Anxious Crowds Meet Ad Hoc Swine Flu Police
NY Times ^ | 10/27/2009 | Jennifer Steinhauer

Posted on 10/27/2009 8:52:38 PM PDT by Saije

The top public health official in Los Angeles County stood at a swine flu vaccination site in Compton, Calif., on Tuesday and gently told elderly residents that they really ought to go home.

“I explained to people 65 or older, ‘The reason we are doing this is for children,’ ” said the official, Jonathan E. Fielding, the director of the county’s Department of Public Health. “I told them: ‘They are at very high risk for this flu, and you’re at low risk. I am sure you wouldn’t want to get a shot that left a kid who is at risk in harm’s way.’ ”

People have lined up in Southern California and across the country in recent days in the hope of getting a prick in the arm, but a dearth of the H1N1 vaccine has created an unexpected dynamic: local government officials, hospital workers and doctors in private practice are being conscripted as ad hoc swine flu police.

The goal is to make sure that those Americans with the highest risk for contracting the virus — and experiencing the more dangerous complications that can ensue — get injected first. But the somewhat willy-nilly nature of the vaccine’s distribution in some areas, publicity surrounding President Obama’s declaration of a national emergency and the rather large population legitimately considered high risk have brought hundreds of thousands of people to vaccine distribution points.

Some people beg. Some reduce themselves to lying about a pregnancy, or an underlying medical condition, that would move them ahead of the pack. In any case, officials say it is virtually impossible to verify most of the claims.

"somewhat willy-nilly nature of the vaccine's distribution in some areas..."

A typical NY Times way of saying that the federal government has no clue how to handle this competently.

These guys are so incompetent at messaging. The Complete Lifecycles Program does not include the elderly.

They have lived their life and it is time to move on.

It is for the children.

Suckers. I have talked to 4 doctors and they said do not go near the H1N1 “vaccine.” Suckers like NFL fans.

On Beck's show the other day he talked about a letter someone wrote to Time.

In it the snot nosed twit wrote "Step aside Grandma,we want our healthcare and we want it now"

The elderly should be very afraid.

I just got over the Pig Flu yesterday......

Fairly mild symptoms for 5 days.....still have the cough but it’s abating....

Oh the horror, it made me cut down to only one cigar a day......(only for two days, but it was a tough two days!)

Now I’m immune!

My opinion, don’t get the shot unless you’re at very high risk......

Yes. “The elderly,” most of my fellow Baby Boomers, should be terrified, because that’s part of their nature. Yet so many of them want to find out how life in the USA would be, if it were like the third world countries.

We need that big default, so they can see what those off-limits areas outside their resorts are like...firsthand.

The ‘elderly’, came through the Great Depression. They know what it’s like. They were children, they watched their parents drive vehicles with no tires because there was no tires to be had. Food was rationed. One egg a week. and it goes down hill from there. They told their children of it. But we are now into the grandchildren and great grandchildren and great great grandchildren, and they have no clue. None. Life has always been comfy for them. Most never doing without much. Oh sure, maybe they didn’t have the luxury jeans, but they didn’t do without clothes and shoes etc!
Gasoline was rationed, for those who had a car, and it would run, with or without tires.

Not according to the "snews."

The "reason" - they are not "available" in their "area" as well as they're not in the "high risk" category (read - go to private schools, get 3 meals a day, have access to everything else - and biggest - the H1N1 vaccine hasn't been "proven as safe.")

What we're in is "human test guinea pigs," not acceptable for Obama's children!

Considering the elderly (sans "underlying medical conditions") are generally less at risk from the H1N1 flu than young people (an unusual profile, and similar to the 1918 Influenze--which prompted panic ridden images of the pandemic), this is the correct decision.

Poor communication and the insistent recitation of the normal seasonal flu risk profiles by the media has led to the confusion.

It amazes me that the young folk somehow don't acknowledge that - barring an early demise - they, too, will one day be 'elderly."

Twits.

"The ‘elderly’, came through the Great Depression. They know what it’s like."

I'm really more than fed-up with that canard repeated by two generations of NIMBY, HOA hag, corporate-government employee/retiree, selfish socialists, who call themselves conservatives. A man or woman would have to be 93 years old to have been 18 years of age during the last year of the Great Depression!

No Baby Boomer lived at all during the Great Depression. Most of those who came at least ten years before the oldest of Baby Boomers are gone.

I'm a Baby Boomer. Our elders, who have passed away, were right! We are spoiled rotten! Most of the teens now are not, as most of them are far poorer than we have been and no more libertine.

This is practice for when officials and docs have to tell old people they aren’t going to get any health care and are turned away to die. Same story: you don’t want our limited health care dollars being denied to the children do you?

Liberals love this. The ultimate power! Scare people to death of a “deadly flu” and then deny them a vaccine when they show up for it. That is the ultimate bossiness - authority. Sitting in power of life and death - every liberals’ wet dream.

Anyone who is scared into getting the vaccine and shows up to get in line only to be told by some fascist pig to get out of line, should raise cain that they don’t have enough -they are too stupid and incompetent - to even get enough vaccine for those who want it. It’s not Bush’s fault! This is Obama’s Katrina. Europe managed to do it. Canada managed to do it. Third world sick freaks running our government manage to screw it up - plus give away 10% of our shortage in vaccine to the UN!

My seven year old girl (diagnosed H1N1) seems to have given me an ad hoc vaccination, so the shot is moot. She is getting better and I am starting to run a slight fever and sore throat. NAC, Elderberry, and D3 to the rescue.

I have had the flu for the last week, was able to do a couple of hours work yesterday and today, mostly its the chest congestion and welding really aggravated it so thats why I’m still basically staying at home for now.

52, no shots, lots of vitamin D at least 4000 units, garlic and Vitamin C, drinking pink grapefruit juice.

My 15 year old son had it and had high fever, only lasted a couple of days, seems that the older you are the less it affects you though it may affect you a bit longer.

What better way to cut Medicare/Medicade costs?

Just let the elderly with underlying ailments get the H1N1 and die....

The Obama administration is totally inept at everything other than travel and security plans for the POTUS and his family, so he can continue to “campaign” for socialism.

I saw that on the news this morning. The bureaucrats did not handle it well, at all.

I could have explained it better but the way they came off it was like “Surely you wouldn’t want a child to suffer or die, would you? You are not that cold and heartless, are you?”

Fact of the matter is people look out for themselves and many times rightfully so.

My allergist told me that anyone over 50 has already had swine flu 2-3 times.

Not exactly this particular variety, but swine flu nevertheless, and that I should not worry about getting it.

“Not just a dream anymore.”

They hope for that change of control over the lives and deaths of all Americans based on their control of health care and doctors. However, they are going to meet a wall because we are not going to put up with that elitist oppression. They will be dead if they try to kill people on a systematic basis. There are more they want to kill than there of of them who enjoy killing.
