NPR analyst compares Obama to Nixon, issues full apology
Washington Examiner ^ | 10/24/2009 | Byron York

Posted on 10/24/2009 10:00:02 AM PDT by JRochelle

It's pretty unremarkable to describe the Obama White House's growing enemies list -- the insurance companies, Chamber of Commerce, Fox News -- as "Nixonian." But there's one place where, if you venture such an opinion, you'd better be prepared to apologize -- quickly and profusely.

On National Public Radio's "Talk of the Nation" Wednesday, NPR political editor Ken Rudin said the White House campaign against Fox News is a bad idea. "It's not only aggressive, it's almost Nixonesque," Rudin said. "I mean, you think of what Nixon and Agnew did with their enemies list and their attacks on the media; certainly Vice President Agnew's constant denunciation of the media. Of course, then it was a conservative president denouncing a liberal media, and of course, a lot of good liberals said, 'Oh, that's ridiculous. That's an infringement on the freedom of press.' And now you see a lot of liberals almost kind of applauding what the White House is doing to Fox News, which I think is distressing."

It's not the usual thing you hear from NPR analysts. Reaction from the NPR audience was negative, and within 24 hours, Rudin was in backtrack mode. "I made a boneheaded mistake yesterday," Rudin wrote on his NPR blog. "Comparing the tactics of the Nixon administration -- which bugged and intimidated and harrassed journalists -- to that of the Obama administration was foolish, facile, ridiculous and, ultimately, embarrassing to me. I should have known better and, in fact, I do know better. I was around during the Nixon years. I am fully cognizant of what they did and attempted to do."

"I apologize for a dumb comparison."

The Stalinists forced him to recant. The "enemies list" and Nixon-style thuggery is good when Lefties practice it. Its all for the revolution and you can't make an omelet without bashing a few right-wing heads in.

Sounds like the NPR reporter is correct in his initial assessment since, obviously, he has now been forced to recant his opinion.

Well, unlike a lot of the so-called independent Media, NPR is beholden to the Feds. So when the Obama Administration barks, you can expect that the folks at NPR will cower and pee on the floor.

You got that right JR. Nixon had a few problems, but he was basically a very effective and decisive president and a workaholic. Plus, his staff was composed of intelligent adults, not the crib full of crybabies we currently have.

Was that the same Milhous that promoted and signed the Environmental Protection (of Marxist policy) Act?

Or was he the one who allowed the Peacenik US Congress to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory for the South Vietnamese people by allowing the defunding of the critical war material support for the South Vietnamese government? That "conservative?"

I rather like the reverse McCarthyism charge against this admin. Using the full power of the Federal government to blackball anyone who disagrees. In this case, conservative views and people are taking the hits and the offenders are the national socialists in power. Once again, there is no balance and no accountability...only bullying and intimidation.

Pendulum swing...much too far.

Obama, Moochers and Parasites, Leftist Media, brain-dead democrats (redundancy alert!), Goldman Sachs, America hating muslims.

On the Obama Enemies List:

Everyone else.

Vietnam War
Exit of the Americans: 1973–1975

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vietnam_war#Exit_of_the_Americans:_1973.E2.80.931975
“Gerald Ford took over as U.S. president on 9 August 1974 after President Nixon resigned due to the Watergate scandal. At this time, Congress cut financial aid to South Vietnam from $1 billion a year to $700 million. The U.S. midterm elections in 1974 brought in a new Congress dominated by Democrats who were even more determined to confront the president on the war. Congress immediately voted in restrictions on funding and military activities to be phased in through 1975 and to culminate in a total cutoff of funding in 1976.

I used to have a monthly payroll deduction to support my local public radio station. I made a special trip in to the payroll office and cancelled the contribution, and haven't donated a nickel since, on the day after the 1992 election. I almost drove off the road when I heard the NPR newsroom burst in raucus cheering when it was announced that Clinton had won. They haven't improved one bit since.

You don't have to, I personally like Nixon and always have. My only point was Nixon was not a conservative, and made the mistake of bipartisanship with Marxist Rats (most all of 'em), because of that.

You are correct to point out that defunding actually occurred just after Nixon's resignation. I intended to make the point that Nixon should have prevented defunding by not resigning and fighting the communists here as well as overseas.

You are accurate, my apologies.

No apology necessary. Nixon like all presidents had good points and bad. The left and the media made him into a total monster. He was no conservative for sure but we have had a lot worse. I’m still waiting to see any good points out of the current one. After all these years of the left demonizing Nixon I am loving the comparisons being made.

RE: "I’m not going to get into defending Nixon but you can’t blame him for everything."

My purpose also is not to defend Nixon -- my purpose is to condemn his enemies, many of whom were America's enemies.

The months of frenzied Watergate coverage by an obsessed, delighted press and the post-Watergate disarray in Washington allowed Nixon's and America's enemies "to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory for the South Vietnamese people"

Nixon's and America's enemies built upon their "glorious Watergate victory" to do maximum damage to our Republic including Senator Church's condemnation of our intelligence services.

It also aided the Marxist-Alinsky hippie street rabble to take over the formerly traditional, patriotic Democratic Party.

(That ain't name calling. The Sixties Marxist-Alinsky hippie street rabble really have taken over the traditional, patriotic Democratic Party. Under the hail of "neo-con" taunts many Democrats fled the Party.)
