Riordan endorses Whitman, Poizner hits back

Former Los Angeles Mayor and state Education Secretary Richard Riordan has endorsed Republican gubernatorial candidate Meg Whitman, adding to her collection of high-profile endorsements such as from former New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani and U.S. Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz.

In the Whitman news release sent out this morning, Riordan says, "Meg believes the future of our state and the strength of our nation depend on Californians rededicating ourselves to education. Her commitment to returning control of our schools back to parents and teachers and demanding accountability makes Meg the best candidate."

Whitman repeated the education theme in her quotes in the news release.

"I appreciate Richard Riordan's steadfast commitment to education reform,'' Whitman said. "Over the decades, he has worked relentlessly to ensure every California student has access to a quality education. I am honored to have Mayor Riordan's endorsement and he will be an asset to my team."

Whitman, the billionaire former CEO of the online auction firm eBay, has made fixing education one of the three priorities of her campaign, along with creating jobs and cutting state spending.

Whitman rival, state Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner, has won endorsements from other former officials such as former UC Regent Ward Connerly and former state Treasurer Matt Fong.

All of them are scum RINOS, especially Meg Whitman. The California republican party leadership is pretty much co-opted by the democrats. All moles, all the time.

Whitman is probably as far right as California can reasonably hope to get, a stark example of why the rest of the nation shouldn’t follow California’s lead to liberal mediocrity, where the leftist kooks are normal and a Whitman is the voice of reason.

Mr. Riordan would fit in perfectly.

He seemed to be the "let's be practical" / "go along to get along" kind of politician.

As for endorsing Whitman? Meh...

As has been mentioned here before, all the Republicans running for statewide office will the of the liberal sort.

At least Whitman (or more likely some staffer) realized that taking the "Reagan" approach of making the campaign about three issues might work to get her elected. Also, by focusing on the business, education, spending issues she can avoid those sticky social issues.

As far as social issues go, Whitman doesn't care and will be an amorphous moral blob just to get elected, but if she can make good on the three things she is promising....it might be worth putting up with her.

Why vote for a GoP liberal when you can vote for a Dem liberal?

Oh come on folks, Meg has been a Republican for all of ten minutes. I can’t believe how hard on her you all are. /s

I don’t know how old Whitman is, but she has clearly had decades to familiarize herself and become involved with the issues, and decided to take a pass up until now.

Screw that noise, and the herd of RINOs if rode in on.

She thinks she can pop off with a few sound policies, and everyone will forgive and forget.

LMAO< where does the Republican leadership find these circle jerks?

It’s time to pull a New York shutout on the California Republican leaders.

Yeah, I know, and you are right. When confronted with the choice between a Rep. pretending to be a Democrat and a real Democrat....they vote for the Democrat.

But I think Whitman is banking on the fact the the economy is so bad and so many are out of work that people will vote for the person that they think can fix it all.

Is Whitman a liberal? Hell yes. As as a CEO she was all about growing the company and profits.

Morality? Freedom? Good v Evil? Liberty? Principles?
Hey, as long as she met the letter of the law and kept her company out of court....who cares?

I usually vote party ticket.. so if she is the candidate..

but occasionally, and being as we now live in a ‘No Fault’ culture here in California especially,

I may explore options , albeit as limited as they appear..

Most people are cut out of the political system by virtue of the fact that they have lives, work, families, etc. and limited resources and therefore cannot participate.

Since we don't get to choose our candidates we have to choose between the lesser of two evils on election day.

I believe the low turnout for elections reflects the disgust most people feel for the choices laid before them.

Maybe we need a state initiative to place a BINDING "None of the Above" choice on statewide elected office which would trigger a new election.

Just great, the person who helped ruin eBay to now take over California. Just what you guys need.

Don’t believe eBay was screwed up? Ask any regular seller from a couple a years ago.

You’re probably pretty close to the truth with that. It seems she was praising him until recently when she began trashing him.

These political opportunists are such a crock.

Yes, she met and liked Van Jones — and sung his praises. She also failed to vote more than a time or two over the years.

Naturally Rino Riordan would endorse her — the others have as well — a pox on all that. Maybe she ran e-bay well for a time but I don’t want her for governor.

I thought she was the one. John and Ken from KFI640 had her on last week. She spouted a lot of pretty sounding stuff but we all know how that goes. What they say and what they do are worlds apart. And, of course, her love of Van Jones wasn’t brought up at all.

Oh she was pretty slick in the part of that interview I heard. No argument there. We have both had the same reaction.

Why was she supporting people in the past that don’t agree with any of what she was proposing last week? Why should I believe she would stick to what she believes now, if she didn’t stick to what she believed enough last year to support other people?

This lady is a political fraud IMO.

I agree. I won’t vote for her. She just registered with the Republican party a few months ago (not that that makes her a conservative). Where was she before that? Nowhere...except impressed with Van Jones.

Well, she was a campaign finance player on McCain’s team. That’s when my ears first perked up, because with that she was already mentioned as McCain’s and the R.P California leadership’s favorite to become our governor.

Her past donations weren’t to Conservatives either. This woman and the people she supported loathed Conservatives prior to this.

She’s just another shiny bobble to get us to take our eyes off the prize.

Poizner, unless I hear a good reason not to...

Either a new election or abolition of the office. If we abolish enough offices, maybe we can cut government down to a safer (for freedom and our wallets) size. A win-win! (If you abolish the office, say “Superintendent of Public Instruction, also gone are its subordinate and support positions, the whole entity that the “electee” would have controlled.)
