Authorities hoped to enlist the aid of a UPS manager in intercepting a package of marijuana. Instead, investigators say, the manager took matters into her own hands.
Rather than let police know a package in her store contained suspected drugs, Anna K. Wright of Atlanta is accused of stealing the pot, selling it, and then lying about what she did.
According to the U.S. District Attorney's Office, Wright, 33, was alerted that a package could arrive for a particular mail box. When it did, authorities wanted Wright to contact them.
A package did arrive. But Wright apparently decided to take the package, which contained several pounds of marijuana. She then sold it for profit, according to the charges.
Not only did this defendant abuse her position as a UPS Store manager by stealing a package, she then distributed marijuana found in the package and lied to the federal agents. said U.S. Attorney Sally Quillian Yates.

If the police already know the package is coming it seems really stupid to think you can get away with stealing it. Like they're not going to wonder what happened to it.

Talk about stepping on somebody else's turf! The authorities were going to turn a tidy profit with that interception.

Mail drop places use a street address with a number for the rented box.

UPS stores all have boxes you can rent. You use their address for the location and then the box number looks like you have an office location. They advertise them here — they are also cheaper then the post office.

Just good old fashioned capitalism at work. No wonder the government is so upset.

I would think that anything she sold it for would be profit since she didn’t pay for it to begin with. She could have sold it for $10 and had a $10 profit.
What an idiot this woman is.

Can’t figure out if this broad works for the U.S. Postal Service or for U.P.S.! Very confusing...

The U.S. Postal Inspection Service is investigating the case. Yes... that's curious. Presuming that this happened entirely withing the UPS delivery system, I don't know how they get jurisdiction. It could very well be that the various private package services like UPS and FedEx have agreements with the USPS for such things. I don't know.
It's worth pointing out though, that the Postal Inspection Service is a no-nonsense bunch of folks. A very capable investigative branch.

As other posters described above, The UPS Store is NOT the same as UPS. It is a wholly owned mailing and small office support facility, formerly known as Mailboxes, Etc. When you rent a box there, it is a regular postal service address, good for receiving not only UPS, but US Mail, FedEx, DHL, Roadway Express, etc. The package in question was sent by U.S. Mail. Rather than have the postal inspectors seize it, the UPS Store could catch the patron on video retrieving the package. Given that, the story makes perfect sense.

UPS Stores have cameras as patrons have keys to get to the private mailboxes after hours. Unless she turned off the camera she is at least going to be seen accepting delivery. Then she has to explain what happened to the package.

Ah, yes of course. For some reason I was assuming it was a UPS package as well, not just a UPS Store mailbox. That makes perfect sense.
