Now taxpayers are bailing out bus industry
One News Now ^ | 10/20/09 | Jim Brown, One News Now

An energy analyst is outraged that taxpayer dollars are being used for a bailout of the bus industry that's comparable to the now defunct "cash for clunkers" program.

National Journal reports the Transportation Department's Transit Investments for Greenhouse Gas and Energy Reduction (TIGGER) program has spent nearly half its $100-million grant budget to replace diesel buses with hybrid-electric and fully electric models.

The "TIGGER" grants are part of President Obama's $787 billion stimulus program and are designed to serve two purposes: stimulate the economy and clean the environment.

Seems like buses powered by compressed natural gas (CNG) would have been a much better idea. A lot of energy is lost in the transmission of electricity over power lines, so it takes more natural gas to run a battery-powered bus than it takes to just run the bus’ diesel engine on CNG. This is the same problem with battery-powered cars—a lot of energy lost in power line transmission. This is probably pork for some obscure company that makes electric buses located in some key congeressman’s district. It’s a joke really; there’s not doubt the operating costs of a CNG-powered bus are much lower than an electric or hybrid-electric bus.

Where the hell does Obama figure all this money is going to come from? Bail out this, bail out that … just printing money will not pay the bulldog. Is his ultimate goal to make the late great America a banana republic? If so, he is well on his way in achieving his goal.

Unlike most countries that have found themselves under these circumstances, most Americans are very rebellious and jealous of their rights and are armed.

Beware Obama, be very aware.

IMHO

The pork spending never ends until a man like Reagan shows up in Washington and pulls the plug on the flow of money into the pork mill and vetos some budget bills.

NEGATIVE, NEGATIVE, NEGATIVE!

The pork spending ends when real patriots show up in Washington D.C. with pitchforks, tar and feathers, and rope!

Perhaps I should rephrase:

Instead of “Beware Obama, be very aware” I should have said “Beware Obama administration”

Don’t want the feds at my door. ;-)

Common Sense takes a back seat to Good Intentions in the ObamaNation.

It also takes a back seat to the Constitution, but half the population is too Ignorant or too Stupid to notice or care.

But CNG vehicles don’t have regenerative braking.

I’d be curious to see some data on how close the regenerative braking gets you to a CNG vehicle in overall efficiency.

I don’t know...it could be close. But when you add in the extra maintenance costs on the hybrid drivetrain, I have no doubt the CNG bus has lower total operating costs.

Buggy Whips!

Bail out the Buggy Whip manufacturers! They’ve been hit so hard since horse powered travel fell due to the Great Recession.
