. Right now, it's voluntary.

It's nice to know that I'm laid off, drawing less than $4 an hour unemployment, paying $163 a month for Cobra, even with the federal 9 month subsidy, and his whole family of illegals is over here, and they're gainfully employed.

I think it’s pretty bad. I know one lady that works in a hotel in Ft. Stockton, TX that says she goes across the border 1x per month to take gifts to portions of her family left in Mexico.

She is here legally, but they’ve never tried. I asked how far it was and she said about 2 hours. She said you’d never find it without a hand drawn map as their “homes” are down dirt roads and they have no running water or electricity.

She said she takes clothes, shoes and food that they cannot afford to buy. She works a 2nd job so she can do this w/o depriving her own family....

Sounds bad to me.
