October 27, 2009 Climate Chief Lord Stern: Give Up Meat To Save The Planet
Methane is 23 times more powerful than carbon dioxide as a global warming gas Robin Pagnamenta, Energy Editor
People will need to consider turning vegetarian if the world is to conquer climate change, according to a leading authority on global warming.
In an interview with The Times, Lord Stern of Brentford said: Meat is a wasteful use of water and creates a lot of greenhouse gases. It puts enormous pressure on the worlds resources. A vegetarian diet is better.
Direct emissions of methane from cows and pigs is a significant source of greenhouse gases. Methane is 23 times more powerful than carbon dioxide as a global warming gas.
Lord Stern, the author of the influential 2006 Stern Review on the cost of tackling global warming, said that a successful deal at the Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen in December would lead to soaring costs for meat and other foods that generate large quantities of greenhouse gases.
He predicted that peoples attitudes would evolve until meat eating became unacceptable. I think its important that people think about what they are doing and that includes what they are eating, he said. I am 61 now and attitudes towards drinking and driving have changed radically since I was a student. People change their notion of what is responsible. They will increasingly ask about the carbon content of their food.
Lord Stern, a former chief economist of the World Bank and now I. G. Patel Professor of Economics at the London School of Economics, warned that British taxpayers would need to contribute about £3 billion a year by 2015 to help poor countries to cope with the inevitable impact of climate change.

You, sir, are a load of greenhouse gas.
Um, no. I predict one day in the not so distant future that people who believed this carbon and CO2 BS will be taunted and scorned for being complete fools.
Oh, and the earth used to be flat before we showed up.
GOD gave me 32 perfect teeth so I could chew meat and eat my veggies too. What GOD has joined together, let no gassy green mutant tear asunder.
This climate-change thing has now become a secularist religion
Hey! Lord British! Would you voluntarily die, to SHOW us your commitment to this planet?
I second that motion. He should use a hemp rope to accomplish this service.
Lord Stern needs to take a long walk off a short pier.
lots more pics at the site...
Prediction: Climate Chief Lord Stern will be Obama’s next choice for “Bean Czar”.
I guess you could say that famous vegan leader of Germany was a visionary who was interested in saving the planet before it was in fashion.
Lord Dimwit...how about giving up the meat between your ears? It’s obviously useless.
Go vegan to stop AGW ping.
Thanks but no thanks. I'd honestly stare at Helen Thomas for hours on end than see that photo. :D
I don’t know about the rest of you, but the day they ban steak because of cattle Co2 emissions is the day I grab my pitchfork for “Go Time”!
"FROM MY COLD DEAD HANDS!!!"
I’m with you, this cat is pissing into a storm....get out, we don’t want your successful treaty, we don’t need your treaty and the earth will do just fine as long as we pay attention and be reasonable
I like my steaks, Prime, cooked medium rare on my Big Green Egg.
