7 AM - Meet at World Financial Center Plaza (if you want to meet up, please freepmail me) 8 AM - 21 Gun Salute
SALUTE TO NEW YORK CITY AND NEW YORK STATE...
At approximately 8:00 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 2, the yet-to-be commissioned ship will come to a halt in the Hudson River. There, opposite the former World Trade Center site, USS NEW YORK (LPD-21) will dip her colors, fire a 21-gun salute to the people of her namesake city and state, and proceed to Pier 88 to be formally inducted into the Fleet five days later at a shipboard ceremony.
At the Monday-morning event, members of the Fire Department of New York, the New York Police Department, the NY/NJ Port Authority Police, members of 9/11 victims' families and military service veterans will gather onshore at New Yorks World Financial Center to return the salute. The public is invited to attend the On-Shore Salute
What? Guns? In New York?
I got teary-eyed looking at this ship. Will do my best to get there.

Steel from the World Trade Center is poured for construction of USS New York
Nothing big. She's a support ship, an amphibious transport dock ship LPD-21, not a "real", warship. But she is armed. She has 7.5 tons of steel from the World Trade Center in her bow stem.
From this:

doing this

Resulting in this:

Her armament consists of Two 30 mm Close-in-Guns, for surface threat defense; two Rolling Airframe Missile launchers for air defense. Now a 21 gun salute from the CIGs accompanied perhaps by the very similar guns of the 14 Marine Corps Expeditionary Fighting Vehicles she carries, could be "interesting".
Her motto:
Lol - You took the words out of my mouth, or keyboard.
Ping

"It is an honor to be associated with the ship. We are all looking forward to sailing her to New York City for Commissioning", Commanding Officer F. Curt Jones said. I have members of my crew that joined the Navy as a direct result of 9/11. I have crew members that have lost family members on 9/11. I have met numerous people as a result of being associated with the ship that lost family, friends so we know that the steel that is part of the ship represents in some fashion those people. It represents loss but for us it also represents hope and we keep both of those things close to us", he added.
She’s a beauty....from what I’ve seen so far on FOX. Very, very proud. :)
They should build the new Trade Center to resemble the two towers on this ship.
BTW: were those guys on that small boat coming over to check you out? :)

Great story and pictures..GO NAVY...
Thanks for posting. Beautiful pics!
Several links to recent related posts on the CityBlog.
Lots of room for Marines and their equipment. Large well deck, plenty of room for helos and the Osprey...and well defended.

Good, now go shot the $jit out’a the Saudi’s, drag the steel home and build the Towers back ‘xactly how they were.
I would have given my eye teeth to be in the first battalion picked for MEU aboard that ship.
Get Some Navy!
and
Semper Fi
GORGEOUS!! STUNNING!! AMERICA’S BEST and BRIGHTEST will serve on HER!! May GOD BLESS and KEEP HER SAFE AND STURDY!!
It’s a national disgrace that we have not:
1) Built the towers back, or some form of them, even better.
2) Established a patriotic national monument at the crash site of Flight 93.
The best thing you can do is the "water off the duck" response, to confound your enemies.
Do everything you can to show that they have no effect of influence.
We can do it, esp. if we get rid of the enemies w/in.
My pals can help, they have a company called "Disappearing , Inc."
Don’t underestimate the government’s ability to f*ck this up in some way. They’ll probably have a Muslim chaplin give the invocation.

Fair winds, following seas.
Lead the charge!
BTTT
Gives me “goosebumps” to see her, knowing what she is built
from! Great post, Star!
The fact is, they did have an effect. A lot of people are dead and not coming back.
When someone kills 3,000 of your citizens, the best thing you cand od is go back and kill the bastards until they want no more, like we did in World War II. We showed how to defeat fanatics then...and we need to apply the same today...and not just to the Al Quida and terrorist cells and organization...but to every population center (be it town, city, or nation) that supports them. BUt I agree that the towers need to be put back up. As I say, IMHO, it is a national disgrace that they are not already long since back there.
I view this commissioning of the USS New York with pride and I’ll have to admit, some sadness.
The commissioning is of course a time for celebration. Containing materials from the 09/11 site, who wouldn’t be proud of this moment.
Where my pride turns to sorrow, is the realization that this commissioning may lead folks to think our nation is maintaining it’s military infrastructure. I do not believe that to be the case. Under Carter and Clinton the military was ravaged. Nobody will be able to convince me that Obama will not make those ravaging days look tame in comparison to his.
I fear for the future of our nation. So while I am happy to see the USS New York commissioned, it doesn’t fool me one bit about the reality that is.
IMO, you don’t just return the towers. You build something twice as big to teach the aggressor a lesson.
We should put something half a mile high on that spot. As you said, it should be done by now.
The kicker at this moment in time is that our economy probably wouldn’t support it. Much of it would remain vacant like other properties that currently exist.
The designs I have seen so far are just pathetic.
Please, just build two square buildings one half mile high.
As far as killing them, come on, have you ever gottin' rid of every roach?
As Cher said "..at the end of the world there will be just me and a couple of roaches..."
To illustrate the point see;
La bataille d'Alger [videorecording (DVD)] = The battle of Algiers
“...just me and a couple of roaches...”
Isn’t that a double negative or something like that... LOL.
I’d prefer either 2 more RAM launchers or 2 CWIS systems. And weren’t these supposed to have 16 or 32 Mk41 VLS tubes?
Brooklyn Navy Yard built 1/5 of all US naval ships from 1801 until the 1950s. This included 2 of the Iowa class Battleships, you know the ones with 3x3 16/50 cannons?
They have the space allocated for VLS ESSM, but they have not been added, just allowed for so they can add them later if necessary.
Never forget!!!
*sniff*
She’s beautiful!
rust never sleeps...
My daughter is an officer on this ship, I get to come to the commissioning, I am so looking forward to it and seeing her.
outstanding! let’s invade iran with it. i’d love to see the captain of that ship radio a message on broad spectrum, “hey weasels, here’s the world trade center coming to kick your ass!”
