There are a handful of symbols that are associated with the United States of America: The White House, the Washington Monument, the Golden Gate Bridge, that new football stadium in Dallas. But perhaps the most enduring icon that sums up this country both practically and ideally is the Statue of Liberty. It's a little ironic, then, that it came from France. It was a gift from that country to celebrate the centennial of the signing of the Declaration of Independence and to symbolize the friendship between the two nations that was established during the American Revolution.

Although those ideas are under attack today, this symbol of liberty still reminds us that it has stood for 123 years in the New York harbor as a beacon of opportunity for oppressed people from all over the world.
Those who, today, attempt to diminish what has been this place of refuge for those who sought freedom, never point out that people have not fled America to find liberty and opportunity elsewhere.

In a day when an unprecedented power grab is being undertaken at the highest levels of government in America, every citizen who values liberty should review the history and words that accompany the Statue's symbolism. This birthday could be a new symbol for those who are dedicated to halting this attack on their liberty as individuals and as a nation.
Teddy Roosevelt’s father, Theodore Roosevelt Sr., was instrumental in bringing the Statue of Liberty to America although I don’t have the details. It was mentioned in a bio of TR I have been reading.
