McDonald's Posts Strong Profit, Predicts Solid Sales
Reuters ^ | October 22, 2009 | N/A

McDonald's posted a stronger-than-expected quarterly profit on Thursday, helped by cost controls and rising sales in all regions, and expects same-store sales to remain positive in October even though people eat out less often.

Shares of the world's largest hamburger chain rose 2 percent in premarket trading.

McDonald's [MCD 58.33 --- UNCH ] and some other fast-food chains have been outperforming other restaurant companies due to their lower-priced fare, but rising unemployment is erasing that advantage.

McDonald's third-quarter net income rose to $1.26 billion, or $1.15 a share, from $1.19 billion, or $1.05 a share, a year earlier.

Analysts on average expected the company to earn $1.11 per share, according to Thomson Reuters.

Makes sense. McD's and BK are now pretty much the only thing we do now when we "eat out".

I guess I’m old fashioned. When I was a kid, McDonald’s was a special treat.

What happened to the home cooked meal?

Uh-oh...they used that evil “P” word. They will be shown as the monsters they are now because they made a bigger than expected profit this quarter!

Indeed. I was just telling my kids that last night.

Having a 12 oz glass-bottled Coke all to yourself was also a bit special.

Going to Steak n’ Shake meant you had died and gone to heaven.

McD improved their menu over the past 2 years or so. IMHO, the new third-pounder burgers are quite good, and I'd rate their chicken sandwiches as matching Chick Fil-A as the best in fast food. (I have a fast food lunch pretty much every work day. I cycle among McD, Burger King, Wendys and Arby’s.)

What part of the cow is the angus?

You can’t buy steak at Steak and Shake because there is no ham in hamburgers.

The angus provides the indigestion.

“My friends have a two year old daughter that can spot golden arches blocks away.”

And that’s after the McDonaldland character TV commercials have been off the air under Federal pressure for more than 15 yrs.

Trying to suppress a child’s love of Mickey D’s seems almost as futile as the Soviet attempt to suppress religion.

Very few 20somethings and other singles can actually cook. Invest in McDonalds, because they gotta eat and they are broke.

I think it would be cheaper to have a home cooked meal than eating fried fast food. Not only that but it’s healthier.

When I was young, it was required that we all came at sat at the dinner table. My folks never allowed eating in front of the tube or “save it for me later I’m going to Timmy’s house.”
