WASHINGTON (AFP) – President Barack Obama has declared swine flu a "national emergency," the White House said Saturday, as the United States reels from millions of cases of infection and over 1,000 deaths.

I agree that a number of the reported work/school absences may indeed be just “colds” and not actual swine flu—they are not testing here, so could actually have a situation where there could be both under and over reporting.

I think because there is little immunity in the young, schools are recommending kids stay away—both in IL and MI, schools have been shut down taking “snow days” early just because so many absences, they wanted to allow the kids to get well, and to disinfect schools. We had one freshman pass away at our local high school who had diagnosed H1N1 flu btw, so tho there is lots of hype, there is also reason for exercising caution.

Regarding being contagious day before show symptoms, wonder if that is not typical of most flu. Just read today that they are saying may be contagious longer than a day or two after fever ends.

This flu season is a scam. I am not saying the flu is not dangerous. It normally kills 36,000 Americans/ year.

I agree it is a scam. I personally don't trust the governments numbers but even at that "millions" is plural so there must be at least 2,000,000 if not more cases with "over 1,000 deaths" probably means "around a thousand" or the higher number would have been cited. That comes out to a measly .0005%, hardly a pandemic.

A 5 yo girl died in the Austin TX area and it was attributed to H1N1 but stated further test were required to affirm and the results weren't back, at that time.

I don't know if the results were ever published.

I am glad this administration has so sullied its integrity that the American people in generals, and Freepers in particular, are alerted to these possible shenanigans.

That’s the thought that has been bugging me all day.

I still find it very odd that swine flu burst onto the scene at the exact time that BHO was visiting Mexico. Conspiracy? I don’t know, but I thought it was very odd at the time.

Obambi likes the face time on TV to much. Why did he do this behind closed doors on a Friday night? This type of anouncement is perfect for his personality. Gather all the TV cameras around and tell the country why he is doing this - because he is so concerned about his subjects! Fishy to me.
