Karadzic Spoke of Ethnic Cleansing, Genocide Trial Hears
AFP / National Post ^ | Tuesday, October 27, 2009 | Mariette le Roux

The genocide trial of Radovan Karadzic went ahead without him Tuesday, with prosecutors branding him "supreme commander" of an ethnic cleansing campaign in the 1992-95 Bosnian war.

"This case is about that supreme commander, a man who harnessed the forces of nationalism, hatred and fear to implement his vision of an ethnically separated Bosnia: Radovan Karadzic," prosecutor Alan Tieger told the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia in The Hague.

Mr. Karadzic, who faces 11 charges of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity, had "ethnically cleansed vast portions of Bosnia and Hercegovina" during the war that claimed some 100,000 lives and forced 2.2 million people to flee their homes, said the prosecutor.

Mr. Karadzic, 64, is conducting his own defence. He denies all charges and risks life imprisonment.

After Mr. Karadzic failed to appear on Monday, the trial went ahead Tuesday with judge O-Gon Kwon saying that Karadzic "must accept that consequences will inevitably flow" from boycotting his hearing for the second day running.

After nearly five hours of prosecution evidence, which included footage of military attacks on civilians and emaciated detention camp inmates, the judge adjourned the trial to next Monday, as scheduled, and ordered an extra hearing for the following day, Tuesday, on how to deal with Mr. Karadzic's defiant absence....

Mr. Karadzic is charged with participation in a plan to "permanently remove" Muslims and Croats from Serb-claimed Bosnian territory.

"His forces killed thousands of Bosnian Muslims and Croats, imprisoned thousands more in squalid and brutal camps and detention facilities, and forced hundreds of thousands away from their homes," said Tieger.

He said that Mr. Karadzic lay foundations for the conflict with rhetoric to the effect that "Serb living space" was under threat from "historical enemies".....

The trial is finally underway, despite the feeble attempts by this butcher to derail it.

It will be a real pleasure to see this mass-murderer face justice.

About the same time that the trials of those who killed Nazis begin?

There is a little more to the Yugoslavian wars than the msm spin. You do realize that the Serbs were fighting al-queda and that ethnic cleansing and murder of civilians was done by all sides.

No, he does not realize that. However, he probably means well and is not entirely informed on the issue. The Serbs did respond in a VERY horrible way to horrible acts against their people. The Serb’s actions have been dissected and scrutinized for years and the local Muslims and Croat actions have been ignored or whitewashed during the same period. The three parties were equally guilty of very egregious acts against humanity. The reason for the exposure of the Serb’s actions and the whitewashing of their adversary’s actions are open for debate.

I'll give him the benefit of the doubt.

clinton's wag the dog war and his support of islamists, al-queda was unconscionable and happened in the early days of al gore's internet. Probably wouldn't fly today.

Bottom line is that Serbs have loved America since they saved our pilots in WWII when the muslims and Croats were hunting them for the nazis and the US gubmint screwed 'em.

Bottom line is, as in Vietnam and the present conflicts, the winds blowing from America are fickle, use em' to your advantage and do what you can while they blow in your favor. They can change at a moment's notice and the results can be devastating.

You said: “Bottom line is that Serbs have loved America since they saved our pilots in WWII when the muslims and Croats were hunting them for the nazis and the US gubmint screwed ‘em.”

In the previous comment I said: “The reason for the exposure of the Serb’s actions and the whitewashing of their adversary’s actions are open for debate.”

Conclusion: We’re on the same page, and educated to the historical realities at play.

murder of civilians was done by all sides

You mean like in WWII? And how all sides were equally blamed in that conflict?

/sarc

No, we blamed those who started the war, didn't we? Well, same here - it was Milosevic and the Serbs who got together and decided that they would like to create a Greater Serbia out of the disintegrating Yugoslavia. They were only able to do so because Serbs just happened to be in all the major positions in the Yugoslav military, and thus they easily got control of that country's war machine.

And what did they do with all that military power? Killing and destroying. The only war in Europe since WWII.

THAT'S why we're here today.

Those are the facts, ignore them if you want, history isn't.

The only war in Europe since WWII.

WRONG. The Greek Civil War took place from 46-49.

I'd suggest you do a little more research as you appear to be misinformed. Kosovo is inextricably entwined with what happened. Major part of this was muslim infiltration of Yugo.

Lots of info here on FR and other sources. I once believed the party line too.

Ok, I was talking about wars between two separate governments, not an internal war.

So it WAS the only non-internal war in Europe since WWII, right?

Well you could still look at it as a Civil War, since it was the breakup on one country.

Croatia was already an independent country by then.

Wrong again.

Hmmm...this is a rather odd post coming from you, CC.

That is, I remember some time ago where you specifically stated that you would no longer consider Balkan issues (right?).

Correct me if I'm wrong...but I don't think I'm wrong.

Didn’t realize you were keeping a file on me. Are you really that insecure?

I believe I said “for a while”.

“THAT’S why we’re here today.

History will give you the reason that the Serbs wanted to separate. I do not blame them for their desire to part company with the Croats who sold them down the river 70 yeas ago, or with the muslims who were already gestating the Euro-jihadis of today. I do think that the Serb’s methods were typically European and therefore unacceptable.

As i said in my previous post, murderous acts were committed by all sides in the former Yugoslavia. Why did the world media play up the acts by the Serbs and play down the acts by the Croats and Muslims? Why did most governments take the same stance?
