The public option will not compete with the insurers. It will undercut them until they fold. Then the public option will become more and more expensive, through higher taxes, and there will be no insurance companies to give us a choice. Meanwhile, I don't really think the 2.2% profit margin in the healthcare insurance industry is obscene. How are the voters supposed to get informed when the major media outlets LIE??
We already have a real life example of the the public option in practice. Consider primary and secondary education. We have public schools competing with private schools. It is irrefutable that the private schools provide a superior education at a lower cost per student. In many cases, dramatically. Yet more students are in public schools than private. The cost continue to spiral upward. The government continually grabs more and more control. The public schools have a forced curriculum that large segments of the public oppose.
The government owns and controls the public schools and also have the power to make the rules. So they make rules that make it more difficult and costly for the private schools to compete.
Look at education and you can see the future of health care with a public (government)option.

I hadn't thought about it before but I recently read that the school system was Federalized under Jimmy Carter. I had always wondered why my youth education seemed to have less indoctrination than my son's schooling. Yes, the Federal Government ruins anything it puts it's hands on. They are going to eliminate the best Healthcare System in the world. We cannot stop them without the support of Democrats who have a conscience. Let's hope there are enough of those.
