National Guard drill at high school to prepare for possible H1N1 riot

PARIS — Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School will be the site of a National Guard riot control drill Thursday morning to prepare in the event of a panic over distribution of serum to treat the swine flu.

The school on Route 26 at the Paris-Norway town line has been designated by state officials as a distribution site for the H1N1 flu vaccine. The drill is to prepare for a worst-case scenario should the serum have to be transported from Augusta and people rush to get it.

On Thursday morning, four or five National Guard Humvees will travel from Augusta to Paris with vials of fake serum. The National Guardsmen will take on the roles of panicked citizens and military police and practice what they would do, such as using tear gas, in the case of a riot.

"This is just a component of moving the stuff from point A to B," said Oxford County Emergency Management Agency Director Scott Parker. The plan will be put into place only if needed, he said.

Plans were developed in April to have vials of serum sent from the federal government to Augusta, Parker said. From Augusta, the supplies will be transported to designated distribution centers.

During the April conference, concerns were raised about a possible out-of-control rush on the serum, Parker said. Because of that concern, Gov. John Baldacci and Gen. John Libby, adjutant general of the Maine National Guard, agreed that a plan should be devised to quell such a disturbance.

Local police chiefs have also been involved in the planning, Parker said. In a real event, local police would be in charge of security once the serum arrives in Paris. "We own it. We're in charge of providing security," he said.

As of Aug. 5, the Maine Center for Disease Control said there had been 323 confirmed cases of H1N1 in Maine, of which 176 are Maine residents and the rest out-of-staters diagnosed in Maine. A total of 19 people required hospitalization. Sixty percent of the victims were under the age of 25.

On Tuesday, health authorities reported Maine's first death from the H1N1 virus. Dr. Dora Anne Mills, director of the Maine Center for Disease Control, said a York County man in his 50s was hospitalized for three weeks and died last week of underlying conditions complicated by H1N1.

The drill will take place behind the school and will not affect the day-to-day activities within the school. Access to the school building will be available through the main entrance, Parker said.

Well with all the mass graves on you tube that are being dug in the Arizona at the Military Cemetery there and in Houston and I believe some in Pennsylvania plus all of this training for swine flu pandemics, it certainly is drawing a lot of attention to the swine flu and away from what else is going on in D.C. and global politics. I do not know if the numbers of people dying in the U.S. have reached alarming numbers or even the amount of people world wide who have died from the swine flu have reached alarming numbers. I have 3 doctors in my family who are pretty knowledgeable. I guess I will call them tomorrow and get the scoop.

This riot training is for a scenario where people are so desperate to be given the vaccine, that riots break out among people rushing to make sure they are among the first vaccinated.

It seems some people might riot to get the vaccine, and others might riot to avoid having to take it.

There may be a few people who will riot and demand to be immunized. I won't be among them and probably won't even take the damned vaccine if it's offered. And, with that in mind, my biggest worry would be in someone trying to force me to accept the vaccine.

Well, it's good to know that it's been 2 1/2 months since that drill and nobody's rioted in Maine yet.

A lot of military and police organizations hold a variety of scenario drills. One morning I got a robocall from my local police department telling me not to be alarmed by the sound of gun fire in my neighborhood. The local SWAT group was running a series of "hostage" drills. I'm glad they called, but there was no way to calm down the dogs on my street.

In any event, if the good people of Maine are anything like my fellow Hoosiers, they probably have better body armor and larger caliber weapons than the Guard, so yeah—it could be a mess, if the Obamites start throwing their weight around.

The 3rd Infantry Division’s 1st Brigade Combat Team has spent 35 of the last 60 months in Iraq patrolling in full battle rattle, helping restore essential services and escorting supply convoys.

Now they’re training for the same mission — with a twist — at home.

Yep. I was born/raised in Maine, then went off for quarter century living all over the country = been back home t’Maine another quarter century (great g’ma now) and I have NEVER seen any panic/riots to get flu shots.

In the article is a VERY good excuse to refuse to have your school children jabbed. First quote the above about the obama's kids and then this:

“The Centers for Disease Control recommend that children ages 6 months through 18 years of age receive a vaccination against the H1N1 flu virus. At this time only children with chronic medical conditions are receiving the vaccination because their immune system is not strong enough to fight off the strain.”

and if your school/town says THEY have enough, you could choose to tell them to send the extra to all the areas that are obviously short - or we wouldn't be in National Emergency" crackdown...or tell them to send your kids shots to the obamas.

For myself, I have successfully avoided all flues, pneumonia, etc for decades with my own preventive medicine...sniffing crushed garlic at the first nose twinge, gargling with raw cider vinegar in warm water, real chicken broth with onions/garlic/thyme/ginger etc - and "smudging" .

Nah. We'd just make it in our cellar - or get it from one of our neighbors or friends - Maine has become the mecca for micro breweries.

Remember back when Carter capped working oil wells in CA and TX etc - and declared a gas shortage?

And gas and heating oil skyrocketed? (They were trying to do to our economy then what they are now)

Mainers, hard hit with high fuel oil prices, Dusted off the old wood stoves, got the chimneys cleaned and went back to burning wood.

That made them mad so they tried to outlaw wood burning. That didn't work, so they tried to outlaw OLD wood stoves, knowing many Mainers would not be able to afford new ones.

Mainers made a big stink and they backed down.

As we 'speak', I'm burning a 35 year old stove made by Mainers - I was burning one much older.

I can no longer use it all winter as I'm an old great granny and once the snow and ice pile to the sky on my woodpile, I have to give up and go to the furnace...which I hate. Not only costly, but not a friendly heat.

But we Mainers don't take kindly to orders. Tell us we hafta do something and our answer is: "Oh yeah. Watch this!"

Well I agree with you, on all counts.

Here in Vermont we used a Sotz barrel stove for winter wood heat for 23 years. I broke down this year an bought a Jotul fromm the Maine warehouse.

Of course the Sotz corporation was driven out of business by the Dem anti-wood stove initiatives. When the barrel wore out, I just took it to local welders who cut off the fittings and we installed them on a new barrel, doing just as you described.

It will be ineteresting to see what will happen in states with this self help culture, with Obama fiats on health care, hate speech, internet censorship, and guncontrol,etc. all coming down the pike sooner or later.Pass the popcorn, and if we get short of beer, I know where to go.
