Gingrich calls GOP support for Hoffman a 'purge' By Jordan Fabian - 10/27/09 09:47 AM ET
Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.) late Monday had some choice words for Republicans supporting Conservative Party party candidate Doug Hoffman (N.Y.), accusing them of conducting a "purge" of the GOP.
Many national Republican figures, such as Gov. Tim Pawlenty (R-Minn.) and ex-Gov. Sarah Palin (R-Alaska), have backed Hoffman over GOP candidate Dede Scozzafava in the 23rd district's special election this year. The district has been long-held by Republicans, but many conservatives have shied away from Scozzafava for her socially liberal positions and the local GOP's selection process that they say was not transparent.
Gingrich broke the mold and backed Scozzafava, saying her candidacy gave the Republicans the best shot of regaining a congressional majority. The former Speaker faced a push-back from the right after his announcement but he upped the ante on Monday.
"This idea that we're suddenly going to establish litmus tests and all across the country we're going to purge the party of anybody who doesn't agree with us 100 percent; that guarantees Obama's reelection, that guarantees Pelosi as Speaker-for-life," he told Fox News last night.
Gingrich called Scozzafava a "liberal Republican" for her support of gay marriage and abortion rights. But he defended those positions as in-step with her district and her predecessor, former Rep. John McHugh (R-N.Y.), who was tapped to be President Barack Obama's Army Secretary.
But he said that her endorsement from the National Rifle Association, her signing a no tax-increase pledge, and her opposition to cap-and-trade and healthcare reform legislation made her "adquately conservative in an upstate New York district."
Gingrich also attacked Hoffman for not having proper knowledge of local issues and living outside the 23rd district.
"So I say to many conservative friends who suddenly decided whether they're from Minnesota, or Alaska, or Texas, they know more than the upstate New York Republicans? I don't think so," he added.
geez, it’s really now all about his fatassed ego really...
what number jump the shark moment is this now for Snewt.
Newt is a LIBERAL....
Let’s be fully honest about it. Newt is now a Liberal.
He has went from Contract for America to Contract On America
In 1970 William F. Buckley's brother James Buckley was elected to the U.S. Senate as a Conservative Party candidate.
William F. Buckley was the Conservative Party's candidate for mayor of New York City in 1965 -- but insisted upon a recount when he won. The recount showed that he actually lost -- just kidding. Buckley said that the first he'd do if elected is insist upon a recount. :)
Newt, its time to waddle off the stage. Yo time is up!
Speaking of purging, we’ve allowed strong conservative leadership to be practically purged from the Republican Party. They’ve either gone the way of Newt, who had his golden opportunity long ago and went ‘weak kneed’, or they’ve been marginalized by elites who think of themselves as the rightful owners of the Republican brand.
Perhaps we’re going to find out now if there are enough Reagan Conservatives in this country to rescue it from the destructive path of political gamesmen, agenda driven leftists, and those who are willing to compromise away any principles they may have had, or appeared to have had, in order to “work with” those who are bent on our destruction. Why is it that we must always compromise with “them” for the sake of “unity”, but, they must never compromise with “us”?
We may succeed, by the grace of God, with prayer and principle and support for those who share our conservative values. But, if we do not succeed in electing genuine Conservatives, we will not have lost any more than we would have lost by electing someone as liberal as Ms. Scozzafava.
A leftist is a leftist regardless of the “R” or “D” behind the name, whether or not that name is Pelosi, and it is ridiculous for Newt, or anyone else, to claim rejecting Scozzafava, or anyone as liberal, is a litmus test regarding others who may be less conservative than we would like. The problem is that we have continued to accept Republican Party candidates as the representative percentages of our beliefs and values diminished to this point.
Our Founding Documents need more loyal defenders to join with the few we have in place. America deserves more than what she is getting from the majority of those in power today.
We no longer have the luxury of “going along to get along” with leftists. Our survival is at stake.
Are you a Conservative, or a Republican?
That’s a serious question, because if you’re a Conservative, and a liberal Republican gets the votes, then that means you lose, right? How could it possibly be construed as a win from a Conservative standpoint?
However, if you’re a Republican and not a Conservative, then I guess I could see your point...
I love it. Newt is making it impossible for him to make any real run at being President and I won’t have anymore arguments with Freepers who think he is a real conservative.
The phones are ringing off the hook at the Saranac Lake headquarters. We desperately need volunteers to help answer phones, process donations, and help with a myriad of other tasks. It is a great problem to have, but with this ground swell of support comes a lot coordination and effort. Please volunteer to ensure victory.

Why doesn't Gingrich come out for David Harmer in the CA-10, since John Garamendi also doesn't live in the district he's running for?
“Bathory used to bathe in blood of murdered young women, yes?”
Yes, it’s kept her young for 400 years.
She’s now the Speaker of the House, but has moved on to fetal stem cells.
Thank you for that info.
Obviously, if Queen Nancy ran with an ‘R’ beside her name, Newt would support her as the “new face of the Republican Party”....
Them’s smart girls!
Newty, please, STFU!
GOP purge bump for later.........
Newton is right actually. It IS a purge.
A purge of not of a moderate but of a liberal democrat who runs as a Republican (and Acornist Working Family’s marxist).
You are *** damn right I apply a “litmus test” to being a Republican Newt. A simple one, agree with conservative position on an issue ‘at least’ 51-60% of the time. You can’t even do that you’re in the wrong party, period. Dede Scuzzobama and Olympia Snowe aren’t welcome in my party anymore than a burglar is welcome in my home.
Newt is doing the MSM’s job for it on this race. His parroting exactly what NYTimes writers are saying and will continue to say. Feeding the beast and hurting the party in the guise of helping it.
And Newt? Partial Birth Abortion is not “in step” with I don’t think ANY district, a supermajority of Americans think it’s vile.
Newt: “So I say to many conservative friends who suddenly decided whether they’re from Minnesota, or Alaska, or Texas, they know more than the upstate New York Republicans ? I don’t think so,”
Upstate New York Republican voters DID NOT GET a choice Newt. Do I think I “know more” than the handful of county bosses that appointed Dede not to mention yourself? I don’t think I do, I know I do, and I find that depressing. You were the architect of the 94 revolution, you should not be so stupid. Now do everyone a favor and shut up and go away before you make it impossible for any conservative Republican to ever remember anything good about you.
Sorry Newt. You are entitled to your opinion, and I would hate to see the democrat win, but you’ve got to draw the line somewhere. I’m not going to vote for or support someone just because they claim to be a republican.
The problem here is Gingrich is attempting to adapt a rodent play, and it won’t work for us. First of all, he’s presuming a leftist fits this district. It’s not a leftist district. That’s the screw up #1. Secondly, let’s presume it is a leftist district and we win with an ultraleft RINO. There’s no guarantee that said RINO will even vote for a GOP Speaker (Gingrich has already forgotten he had to abdicate because there might’ve been enough RINOs in the 1999-2000 Congress that would’ve voted for another individual, putting at risk the Dems winning the Speakership by a plurality). And also the RINO won’t vote for most of our legislation. So, again, you’ve failed to accomplish anything other than electing a person opposed to (in Scozzafava’s case) 85% of the GOP agenda.
But how does it conversely work for the Dems ? Because said “Moderate/Conservative” Dems running in GOP districts are, in fact, lying about being Conservative. As soon as they win, they vote for Pelosi (no Dem has opposed Pelosi for Speaker yet — she even got Dems that refused to vote for Gephardt in prior Congresses, and Gephardt was more moderate), so that disqualifies them as Conservative. And then the bulk of them tend to support the liberal-left Dem agenda no less than 65-70% of the time (for the most moderate) and 90% for most of the rest (if not 100% in some cases - such as the rabid Stalinist Joe Sestak in PA who represents a Republican district).
So in conclusion, “Conservative Democrats” vote liberal and liberal RINOs vote, well, liberal. What do REAL Conservatives get out of this ? To quote Edwin Starr in his song “War”, ‘Absolutely Nothing, Huh !”
Newt.....the numbers say YOU are wrong.
He’s really gone around the bend, hasn’t he.
Newt never learns. Even after being tossed out of office by his RINO friends fueled by his own personal conduct he still won't learn. No wonder the 1995 GOP Congressional takeover was such a pathetic flop. It's not about your precious Party Newt it's about saving this nation and getting elected willing to get the job done. Your -R means nothing to me.
Yup, I remember Jim Buckley...hell of a good Senator.
Gene Taylor voted for Murtha in 2003 and 2005. Once they won the majority though he promptly fell in line and lurched left.
Parker Griffith claims he won’t vote for her again in 2011. Hopefully he won’t get the opportunity to vote at all.
Hey Rabs you apparently are the leader of a “crowd”. ;D
I advocate giving $$$ directly to candidates or PACs you like rather to than to the party.
And it’s too bad Newtless doesn’t run for something again. I mean, other than the Presidency (as he’s been doing for a while now).

It’s not a “purge”, Newt. We simply reject your RINO values. Go apologize to your ex wife or something.
Well I guess then you don’t need my money or my vote. And I don’t need no stinkin’ GOP.
Sorry, I should have said, "rabid pack of subversives."
Newt hasn’t been smart since the last century. The more he talks the more his idiocy surfaces...Never did like him and he just keeps verifying my early opinion of him...JMHO
Absolutely. The biggest beef for most conservatives is that ground rules are so easily bent or broken, and there is a steady drift leftward by Party leadership.
It wouldn't be a surprise at all to see an immediate effort to "moderate" Hoffman and to pull him to the "more civil center" as soon as he is elected. The problem is that the center keeps moving further to the uncivil left in Washington D.C..
I remember clearly. GWB went out and campaigned against Toomey for Spector in 2004. And it paid off because Spector was (even in the 1980s) and is a big spender. And look what Bush had planned for year 5 (2005) perfect for Spector, not for Toomey. Except about 2006 and 2007 the wild spending and debt party was starting to catch up with the economy, inflation , devaluation of the dollar and a very unhappy ending last year.
Rabid, no. But I am definitely a subversive...I work to subvert the globalist, collectivist, anti-American, anti-Constitution, RINO agenda of appeasement of and surrender to the Left.
Of course, we all know who you champion.
poor cedric...cant get over himself...
The republican party left me, I didn't leave the republican party.
No, keep talking, Newt. We need the vermin out in the open where we can see them.
Don’t forget Sessions and Boehner. Apparently they are not only pouring massive new money into DeDe’s campaign in these last days, but also have her campaign HQ fully staffed with their own National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) people, making calls, going door-to-door, etc.
Sessions and Boehner (and the rest of the NRCC executive committee) are even more culpable here than Gingrich and Steele—they’re the ones keeping Dede together behind the scenes.
I know Boehner’s one of these squishy “big tent at all costs” types, but what the heck is Sessions thinking?
Which Sessions are you thinking about? House or senate?
No wonder The Kenyan put McHugh in charge of the army, he's the perfect guy for fags in uniform.
The NY Post said Scozzafava is the hand-picked candidate of former state GOP chairman Joseph Mondello and we have Newt as a subversive as well. When this ends Newt and Mondello will not have changed and will still be silently working in background of the party machinery undermining conservatism. Scozzafava is a puppet to these people. They intentionally hide themselves (Mondello) and/or their backroom deals (Newt?). Until the majority of these DIABLOs are PURGED, conservatism will lose to their picking the candidates: McCain, Scozzafava et al. How it is to come about I don’t know but the party machinery has to have a massive purging of these background figures because they are operating with impunity and feel secure in their anonymity.
Oops, I got Jeff (Senator) and Pete (Rep.) confused. My bad...duh!
I’m no expert on McHugh, but a poster upthread from his district said it’s a lie to say he’s pro-gay marriage and pro-choice.
