It’s seems very likely that Scozz will lose, because of conservatives dissatisfied with the insular NY GOP’s decisionmaking. That’s a victory.

Will Hoffman win? If he does, that’s the epicenter of an earthquake, for sure. If the dem wins, talk of a conservative earthquake would be so overstated to the point of being inaccurate.

See what happens of election day.

For every tea party member that went to DC, I would bet there are 50 or more that wanted to go but just couldn’t swing it.

Can you hear us now?

New Gingrich doesn't get it. No one is expecting Republicans to agree on all the issues. I like Rudy Guiliani even though I don't agree with him on everything. But I absolutely detest Dede Scozzafava. She's never been a conservative and she's been on the wrong side of the issues 100%. Guiliani is a true moderate, Scozzafava is a Far Leftist. End of debate.

“Newt Gingrich doesn’t get it.”

Newt is very intelligent but he’s waaaaaay off base here. He’s not to be trusted. Don’t even bother running for POTUS in 2012, Newt. You dropped the ball with the endorsement of this woman who claims to be a Republican but is nothing more than a liberal Democrat. Your true colors are showing, Newt. You are done, Newt. DONE!!!! Go Doug Hoffman! Go Doug Go!!! We are pulling for you and we are praying for you!!!! I just hope the good people of NY-23 do the right thing and elect this good man.

I caught some of the interview on Greta last night with Gingrich.

Newtie purposely omitted Dede's support of card check, and Greta failed to call him on it.

Yes, there are pro-choice Pubbies, and pro-gay marriage Pubbies, but a pro-card check Pubbie is a Democrat.

Wow. Newt's been a Catholic for about ten minutes, and he's already violating a central Church tenet by actively campaigning for a screaming pro-abort who has actually received the Margaret Sanger Award.

There's no "social justice" that makes up for advocating the slaughter of innocent children.

Newt is Done. Any Republican who criticizes conservatives using the phrase "litmus test," is clearly a RHINO and not to be trusted.

I honor much of what Newt accomplished with the Contract with America, and his jousting with Clinton, etc. He clearly now is done.

Hey Newt "litmust test" coming out of a Republican's mouth is fighting words!

Not in the Northeast they don't. If we were to bring a supply of tar and feathers to each corrupt pol's home address and each corrupt political hack’s home (read IRS employee) then perhaps we could instill some fear in them for a change

I’ll believe it when I see what happens when they fill Fat Ted’s spot. MA is still a place where they use the smallest rule to beat you over the head with if you are not an insider. If you ARE an insider, their simply aren’t any rules, except quid pro quo.

Good post. It's worth noting that the dynamic of minor parties makes for some interesting scenarios in New York politics. Back in 1998, Republican incumbent Senator Al D'Amato deliberately snubbed the Right-to-Life Party during his race against Chuck Schumer. The RTL Party put up their own candidate instead of endorsing D'Amato as they had done in the past, and he ended up losing to Schumer by a margin smaller than the Right-to-Life Party candidate's vote total.

It’s likely Martha Coakley will win, but she’s just a boilerplate standard issue Democrat, indistinguishable from a Democrat for North Carolina or Arizona. She’s no Schumer or Clinton, just an ideological blank slate. She’ll do and say whatever it takes to win, but she believes in absolutely nothing. Which is about the best you can hope for in a Democrat.

"Why is this similar? Because in New York, more mainstream or conservative Republicans may be abandoning their party nominee. In Joe Lieberman’s case, mainstream Democrats abandoned the very liberal party nominee to elect the more moderate Democrat. I know Joe is liberal; I’m just saying Joe was not as liberal as Ned Lamont, and it was liberal activists who got Lamont the Democrat Senate nomination."

I look at this for a another lesson. The left wing of the Democratic Party may have lost the general election in that specific race, but they succeeded in capturing the Party. The Democratic Party was put on notice that the left was serious and would not be taken for granted. The result was the Dems moving even further left and eventually giving the left a considerable electoral victory. The Democratic Party takes the concerns of the left a LOT more seriously than the GOP takes the concerns of conservatives. Perhaps the the GOP needs to be sent a message that we are serious and will not be taken for granted.

If you ARE an insider, their simply aren’t any rules, except quid pro quo.

Just remember that MA is where the most powerful elected official is the president of the state senate and Billy Bulger had that position for life while his brother was the biggest drug dealer in the state.

Meanwhile

My 81 year old father was just escorted out of an apartment he was doing finish carpentry in because he didn't have a construction supervisor's license. He wasn't supervising anyone, doing structural or systems work, or paying off the bureaucratic tyrant. The whole job has been stopped and taped off pending the housing court ruling.

Back in 1998, Republican incumbent Senator Al D'Amato deliberately snubbed the Right-to-Life Party during

You remembered the wrong RINO. Correct year though.

D'Amato was clobbered, 55%-44% in 1998. He did snub the Right-to-Life line but it had no decisive effect. I recall conservatives abandoned him that spring after he endorsed civil unions, and that was the difference.

By 1998 the NYS GOP was taking its political advice from a pair of liberal consultants named Arthur Finklestein (sp?) and Kieran Mahoney who had attached themselves to the D'Amato-Pataki axis. It was this pair who advised New York Republicans to turn left, buy off the NYS Conservative Party leaders and their kin with jobs, and eschew the RTL line.

Dennis Vacco is the guy you must be thinking of. He was a one-term attorney general elected in the 1994 landslide with Pataki-McCaughrey. In 1998 he spurned the RTL endorsement and here's was what happened on Election Day:

2,084,948 - Eliot Spitzer (D)
2,059,762 - Dennis Vacco (R-C)

Vacco lost by 25,186 votes. The RTL candidate, an unknown named Robert W. Dapelo, never ran for state office before and never ran again.

Dapelo got 60,399 votes, more than double Spitzer's margin.

As for the Conservative Party: Louis J. Lefkowitz was the last NYS Republican to win a statewide office (attorney general, 1974) without the added votes from a Conservative endorsement.
