Steve Phillips Is Fired by ESPN After Affair
NY Times ^ | 10/25/2009 | RICHARD SANDOMIR

Posted on 10/26/2009 6:08:55 AM PDT by Phlap

ESPN fired Steve Phillips on Sunday, less than a week after a newspaper revealed that he had had an affair with a 22-year-old production assistant with the network.

“Steve Phillips is no longer working for ESPN,” the network said in a statement. “His ability to be an effective representative for ESPN has been significantly and irreparably damaged, and it became evident it was time to part ways.”

For David Letterman, it's a joke. Not so funny for Steve.

Production assistant. Kind of like an intern status? Hmm.

One of the reader comments on the ESPN story posted on another site was hilarious. It said something to this effect: "He threw away his career over a fat broad with arm flab and 3.5 chins?"

I had no idea who the guy was but the story says he is married and has a history of problems like this during his career.

He said he is going for “in patient” counseling. The only cure for this kind of activity is MORALS, which he obviously doesn’t have.

Obviously a double standard, but seriously I would like to know if there are any legal minded freepers out there that could tell me why selective enforcement is not a perfect defense plea? For instance, having sex with an underage person is DEATH for Roman Polanski, but there are tens of thousands of underage MOTHERS out there on wellfare etc. What about those dads? I know of a 21 year old GRANDMOTHER ! ! ! Where's the viper-like prosecution of those child-rapists?

Steve checks himself into a facility to deal with his problems? Might be a prelude to and ADA type lawsuit, especially since ESPN knew of his history.

It’s not a personal problem; it’s a character problem.

since the whacko-chick is also an ESPN employee, there is likely nothing else they could do to protect themselves from sexual harassment lawsuits.

It cracks me up that a job at ESPN is serious enough to fire a guy for having sex with an intern, but a job as President of the United States was not.

What a piece o' work. That goes for the sl*t, too.

Good riddance, I say. But, it's maybe only a matter of time before he shows up on MLB Network, a la Harold Reynolds.

Or, maybe not. Reynolds was a far better baseball analyst than Phillips.

When investigating charges of sexual harassment, one of the questions asked of the victim is: “What do you think an appropriate solution would be?” That is where the company gains insight into how to protect itself. I didn’t see any claims by the girl that it was harassment, but it’s not an uncommon defense to save one’s job and there is no “statue of limitations” on claiming so after the fact....

Why do men who have attractive partners, cheat on them with ugly broads? Secondly, for the male freepers: if your mate was say in the leagues of actresses: Maggie Q or Halle Berry, would you cheat on her with the likes of what Steve Phillips cheated on?

men are simple (a general statement, i know)... they at any given time want one of two things--a sandwich or sex... perhaps the attractive spouse is not giving either... (the sex or sandwich observation can be attributed to Dr. Laura... i agree with it for the most part)... you don't have to be attractive to make a sandwich, nor to enjoy sex... if you are an attractive gal who doesn't mind making the sandwich and who enjoys sex, well, then--you are lethal... add intelligent to that, and your man will slay dragons for you...

You do realize that Polanski drugged the girl, then forcibly sodomized her as she begged him to stop. That isn’t “having sex with an underage person,” it’s rape.

In his great book, "Going All the Way," Dan Wakefield explains it something like this:

Let's say you really love peach pie, and you eat peach pie every day. But that's all you get. Morning, noon and night, peach pie. Peach pie, day in, day out. Peach pie, peach pie. Wouldn't you want apple every once in awhile, even if you didn't like apple as much as peach?

While all this is in the realm of possibility, it is highly unlikely.
