Thomas Jones and Rob Gibson are acutely aware that they are setting themselves up for a barrage of "nature versus nurture" jokes whenever they tell people their son is a budding ballet prodigy.
So be it, though. Their adopted offspring, James Gibson-Jones, appears destined for some species of ballet greatness, having been snapped up by the National Ballet of Canada this fall after just two years of lessons.
He began dabbling in dance at the urging of teachers and family friends in Bowmanville, who sensed an affinity for rhythm and performance in the charismatic 11-year-old with the "classic Billy Elliot build."
Gibson, for one, knows it's going to raise eyebrows, bringing up the (pink) elephant in the room actually a typical suburban backyard fraught with excitable golden retrievers unprompted and in good humour.
"That was the first thing that I thought of," he chuckles. "Here are the two gay men and their son, the dancer. There are those stereotypes: `We're recruiting.' `Only gay men dance.' Things like that. I just find that incredibly funny. We didn't even push him in dance. We were thinking gymnastics because he was so flexible."
"Nobody's actually brought it up," shrugs Jones. "But if it happens, it happens. So be it."

Forgive my asking, but what is the “classic Billy Elliot build”??????????
Maybe. But not all male ballet dancers are gay or sexually promiscuous. My daughter danced for 7 years here in NYC and made many friends with many guys at the ballet school and in the company who are heterosexual.
And there are so many heterosexual male gymnasts.
Okay, I thought that inseminating feces was how politicians were made. I might have to revisit that line of thought.
The only way they can reproduce their kind is to adopt, or arrange some kind of surrogacy. This story reads like a parody.
There’s these two gay guys who adopted a baby boy and, you know what, that baby boy grew up to be a ballet dancer.
This is a story out of The Onion, right?
It sounds too funny.
I wonder if he grew up with all kinds of weird vaseline practices?
“Do you have a link providing proof to your comment?”
I don’t need the media to instruct me on common sense.
Two gays gay up their son....so people didn’t expect this?
A coach a high school boy who has two dads. He’s one of the toughest, wide-shouldered boys on the team. While he’s soft spoken and respectful, I would take him to a brawl on my side any day.
This is an anecdotal form of evidence against same sex adoption. There are a certain number of boys that will be drawn to these things, for whatever reason.
I do not necessarily advocate adoption by these families. I’m just saying that this story is proof of nothing.
I think the more compelling case against adoption by a particular group is the statistics (if they exist) of abuse (sexual or physical) by the group compared to others.
“This is a story out of The Onion, right?”
LOL, that’s exactly what I thought too. It boggles the mind. In this case, truth is stranger than fiction.
I agree that there are plenty of problems with allowing same-sex “couples” to adopt/raise children. I also agree that the adopted children of these “couples” may be more likely to be involved in things like dance/theater (if a child is surrounded by artsy sort of stuff growing up, then that child is more likely to want to be involved in artsy stuff). But let’s not jump to any conclusions here - there are plenty of straight male ballet dancers, so simply because the kid is into ballet does NOT mean he’s gay.
Rahm Emanuel was a ballerina and he’s a Marxist leg breaker.
I had a friend that was going to NYC to be a dancer. He was upset one night because a man had propositioned him. He was aghast. I told him that he was in for a long, hard road if that bothered him.
That’s only if you believe that sexual orientation is genetic and there is no evidence of that. Debauchery is part of human nature. Some people just surrender to it.
You said there were studies and I asked for a link...
what’s up with the people characterizing ballet dancing as “depraved” or “homosexual” behavior? ballet and opera are two of the most conservative and beautiful forms of art in our society.
“Rahm Emanuel was a ballerina and he’s a Marxist leg breaker.”
Rahm Emanuel is a little faggot who would get the shit beat out of him by 90% of the adult male population in America in a one-on-one fight. Please don’t elevate these vermin to levels of prestige, accomplishment or capability that they do not deserve. He’s a faggot.
Your post is much too reasonable for this thread.
So true
I am not a fan and I probably would be able to take him, if in a fight...why the foul language? This isn’t DU or HuffPo, just saying, FRiend.
People who choose to enter the entertainment and performing arts often have an external worth locus...they derive feelings of self-worth based upon the input of others. This narsissic navel-gazing is a similar trait with homosexuals...it may start out with an introduction/indoctrination at the hands of someone older but the lifestyle grows to encompass everything that they are.
If you live around anything, you are going to be more comefotable with it. Generally, the group claims that "one in ten humans is homosexual." That's it, that's all. This comes from a discredited Kinsey Report factum that evaluated those studied as homosexual if they had ever, even once even THOUGHT about same-sex, even if in a dream. This is spun to "one in ten" and the facts of the tainted information are forgotten. If this was really true, then only one in ten kids of gay parents would be gay...but we now know the ration is FAR higher.
When discussing people like Rahm Emmanuel, Barack Obama, Nancy Pelosi and David Axelrod, using aggressive and foul language seems the be the only way to accurately describe them, as the more civil approach falls short. Thus, my request for poetic license.
I never bought the “heredity” argument for homosexuality. If it ever were genetic, by it’s very nature it would have been difficult to pass down to successive generations. Eventually that queer gene would disappear from the gene pool.
A round rump and graspable hips???
What is the answer? No male ballet dancers? Do we shun them as a society? Is the artform dead?
“I do not necessarily advocate adoption by these families. Im just saying that this story is proof of nothing.”
I would agree. While I don’t like it myself, I see nothing wrong and shameful in wanting to dance and don’t see how that reflects on the kids sexuality in anyway. It may well be that those people turned him gay but it may well be that he just wanted to dance. A lot of hetero kids who are tough enough to ignore stigmas like to do it too.
Wow, is that an original?
Oh my.
Yes - seems he is destined to be a Presidential Chief-of-Staff.
“A coach a high school boy who has two dads”
Not possible. Perhaps you need to retake Biology.
Mrs WBill has known them all through college. She says that they all (independently) went through a "phase" where they'd introduce themselves as gay. As in "Hello, I'm (blah) and I'm gay."
So, what you say makes perfect sense. Even if it's in-your-face and annoying.
And, FWIW....I'm sitting on the outside looking in, so I'm pretty detached from the situations. All of the gay men that I know well enough to know their families....have (or had) REAL problems at home. Absent father. Ugly divorces. Drug abuse. Sex abuse. Families that - for lack of a better word - are just "screwed up". Strikes me as an interesting trend that no one wants to comment on.
Also, FWIW, about 3/4 of Mrs WBill's friends seem to be pretty well adjusted guys. Their attitude is just "OK, I'm gay. If you don't like it, that's your problem, not mine." Which is okey-dokey with me, none of my business anyway.
The rest of them are, again for lack of better word, flaming queer attention whores. The kind that FR occasionally pokes at in Gay-Day parades. All of them are cross-dressers of some sort. All of them engage in every negative gay stereotype - the promiscuous sex, drug use, etc etc etc.
My personal theory is that "Gay Culture" is the single one that will accept that "HEY LOOK AT ME" behavior (how many guys that you know dress in women's clothes to go to a football game? Yeah, me either.). So, "being gay" is the one thing where they can get acceptance, while maintaining the most "outrageous" and attention-getting lifestyle possible.
I think that if there was another lifestyle that would garner them more attention, while not losing them any social status, then they'd be all over it.
Just my unsolicited $0.02.
look at Rahm Emmanuel and how he turned out, he used to dance but now he’s the head nutcrackerfor the bamster, steak knife-in-hand-stabber-in-chief and still living in one of his co-worker’s basement apts to save money!!
Yep. “Look at me, look at me, look at MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!”
Ahem.....my older brother is gay. He never could throw a baseball.
you should put Ron Reagan up with those since he was with the Joffrey Ballet.
When you think about it rugby is more homoerotic than dancing too. Sweaty men piling up on top of each other.
