Gingrich calls GOP support for Hoffman a 'purge' By Jordan Fabian - 10/27/09 09:47 AM ET

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.) late Monday had some choice words for Republicans supporting Conservative Party party candidate Doug Hoffman (N.Y.), accusing them of conducting a "purge" of the GOP.

Many national Republican figures, such as Gov. Tim Pawlenty (R-Minn.) and ex-Gov. Sarah Palin (R-Alaska), have backed Hoffman over GOP candidate Dede Scozzafava in the 23rd district's special election this year. The district has been long-held by Republicans, but many conservatives have shied away from Scozzafava for her socially liberal positions and the local GOP's selection process that they say was not transparent.

Gingrich broke the mold and backed Scozzafava, saying her candidacy gave the Republicans the best shot of regaining a congressional majority. The former Speaker faced a push-back from the right after his announcement but he upped the ante on Monday.

"This idea that we're suddenly going to establish litmus tests and all across the country we're going to purge the party of anybody who doesn't agree with us 100 percent; that guarantees Obama's reelection, that guarantees Pelosi as Speaker-for-life," he told Fox News last night.

Gingrich called Scozzafava a "liberal Republican" for her support of gay marriage and abortion rights. But he defended those positions as in-step with her district and her predecessor, former Rep. John McHugh (R-N.Y.), who was tapped to be President Barack Obama's Army Secretary.

But he said that her endorsement from the National Rifle Association, her signing a no tax-increase pledge, and her opposition to cap-and-trade and healthcare reform legislation made her "adquately conservative in an upstate New York district."

Gingrich also attacked Hoffman for not having proper knowledge of local issues and living outside the 23rd district.

"So I say to many conservative friends who suddenly decided whether they're from Minnesota, or Alaska, or Texas, they know more than the upstate New York Republicans? I don't think so," he added.

Gingrich suffered much of the blame for the election loss. Facing another rebellion in the Republican caucus, he announced on November 6 that he would not only stand down as Speaker, but would leave the House as well. He had been handily reelected to an 11th term in that election, but declined to take his seat. Commenting on his departure, Gingrich said, "I'm willing to lead but I'm not willing to preside over people who are cannibals. My only fear would be that if I tried to stay, it would just overshadow whoever my successor is."

Wikipedia. Couch it in whatever terms you like, Newt. Being a leader in Washington was more important than representing your district. You quit on the people who had just voted for you days before.

Newt was a winner in the 1990`s. This is 2009. Newt’s trips off the conservative reservation won’t get the GOP out of their coma or help them get back on track.

Fred Thompson, Dick Armey and Sarah Palin endorsed the best candidate, Hoffman. Even Pawlenty knows better.

Wake up Newt!

Newt is part of the “old regime”. Any name that is half-way recognizable should be immediately purged.

But Newt is right that going the third party route is the way to screw yourself.

In general, yes. In at least 95% of elections featuring a RINO, the RINO is still the conservative vote because the Dem is well to his left.

That's not the case in this election. Scozzafava is to Bill Owens' left on a number of issues. Moreover, sitting on Planned Parenthood's board, receiving the Margaret Sanger award, getting the endorsement of the Daily Kos and being associated with ACORN should each by itself repel RNC dollars and public support the way garlic repels vampires, but Steele and (especially) Gingrich have doubled down instead.

He is always talking about his 6th(?) wife Callista. He brings her up all the time.

Third, actually...but that is enough of a problem, IMHO, compounded vastly by the fact that he cheated on wife #2 and the probability he cheated on wife #1.

To: Above My Pay Grade; Cedric

The thing is, Cedric, calling Dede a RINO is an insult to RINOs. If she had a conservative rating of 80% or even 70%, this wouldn’t be a story and Hoffman likely wouldn’t have run.

It's likely as been pointed out before, the New York Conservative Party is no fly-by-night organization. It has a history.

In 1970 William F. Buckley's brother James Buckley was elected to the U.S. Senate as a Conservative Party candidate.

William F. Buckley was the Conservative Party's candidate for mayor of New York City in 1965 -- but insisted upon a recount when he won. The recount showed that he actually lost -- just kidding. Buckley said that the first he'd do if elected is insist upon a recount. :)

Speaking of purging, we’ve allowed strong conservative leadership to be practically purged from the Republican Party. They’ve either gone the way of Newt, who had his golden opportunity long ago and went ‘weak kneed’, or they’ve been marginalized by elites who think of themselves as the rightful owners of the Republican brand.

Perhaps we’re going to find out now if there are enough Reagan Conservatives in this country to rescue it from the destructive path of political gamesmen, agenda driven leftists, and those who are willing to compromise away any principles they may have had, or appeared to have had, in order to “work with” those who are bent on our destruction. Why is it that we must always compromise with “them” for the sake of “unity”, but, they must never compromise with “us”?

We may succeed, by the grace of God, with prayer and principle and support for those who share our conservative values. But, if we do not succeed in electing genuine Conservatives, we will not have lost any more than we would have lost by electing someone as liberal as Ms. Scozzafava.

A leftist is a leftist regardless of the “R” or “D” behind the name, whether or not that name is Pelosi, and it is ridiculous for Newt, or anyone else, to claim rejecting Scozzafava, or anyone as liberal, is a litmus test regarding others who may be less conservative than we would like. The problem is that we have continued to accept Republican Party candidates as the representative percentages of our beliefs and values diminished to this point.

Our Founding Documents need more loyal defenders to join with the few we have in place. America deserves more than what she is getting from the majority of those in power today.

We no longer have the luxury of “going along to get along” with leftists. Our survival is at stake.

Are you a Conservative, or a Republican?

That’s a serious question, because if you’re a Conservative, and a liberal Republican gets the votes, then that means you lose, right? How could it possibly be construed as a win from a Conservative standpoint?

However, if you’re a Republican and not a Conservative, then I guess I could see your point...

I love it. Newt is making it impossible for him to make any real run at being President and I won’t have anymore arguments with Freepers who think he is a real conservative.
