Newt Gingrich pushes back on N.Y. endorsement (Newt Triples Down on Scozzafava)
AJC ^ | 10/22/09 | Jim Galloway

Former U.S. House speaker Newt Gingrich is taking real heat over his endorsement of a moderate Republican, Dede Sozzafava, in a special congressional election in upstate New York.

David Keating, executive director of Club for Growth, has taken to a third-party conservative, Doug Hoffman, and rakes Gingrich on the anti-tax group’s web site:

“Gingrich does this all the time,” said Keating. “He does whatever the party committee asks him to. He likes to cultivate this image of being an innovator (snip)

But this afternoon, on his own web site, the former Georgia congressman pushed back:

The choice in New York is a practical one: We can split the conservative vote and guarantee the election of a Democrat in a Republican seat in a substantial loss of opportunity. Or we can find a way to elect someone who has committed to vote for the Republican leader, has committed to vote against all tax increases, has committed to vote against cap-and-trade, and is a strong ally of the NRA.

In order to stop President Obama and the Democrats in Congress, I would rather see Christie win in New Jersey, Bob McDonnell win in Virginia, and have the Republican, Dede Scozzafava, win the special election in NY-23 so that election night in 2009 is a devastating defeat for the Democrats.

My number one interest is to build a Republican majority. If your interest is taking power back from the Left, and your interest is winning the necessary elections, then there are times when you have to put together a coalition that has disagreement within it.

We have to decide which business we are in. If we are in the business about feeling good about ourselves while our country gets crushed then I probably made the wrong decision.

This election will be the official divide between the RNC lackeys and the committed conservatives. We’ll learn a lot about a number of people in the next couple weeks...

The DEMOCRAT is more conservative than the Republican.

His endorsement will prove just how irrelevant he and the GOP is... Sarah is endorsing Hoffman.

Stick it Newt.

I suppose he must realize that if Hoffman wins this race he’s worse than done. He’s a laughingstock.

He is supporting the dumb local chairs who picked a flaming liberal? Why? I’ve seen the candidate. I know they were not sleeping with her.

Gingrich is rapidly proving himself to be a blithering idiot, in addition to his previous role as an anal orifice.

And if Hoffman loses because the RNC and Newt supported the liberal RINO and siphoned enough votes to allow the Dem Owens to win, he’s going to have hell to pay.

Newt has become a detriment to conservatism.

Sorry, Newt. Party means nothing to me. Principle is what matters.

I have no use for liberal RINOs. We may as well just have more Obama lackeys. They both bring us down the same road, just at different speeds.

I’m so happy to see Sarah willing to step out on principle and take a stand against the GOP party machine. She is our last, best hope.

We,ve been B.S.ed by liberal one worlder republicans for many years now. I do not know what the answer is at this point but I am tending to believe that electing rinos is certainly not the answer.

“We can split the conservative vote and guarantee the election of a Democrat”

Hey Newt, the conservatives are supporting Hoffman. There is no split. RINO’s are supporting Dede. Hoffman is coming on full speed and hopefully will overtake all of them.

Newt is as faithful to conservatism today as he once was to his first two wives.

If Scuzzball loses and Huffman wins, Gingrich is finished. And deservedly so. Party over country? We don't buy that shit here in the red zone. That slime is for 'rat crap, not Americans.

Sorry Newt, used to love ya. Hasta la byebye.
