Journalism is at risk and American society must act to preserve it, according to a report co-authored by The Washington Post's former executive editor.
In a paper commissioned by the Columbia University Journalism School, the ex-Post editor, Len Downie, and Michael Schudson, a Columbia professor, argue the government, universities and nonprofit foundations should step in as newspapers suffer financially.
The authors recommend that the Internal Revenue Service or Congress ensure the tax code allows local news outlets to operate as nonprofits. Downie and Schudson also urge philanthropic organizations to support local reporting. They suggest the Federal Communications Commission establish a fund using fees from telecommunications companies or Internet providers for grants to innovative local news groups.

Journalism is at risk because journalism is dying of cancer. Let it.
Oh YES...report the local stuff only. Leave the commies alone
Give them an EFFIN' PAIN PILL ! ! ! !
I am sorry - the death panel says “YOU DIE”
There is no journalism, only controlled WH propaganda. It's the commie way.
Leftist propaganda at risk.
It ain’t journalism. It’s the demoncrat talking points repeater service.
The dogs don’t like the food? Kill the dogs!
These moonbats want the media treated as a non profit to avoid taxes. Having the tax burden removed will insure their survivability. While at the same time, they want to increase taxes on everyone else which makes their survivability more difficult.
American universities will continue to produce journalists. Journalists will continue to leave the profession like I did.
Not to worry, Nita Dumb will be sending out all future journalism? from barry’s cellar.
I wonder how Fox News’ bottom line looks...
Bet they don’t need no stinkin’ bailout.
Journalism has collapsed under the weight of its own incompetence.
LET IT FAIL! NO MORE BAILOUTS!
In out local paper a parasitic commie college prof and an American alternate columns.
The other day the commie wrote that we wouldn't have so many
ignorant people if the media “interpreted” the news better for them.
Maybe we should tax any stories (print or telecom) that don’t meet the definition of objective, as I learned it in J-School in the immediate post-Watergate era. The taxes collected could be used for the suggested purposes, but the fact of taxation would revert journalism to what it was and should be, making newspapers once again a viable commercial product, which would relieve much of the economic trouble they have gotten themselves into.
On another note, I have emailed the “ethics in journalism” professor at my old university a couple of times, asking what has happened to the objectivity in journalism education I had received and why it has apparently changed so much. To date there has been no answer.
Newspapers are failing because they’ve lost touch with their readers. THEY SHOULD NOT BE BAILED OUT FOR STUPIDITY.
If McDonald’s switched to ONLY selling PC seaweed burgers - and lost 90% of their business, they WOULD NOT deserve a bail out either.
Environmentally conscious publications should just go away since they kill millions of defenseless trees and are responsible for such a large carbon footprint...
Why, if they were bailed out by the government, they would be MUCH less inclined to take the governments position.
When journalists have contempt for their readers, they fail. It's how it works in EVERY business.
You know what?
I am for this.
Why shouldn’t it really genuinely be a State Run Propaganda arm?
Then it would be plain to see for even the most idiotic.
Yep. Our local paper even admits it is in the bag for the Democrats. Their editorial staff says they are “progressive”. They finally just quit allowing almost everything I post. I guess I finally annoyed them with the truth.
And with government bailout, tax breaks, whatever comes strings attached. That is, “you will only report stuff favorable to the current administration.”

You might want to give credit to the artist !
Who said I made it?
That’s the address of the website hosting the pic and nothing else.
Only panty waisted liberals steal from others and claim it's theirs.
To preserve journalism or to only preserve LIBERAL journalism. I would love to have them write a check to Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh, and all of the others who “write” about news and culture. Of course, that is not what will happen, just like the fairness doctrine, if ever enacted, will not affect the liberal news media, no matter what the format.

Like those whack-jobs at Indy Media? Yeah, that’ll work!!
Apart from the ad hominem you have not proved that I stole anything. Only that I have hosted a copy of an altered, derivative image on my personal photobucket album.
I have never claimed ownership. There is no commercial use. If I were to receive some sort of cease-and-desist from the original artist I certainly would.
This derivative work is also clearly in the category of "satire" which is protected speech as I understand it so whether or not I would legally have to withdraw it is in a grey area of legal copyright issues IIRC. IANAL but I care about such things as I have been a creative artist my whole life..
If you are the allegedly "damaged" artist then say so and file a complaint openly. If you are a disgruntled friend say so and ask your friend to file a complaint openly.
If you are merely a troll who doesn't like the message then tough. You are part of the sewage.
Any wagers on who gets to decide what's "innovative?"
