Torching the Big Tent (NY Times on the GOP)
NY TImes ^ | 10/25/09 | Pinchy "loaf" Sulzberger

The feeble pulse of moderation in the Republican Party is in danger of flat-lining in the Nov. 3 Congressional election in upstate New York. Luminaries like Sarah Palin and Newt Gingrich have taken opposing sides over whether the party dare tolerate the official Republican candidate in the 23rd district — Dede Scozzafava, a six-term assemblywoman whose record includes refreshing tinges of centrism.

Ms. Scozzafava was nominated by local party leaders as eminently electable despite — or because of — her defense of women’s abortion rights and her tolerant views on same-sex marriage.

She is already shunned by many more ideologically narrow House Republicans, and deep-pocketed right-wing purists, pouring in hundreds of thousands of dollars, have driven up the poll numbers of Douglas Hoffman on the Conservative line. Barely noticed in the intramural scrum is the Democratic candidate, Bill Owens. He could profit most from the three-way split in the heavily Republican district, which was vacated by John McHugh, the G.O.P. moderate appointed secretary of the Army by President Obama.

Helping to elect the Democrat is not the aim of ambitious conservatives like Ms. Palin, last year’s vice presidential nominee, who is now intent on building a national constituency. She pronounced Scozzafava’s candidacy unacceptable because it “blurs the lines,” at least of Ms. Palin’s idea of party orthodoxy. Mr. Gingrich, the former House speaker, nostalgic for the G.O.P.’s “big tent” fantasy days, disagreed.

I am contacting the NRCC to ask why they are supporting Scozzafava in this race, and why they are ignoring David Harmer in California’s 10th district. Here are the numbers if anyone else wants to call:
from the NRCC "contact us" web page:

We aren’t torching the big tent. Just tossing tear gas inside and shooting any RINOs that run out.

Figures that the NYT would love Scuzzabama, who’s not even a moderate but a full-on liberal DIABLO.

her defense of women’s abortion rights and her tolerant views on same-sex marriage.

Can you imagine the NYT writing in support of a conservative along these lines: "her defense of a baby's right to life and her tolerant views on traditional marriage."

Someone had a great one liner on here yesterday. I wish I could remember who and give them credit. Maybe they will see this and claim it:
In a smaller tent, we stand closer together
What is important for conservatives is to hold to their principles and values. The GOP can win our votes if they support those principles and values. If they wander from that, they risk defeat. It is not us who are handing this seat to the Dems. It is the GOP who does this by nominating candidates who can not win.

I would like to see a Hoffman victory in NY23, but a resounding defeat for Scozzafava (which looks very likely) would still send the message. If Hoffman beats her by a good margin, it will be obvious that it was Scozzafava taking votes away from a candidate that could have won.

Newt and the NY Slimes are supporting the same candidate!

And Newt is thinking about running in 2012...

When the New York Times comes out for the NRCC’s candidate, you can be pretty sure there is something rotten at the NRCC.

Well if the NY Times is “concerned” you can pretty much bet it’s the right path for us. I won’t hold my breath but this should tell the party “elite” (aka dead wood) they’re headed in the wrong direction. Like Rush says, the left will always tell us who our candidate is by who they’re most afraid of.

newt keeps mistakenly preaching that this was a LOCAL election from the people, it was a unilaterally decision by a handful of party bosses - Newt, correct yourself.

Newt supports the BOSSES because he wants their support for President in 2012.

Newt doesn’t understand the grassroots is rebelling against this smoke filled room style of politics.

Newt - you look foolish here.

Once again, Pinch lies. Dede isn’t a conservative with moderate social views. Dede is a liberal with moderate economic views. She belongs in the Democratic Party.

Oh, please let it be so, nationwide.

The Slimes is desperately interested in the GOP, not.

The ringer GOP that backstabbs the conservatives that would prevail in these Congressional contests, that's what the NY Slime worry for.

But the good news is the record low for subscriptions and the record high for losses.

The Red newspaper remains in the red.

Pinch calls the murder of 50 million innocent Americans "centrism".

He is a leftist loon !

refreshing tinges of centrism.

I wonder if the NY Times would view a Dem candidate who was against cap and trade, against health care reform, and against abortion as demonstrating refreshing tinges of centrism. Scuzzy is only a centrist to those on the far left.

This kind of reminds me of all of the "advice" the left was lending the GOP after last year's elections - that they need to be more "centrist" in order to be "relevant". What a joke.

Well, you have to understand, the “center” for the New York Times is somewhere between Chairman Mao and Bill Clinton.
