Former US president Jimmy Carter will head to Asia next month to lead thousands of volunteers building homes for the poor in five nations along the Mekong River, a humanitarian group said on Tuesday.
The volunteers for Habitat for Humanity will build or repair 166 homes in Cambodia, China, Laos, Thailand and Vietnam on the November 15-20 tour, the Atlanta-based Christian group said.
"In an area of the world where many people live in deplorable conditions, we have a chance to help families improve their housing," the 85-year-old former president said in a statement.
The project will start in Thailand's Chiang Mai province where Carter, his wife Rosalynn and others will join local families in building 82 homes - a number picked to honour King Bhumibol Adulyadej's 82nd birthday on December 5.
The Carters will then help build houses in villages near the Vietnamese and Cambodian capitals, Hanoi and Phnom Penh, and take part in the construction of multi-story housing for hundreds of families in the southwestern Chinese province of Sichuan.
Habitat for Humanity volunteers will also refurbish homes in Laos but the Carters will not take part in that leg of the trip, said Katie Evans, a spokeswoman for the group.
The Carters have devoted one week annually for the past 25 years to the Habitat for Humanity projects to help low-income people in the United States and abroad build and own their own homes.
Carter, who lost his bid for re-election in 1980, has also devoted his post-presidency to mediating conflicts and promoting human rights and democracy, an effort that won him the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002.
Good. Maybe he’ll stay there. In some remote regions far from the press.
I’m not holding my breath.
Make sure your “good works” get publicized, born-again Jimmy.
“And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full.”
Good for him!....Maybe he’ll wander off into the jungle and get lost.....
I can’t believe I was going to post the exact words. You beat me to it.
When Carter finally croaks, it will be like an alcoholic parent dying - sad in its own way, but you'll feel relief you no longer have to be embarrassed by him.
Thailand?
I think Obama rather than Carter will be the first president to be embalmed...
America is experiencing the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression and he thinks the building some homes in Asia is going to make a difference to Asia? 166 homes in Cambodia, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam and China? Has he looked at the map and seen the size of those countries?
Why doesn’t he help the communities around Atlanta that were damaged with flooding a few weeks back? Those are close to the Carter Center.
Oh, that’s right. He’s out to make a political point. He really isn’t into true Christian charity.
Shouldn’t you be working?
Oh yeah, you’re at home. I’m at work.
Okay ... bye now.
Hmmm. Perhaps he’ll stay in Asia? Mizz Lillian liked it there.
All this because the housing crisis in America has been SOLVED.
the radioactive wall board will be cheap
I’ll build him house over there myself if he’ll promise not to ever come back.

Maybe he can learn to build yurts.................
Don’t let the door hit ya where the good Lord split ya, Jimmy.
next he will build one for bambi’s bro in africa
That should go quickly, mud and straw huts go up fast.
At least he will be out of this country.
Yes, dear. I’ll go back to work.
Cursing at the puppy.
Doing laundry.
Kissing children.
Driving them to dance.
Going to the drugstore.
Going to the grocery.
Starting supper.
Picking up the dancer.
Waiting for you.
Please tell me he is moving into one of them!
Have you seen how some people live in Mississippi and Alabama? Why don't you help Americans, Mr. Carter? Oh, I forgot: we are filthy rich capitalists, right?
Maybe Phuket? Based on what I have seen there are a few bars that need some work.
My first thought - KEEP HIM! He’s not going to be building those homes anyway, except for the photo-op.
Sorry Jimmy, but compared to 30+ years ago when you last had a clue - it turns out the Asians are the ones with the money now.
An average, 900 square foot apt, in downtown Asian cities, ranges from $75,000 in Saigon to $300,000 in Shanghai to $500,000 in Tokyo.
In Columbus, Georgia we had a nice little scandal about a Habitat for Humanity house. It seems that after the dedication of the house and the woman owner moving in a $40K SUV was parked outside. When asked about the expensive vehicle the owner said, “Oh that is not my car...that belongs to my (sleepover) boyfriend.”
So here we see a problem. The woman is deemed worthy of H for H charity but only because she is a single mom. Her BF could support her handsomely but where is the incentive?
No matter where they operate from Atlanta to Hounduras, Habitat houses do not make sense as charity. The donated-labor nail drivers are competing against honest home builders trying to make a living and supporting a lottery winner approach to those who score the rare Habitat house.
Good, perhaps he’ll move into one ?
I hope he builds one for himself!
And take away his cell phones, satellite phones, portable PCs and any other communication devices that might operate in that part of the world.
yep, Thailand it is.....Louisiana wasn’t good enough, not enough deprivation , i mean it was only one little ole’ hurricane...plus there’s not enough heartache to make good press there either, people look hungrier in Thailand /sarc
Please, please, please let him move there and live for the rest of his life.
I hope he has many happy years there, far from microphones and cameras.
