Skip to comments.NPR analyst compares Obama to Nixon, issues full apology
Posted on 10/24/2009 10:00:02 AM PDT by JRochelle
It's pretty unremarkable to describe the Obama White House's growing enemies list -- the insurance companies, Chamber of Commerce, Fox News -- as "Nixonian." But there's one place where, if you venture such an opinion, you'd better be prepared to apologize -- quickly and profusely.
On National Public Radio's "Talk of the Nation" Wednesday, NPR political editor Ken Rudin said the White House campaign against Fox News is a bad idea. "It's not only aggressive, it's almost Nixonesque," Rudin said. "I mean, you think of what Nixon and Agnew did with their enemies list and their attacks on the media; certainly Vice President Agnew's constant denunciation of the media. Of course, then it was a conservative president denouncing a liberal media, and of course, a lot of good liberals said, 'Oh, that's ridiculous. That's an infringement on the freedom of press.' And now you see a lot of liberals almost kind of applauding what the White House is doing to Fox News, which I think is distressing."
It's not the usual thing you hear from NPR analysts. Reaction from the NPR audience was negative, and within 24 hours, Rudin was in backtrack mode. "I made a boneheaded mistake yesterday," Rudin wrote on his NPR blog. "Comparing the tactics of the Nixon administration -- which bugged and intimidated and harrassed journalists -- to that of the Obama administration was foolish, facile, ridiculous and, ultimately, embarrassing to me. I should have known better and, in fact, I do know better. I was around during the Nixon years. I am fully cognizant of what they did and attempted to do."
"I apologize for a dumb comparison."

Since when was Richard ‘We are all Keynesian now’ Nixon, a conservative? ‘Wage and price controls’? Anyone?
"Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find only things evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached." - Manuel II Palelogus
Apology UN accepted.
You were right the fist time, fool.
He issued an apology to Nixon?
Sounds like the NPR reporter is correct in his initial assessment since, obviously, he has now been forced to recant his opinion.
Well, unlike a lot of the so-called independent Media, NPR is beholden to the Feds. So when the Obama Administration barks, you can expect that the folks at NPR will cower and pee on the floor.
With boneheaded comparisons like that maybe he should just give up being a journalist.
Back on the porch for you Rudin!

That was Nixon that did that...right?
The Obama commie/chicago thug tactics just keep on working against the timid. Thank GOD Roger Ailes has the backbone to rise above the Rahm Emmanuel/Axelrod/Obama slime and intimadation.
"Ta-da! That's my boy!"

**** applause **** Take a bow!
This guy ripped off Charles Krauthammer. Charles used “Nixonian” on Special Report with Brett Bair early this past week.
You got that right JR. Nixon had a few problems, but he was basically a very effective and decisive president and a workaholic. Plus, his staff was composed of intelligent adults, not the crib full of crybabies we currently have.
Was that the same Milhous that promoted and signed the Environmental Protection (of Marxist policy) Act?
Or was he the one who allowed the Peacenik US Congress to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory for the South Vietnamese people by allowing the defunding of the critical war material support for the South Vietnamese government? That "conservative?"
His Borg implant must have malfunctioned.
Looking at what the dems have done to the presidency, Nixon was an amateur.
What could possibly terrify someone into backing away from the truth so fast?
Does this guy have a Polanski moment in his past?
Surprised he’s still working. He knows he’s supposed to say FOX is a shill for the RNC.
Pray for America
The power of the DNC muscle in the ranks of NPR shows through, that only Politically Correct, DemoLeft worshipers dare expect to get or keep keep their jobs at (DNC)NPR.
NPR is as it has been for as long as anyone can remember a partisan mouthpiece for the Left.
Pendulum swing...much too far.
OBAMA ENEMIES LIST SIMPLIFIED
Not on the Obama Enemies List:
Obama, Moochers and Parasites, Leftist Media, brain-dead democrats (redundancy alert!), Goldman Sachs, America hating muslims.
On the Obama Enemies List:
Portrait of a sociopath Thug as an ugly gay boy. Not that there is anything wrong with that!
- intimidated and harassed journalist Rudin explaining how he was right all along.
Dude is vicious, hateful and vindictive, nothing more. No excuse for it, I don't care what anyone says. Anger management wouldn't begin to touch this one.
The irony of his retraction is so sad.
Good Maoist style self denunciation. That should greatly shorten his stay in a re-education center.
For a self pat on the back.....back around April I predicted here that the big O would generate Nixonian comparisons before eoy because of his paranoia and ‘enemies’.
“Or was he the one who allowed the Peacenik US Congress to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory for the South Vietnamese people by allowing the defunding of the critical war material support for the South Vietnamese government? That “conservative?”
I’m not going to get into defending Nixon but you can’t blame him for everything.
Exit of the Americans: 19731975
“Gerald Ford took over as U.S. president on 9 August 1974 after President Nixon resigned due to the Watergate scandal. At this time, Congress cut financial aid to South Vietnam from $1 billion a year to $700 million. The U.S. midterm elections in 1974 brought in a new Congress dominated by Democrats who were even more determined to confront the president on the war. Congress immediately voted in restrictions on funding and military activities to be phased in through 1975 and to culminate in a total cutoff of funding in 1976.
It was also Nixon that put the last nail in the coffin of the gold standard.
I used to have a monthly payroll deduction to support my local public radio station. I made a special trip in to the payroll office and cancelled the contribution, and haven't donated a nickel since, on the day after the 1992 election. I almost drove off the road when I heard the NPR newsroom burst in raucus cheering when it was announced that Clinton had won. They haven't improved one bit since.
Repressed homosexuals are often hateful raving paranoid monsters.
And so it is with Rahm.
...makes Freddie look macho...........
I almost thought I had ‘misremembered’ history.
Kinda like Herbert ‘I’m an engineer. I can make central planning work’ Hoover being blamed for causing the last Great Depression with his lassez faire capitalist ideology. (Hoover Dam, anyone?)
When they pass wage & price controls, then can we call him Nixon?
NPR is never beholden to conservative Presidents.
I’m glad he’s got his head right - he’s obviously been shown the error of his ways.
You don't have to, I personally like Nixon and always have. My only point was Nixon was not a conservative, and made the mistake of bipartisanship with Marxist Rats (most all of 'em), because of that.
You are correct to point out that defunding actually occurred just after Nixon's resignation. I intended to make the point that Nixon should have prevented defunding by not resigning and fighting the communists here as well as overseas.
You are accurate, my apologies.
What I know and what I remember:
Obama has a fettered, fawning press Nixon faced a free, fractious press.
No apology necessary. Nixon like all presidents had good points and bad. The left and the media made him into a total monster. He was no conservative for sure but we have had a lot worse. I’m still waiting to see any good points out of the current one. After all these years of the left demonizing Nixon I am loving the comparisons being made.
What a pansy, candy-ass lib.
“Reaction from the NPR audience was negative and within 24 hours, Rudin was in backtrack mode.
Within 24 hours? Wow! I’ll bet it was a spontaneous gathering of angry SEIU members outside his house?
Yes, he's quite the she-bitch.
My purpose also is not to defend Nixon -- my purpose is to condemn his enemies, many of whom were America's enemies.
The months of frenzied Watergate coverage by an obsessed, delighted press and the post-Watergate disarray in Washington allowed Nixon's and America's enemies "to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory for the South Vietnamese people"
Nixon's and America's enemies built upon their "glorious Watergate victory" to do maximum damage to our Republic including Senator Church's condemnation of our intelligence services.
It also aided the Marxist-Alinsky hippie street rabble to take over the formerly traditional, patriotic Democratic Party.
(That ain't name calling. The Sixties Marxist-Alinsky hippie street rabble really have taken over the traditional, patriotic Democratic Party. Under the hail of "neo-con" taunts many Democrats fled the Party.)
In a perfect scenario there would be no apology and the zer0 administration would take away all their funding. *sigh*
“It also aided the Marxist-Alinsky hippie street rabble to take over the formerly traditional, patriotic Democratic Party.”
I think that had already happened. I believe one of the congressional staffers working on watergate was one Hillary Rodam.
