Ole Miss seeks to silence 'rising South' chant

JACKSON, Miss. -The University of Mississippi has shortened one of its fight songs to discourage football fans from chanting "the South will rise again" during part of the tune, which critics say is an offensive reminder of the region's intolerant past. However, some fans have continued to recite the chant at the end of the song, "From Dixie With Love," despite the change made last week at the chancellor's request. The Ole Miss band performs the medley before and after games. Earlier this month, the Ole Miss student government passed a resolution suggesting the chant be replaced by the phrase, "To hell with LSU."

More on campus political correctness. I dont guess there is any school that is immune to this disease. George Orwell would be proud, thought and mind control are ruling the day.

Talk about PC, what about the "other" famous Ole Miss chant; the one that begins "Hitey, hitey, Christ Almighty..."

Thanks, dorks. The more you repress, the more we express. I don’t suppose even ten of the people involved in bringing about this exciting, and oh so socially just change, have ever attended a whole football game anywhere or have a clue about the way it is in the real America.

As a born Southerner, grown-up Yankee, this is PC crap. I may or may not believe in “The Cause”, but I do believe it is the heritage of many Southerners and as such should be theirs to embrace or reject.

Not imposed on them by the authorities that be.

Much of the secession movement was characterized by violence intimidation and political dirty tricks. According to the respected historian David Potter:

"At no time during the winter of 1860-1861 was secession desired by a majority of the people of the slave states..."

I am sure they’ll roll over just like everybody else rolls over and the liberals will pat themselves on the back and think they are making some big statement for social justice. What it reallyh shows is the continued cravenness of our society in that everybody rolls over when the professionally offended say boo.

I am real impressed by the president of netscape’s opinion. “Oh so you have a lot of money so you can dictate behavior to the rest of us.” Well, screw you too, although he’ll never read this.

I was born in the Conch Republic. You can’t be born any further south. Grew up in 7 other states while Master Chief Duntno was kicking the snot out of American enemies in the Pacific in WWll, Korea and the start of SE Asia...I was born and raised in the United States Navy by Sailors and Marines, and they were from all over and in the service of this country and I’ll tell you what...you can sing Dixie at the top of your lungs and god bless you if you love America...and everyone who thinks any different doesn’t get how America was grown and they should STFU and live and let live...it’s called FREEDOM...and those boys that fought and died in the service of their country, North or South, get every bit of my respect, regardless of their flag...and that respect does not fade with time or new ideas about what’s correct...freedom is freedom of speech and unless you’re yelling fire in church and there ain’t one, bring it on...

Nor did any southern state want Lincoln as president.

You do realize most people in America during the start of the revolutionary war opposed leaving England, right?

sigh...college life just can’t be as fun as it used to be. I know I’m showing my age...in my day we sorority girls dressed for the games and then for the parties afterword; we slipped alcohol into the games in svelte silver canteens; the KAs still ran around in their confederate uniforms...

Thank God for the South!

We are on a three week vacation through the South and I can personally attest that everyone in America should visit this wonderful area of the United States of America.

Kindness, tolerance, consideration, kindness, manners and love prevail for all. American Flags Proudly fly everywhere. Children say yes ma'am, no sir, thank you and your welcome. Adults hold open doors for the ladies, men walk on the outside of the street to protect their women and everyone loves their hunting, their fishing, their baking, their quilting, their dogs, their friends, strangers and their Churches.

When God made America he truly gave an extra blessing to the South!

For People who don't know what "The Bonnie Blue Flag" lyrics are, here is a sample.

The Bonnie Blue Flag
We are a band of brothers
And native to the soil,
Fighting for the property
We gained by honest toil;
And when our rights were threatened,
The cry rose near and far--
"Hurrah for the Bonnie Blue Flag
That bears a single star!"

CHORUS: Hurrah! Hurrah!
For Southern rights hurrah!
Hurrah for the Bonnie Blue Flag
That bears a single star.

As long as the Union
Was faithful to her trust,
Like friends and like brothers
Both kind were we and just;
But now, when Northern treachery
Attempts our rights to mar,
We hoist on high the Bonnie Blue Flag
That bears a single star.

CHORUS: Hurrah! Hurrah!
For Southern rights hurrah!
Hurrah for the Bonnie Blue Flag
That bears a single star.

Gee, imagine an institution in the deep south referring to the “rising South.” I’m shocked!
This is an attempt to “purge” and “reinvent” history. Whether someone likes or dislikes the past, it is dangerous to toy with it. It is also an attempt to shame anyone or any movement that would seek to rebel against the federal government. I would think that members of FR would be the first to see what is behind all this. It’s not about singing “Dixie,” but it is about the fear of states or of citizens to rebel even against a repressive or tyrannical government. I’ve seen some posters on this board that believe that it is always wrong to revolt or to rebel against the federal government or Union. That is a very dangerous philosophical position.

Once "Dixie" was a standard at many SEC schools, but it fell out of favor (especially at UGA in the late 60s) in the wake of political correctness.

My wife, older daughter and I moved to Texas in 1977. In 1978 a new high school stadium was finished and used for the city's Fourth of July Celebration. We were overwhelmed by the intensity of the Crowd when the band played Dixie. Not that they were any less enthusiastice about the "Star Spangled Banner", but there were definitely really UP for Dixie.

Years later when that daughter was in band in another Texas district, we went to Tyler (or was it Longview? no matter) for a band competion. Most of the bands were "beyond" military type marches. But one played The Aggie Fight Song and Dixie, as well as marching to that cadence rather than the more modern non-military one. The Crowd again went wild for Dixie. That would have been around '91 or '92. PC had not reached East Texas as of that date.

Marse Robert is Asleep!

Had you heard the distant tramping
On that glowing Summer day!
Had you seen our comrades running
To meet us on the way!
Oh! the wondrous, sudden silence,
Th’ unmilitary creep,
As down the line that caution ran,
“Marse Robert is asleep!”

Give me your hand, Old Blue Coat,
Let’s talk of this awhile,
For the prettiest march of all the war
Was this of rank and file!”
Was the passing of that army,
When ‘twas hard, I ween, to keep
Those men from crying out, “Hurrah!
Marse Robert is asleep!”

There lay that knightly figure,
One hand upon his sword,
The other pressed above his heart,
A vow without a word!
Two laurel leaves had flutter’d down,
For flowers their vigils keep,
And crown’d him, though, I think, they knew
“Marse Robert was asleep!”

In glorious Old Westminster,
No monument of war,
No marble story, half so grand
As this, our army saw!
Our leafy Old Westminster
Virginia’s woods — now keep
Immortal that low whisper,
“Marse Robert is asleep!”

As we clasp hands, Old Blue Coat,
List, Brother of the North,
Had Foreign foe assail’d your homes
You then had known his worth!
Unbroken vigil o’er those homes
It had been his to keep:
Step lightly o’er the border then,
“Marse Robert is asleep!”

He’s yours and mine, is Robert Lee,
He’s yours and mine, Hurrah!
These tears you shed have seal’d the past,
And closed the wounds of war!
Thus clasping hands, Old Blue Coat,
We’ll swear by th’ tears you weep,
The sounds of war shall be muffled —
“Marse Robert is asleep!”

Richmond, Va., May, 1880
